What palm rolling does do is compress the outside (temporary improved neatness) but it also helps the hair inside knot together tighter. It does help the cylindrical nature of your dreads too. I totally hear you on the Crazy Palm Rolling Psychopaths. They exist. They hang around in bus stops and abandoned houses, palm rolling each other's hair. It's a dark God-forsaken world.

I have 'newborn' dreads. They are 15 days old. I had pretty long hair before doing them, so, I have longer dreads now. I know I shouldn't do that, but I'm just too excited to wait (I have been waiting for so long to get them), so what I do is - I love to put them in tail or to make other super nice hairstyles (that you can find all around RU-vid), and, obviously, cause they are so young, they get flatten easily, so I palm roll. Every night before going to bed, and sometimes, after I come home, while unmaking my hair style before letting them hang freely. I find it VERY useful, in that case, cause that makes them feel more stiff, and it helps then 'get round' again. I didn't use any product (like gel or wax) in the process of making them, just the twist and rip method. I also wanted to add a big THANK YOU for your chanel, it has helped me a lot to make the right decision about my locks (which method to use, to make thin or thick locks, what should I do, what not to do...). We all learned a lot. Thanks again.
When I get down about my dreads I come to your videos and always feel better and slightly more patient. I'm at like 5 months since I did twist and rip and they are tightening up a lot but I have a ton of loops and bumps and a nest on top of my head lol.
i have helped some friends palm roll, and i have found that sea salt spraying, drying, then palm rolling with wool mittens has helped them lock tighter

My 5 year old partial crocheted locs never experienced palm rolling on my own because I’m too lazy to do it haha. Except of course when I have them retouched every 3 to 5 months or when I feel the need to. I’m glad that you made this video because then I don’t have to force myself into palm rolling everyday with wax as advised by my loc artist. I don’t like the idea of applying wax either because I don’t want product build up within my locs. In the 5 years of having my locs, I didn’t really see the need to palm roll because my locs are doing fine on their own. Except for some time the immature part (from the root until half way of my locs) becomes flat which I’m not fond of, I just go have it crocheted again which helps retain the shape and helps encourage new hair growth to loc naturally.
I roll my dreads at the roots but it's a different motion and I find it helps lock the new growth in my roots. I take a dread and fuzz up the root area then twist as im kinda of pushing the loose hair up to my scalp. I do this a few times and then place my dread between my middle fingers in each hand against my scalp and roll in one motion down the dread while having them out of sync to lock the hairs in. It works really well and I learned the technique, with my own few special things I've tried while learning, on RU-vid channel Twisted and Stoned. Both of you guys are very informative and have helped me alot along my journey!
Great video... i've still got baby dreads (5 months of a partial set) and I have found palm rolling works best to dry my dreadies out of the shower. I've also had comments that I haven't had near the lumps and bumps, and that may be why
thank you. this video was very helpful. so far I only have one and a half dreads but I have been palm rolling them like crazy and I felt as though it wasn't helping at all or that it may have been just making it worse and when I watched your video I relised it wasn't really helping so back combed them and twist and ripped them again and they are much tighter now so I am not afraid of them falling out while I wash them. thank you again
I had this one bit of loose hair that had bundled up into a clumpy knotty mess and I palm rolled it when it was damp once and it's been a cylindrical 3" dreadlock ever since. Tah daaaah!
"If you are a crazy palm rolling psychopath" I laughed so hard XD I believe that palm rolling does very little if absolutely nothing for my dreads, but if I'm feeling rather stressed out I'll go ahead and do so just because it's nice to fiddle with something to distract myself. so i have dreads that are 2 weeks old now have washed one time... my ends have locked up but middle to root is not locking as well... all i have done is palm rolled them.. not used any waxes or anything.. any info i should kno? - Juggalette309
Hello again Chris.....I did figure out how to get my lost videos in motion.....(and I'm proud to say I officially have 10 dreads started)......however, about the frizzies. Do the frizzies on the newly born dread come into the locks by them selves? Do they work their way in or do they stay frizzy? I'm meaning to buy a .6mm crochette needle to tighten my locks up and try to do away with the frizzies. It that recommend? Does it do any good with the twist and rip or shall I just "set them and forget them" (aside from small attention I give them every cpl of days).....(mine are actually taking quite well since the two weeks I initially started).
I think they've perfected the personalised ad algorithm. Clearly if there's something that should be marketed towards me, it's got to be hair implants.
I have a question.. after you go through the shrinkage phase and get to the magical land of mature dreads and begin to actually get some growth/length.. what is the average growth for dreads per month. Is it close to the normal hair growth of about 1/4 inch a month.. or less.. or more? I doubt more. Lol!
I found a way that does help. Put the dread between your pointer and middle finger of both hands and rub on opposite directions from root to tip...at least it seemed to help
I have young dreads. I have a TON of loose hairs on my dreads and they are long loose hairs. Will the hairs eventually lock into the dread or will I have to redo my dreads? What do I do?
My dreads are about 6 weeks old. I have rubber bands on the tips as my hair is very long and was really healthy and smooth. I went with the backcomb rip and twist. What do you think. Love you
I have had half head dreads 10th Dec and going through that difficult stage ,people are asking what am I using to lock them in ...I'm not using anything ,should I ? Palm rolling I have been sitting doing that ,I think that has made them lose or is it hair growth ,I do like them and I took on board what u say ...be patient everyone goes through that period .....it's awful .
Hi, I have 5mth 2 strand twists, (black hair) with med. density and fine strands, the person that did the tst put them in small sections, I interlocked 3x and ready to semi-ff or just separate because I feel they're too skinny to retwist and I don't trust the interlocking also because of the size, they're like microlocks, so freeforming seems like the best bet for me, and in a few mths,if I can stand it I will combine when there is some afro underneath, should I twist the roots or just separate and continue washing 1-2× a week? Also the more I wash the curlier the ends get, the back is knotting quite nicely but I really think I need to combine as they grow to make thicker locs so no breakage. let me know your thoughts. thanks!
My dreads are too short to palmroll them, but I really enjoyed your video and think it might be helpful when my babyworms reach a length where I might think of palmrolling them. I really think your videos are very helpful.. I've had my dreadlocks for about 5 days or so&I have so many loose hairs at the root because I have straight hair.. Like half of my drradlock is not knotted.. So I don't know what to do&you have no videos of loose hair besides little loose ones on the bottom of your head but no loose root hairs.. I hope you make a video on how to maintain very straight thin hair.. Thank you.
Yes. Thats how it works. You need loose hair at the roots so they don't cause baldness(Hair pulled tight can cause bald spots), as well as helping them not break off.
Hey dude, my lockist has just crocheted my 4 month old locks and told me to palm roll after salt spray whist still damp to help form the lock? I am to embark on this part of my journey tomorrow, my hair is dry and 'celtic' .. any comment appreciated!! They are formed at the root/top already
I'm going to go to a salon to get mine done because my hair is ridiculously thick and fairly long and I've never been good with my hair. It's a salon that specializes only in dreadlocks and the price is very cheap. The lady there said though, that with my hair (which pretty much becomes automatic locs whenever I wash it) there was no backcombing needed and that she would be creating the dreads by palm rolling the hair...this confused me. Perhaps she'll be doing twists and then palm rolling it but she seemed to strongly believe my hair would need no other helping along. I'm going to go with it because I liked the price, the place and the stylist and the work they've done, but I am really nervous that I'll get some sort of messed up dreads now. I am not white but it did make me feel better to know that they do normally backcomb non-black hair and softer hairs, mine is just very dry, thick and prone to matting already. If I didn't want them to be very neat, I'm pretty sure I could do them myself.
Xelestial If you let the hair freeform over a long period of time and palm roll the the clumps of knotted hair as they come together, that can potentially help... but I've never heard of someone going to a salon just to have their hair palm rolled with nothing else done to it.
Lazy Dreads I had it done. It seems they section out the hair and palm roll many tiny pieces of hair until they become twists. Non-ethnic hair would be backcombed first, apparently. Then the twists stay in through their own tension and gradually become more matted over time. They need to be re-twisted every so often depending on hair type (like every 2-4 weeks). I was told my hair would lock extremely fast though, so I probably only need go have it retwisted twice before I have locs. I'm not supposed to touch it otherwise. Anyway, just another method of doing it I guess, similar to leaving braided hair or any other form of twisting and letting them eventually get matted and knotted. I think for fine, soft and straight hair types, this would definitely be one of the slowest, most difficult ways to go but it seems viable for thick, coarse textured hair (which is not necessarily all ethnic hair because there's even different textures within the same ethnicities). Just another method, I guess! It doesn't seem to use wax though, so that's an upside. It was also very fast, like 3 hours on my very thick, 10-14 inch long hair. My concern for others with finer hair would be expense of maintenance, but if they could do it themselves, then why not I suppose.
Hey LazyDreads, I have a question that really bothers me. I plan to get dreads when my hair is long enough and my sister and many of her friends have/will have dreads too. Now, my sister told me stuff about how many of her friends, when traveling, got quite some stuff into their hair, like lice, which can obviously be quite a problem and she told me you would have to even cut them off since you otherwise wouldn't be able to get them out. And she told me about how some of her friends cut their dreads, after it is pretty long, shorter and to boil it out (I am not sure if I used the right word for that) since there can seemingly be quite a lot that can catch itself in it and get them on again. She also calls dreads 'a nest for these kinds of things'. What I would like to know, since I would be kinda terrified of that, is if dreads really can get so much stuff in them? I know that lice would be a thing and problem. And I also remember that when my sister's ex cut of his dreads there was lots of dust in them. I don't know if he maybe didn't clean them enough or if it is because he closed them at the tips (my sister told me I should leave them open at the tips to prevent leaving that kind of stuff in my hair.) But yeah, I still want to rather ask you, since you know so much about it. Did you have any kinds of experiences like that or heard of stuff like that? Is there a way to avoid them? I would be really happy for an answer!
Buttony M. Lice can be difficult to remove, but they can be removed without cutting off the dreadlocks. Typical lice treatments for non-dreadlocked hair involve some means of killing the lice - usually in the form of a medicated conditioner/cream etc followed by a fine tooth comb being used to remove the eggs. In the case of dreadlocks obviously the fine tooth comb cannot be used, instead the first part - medicated conditioner - or often a rubbing alcohol is simply repeated in order to remove the problem. Lice however are not really of particular worry - they cannot jump... or fly - they literally have to be transferred onto your hair and are no more likely to be found in dreadlocked hair than non-dreadlocked hair - so if you never get lice before dreadlocks... you're not more likely to get them afterwards. Dreadlocks can collect soap residue (which can collect lint/dust) if they are not washed properly with an appropriate shampoo. Regular deep cleaning of the dreadlocks helps remove any accumulated soap residue and properly washed dreadlocks will simply be hair and nothing else.
Heyy I started dreading my hair about three days ago and just like thirty minuets ago decided to look upp how lol but I actually created pretty tight dreads by just palm rolling really hard and crazy for a long time and back combing and twisthig a little bit the obly problem is that it is not all the way to the scalp it is about three inches from the scalp and I only have about ten so far, what do You recommend I do, should I just start back combing the rest of them?
Tyler Wankie Roots will come loose while they're young - so even if you knot them right up to the root... they'll come loose.... but if they start off already 3 inches loose... by the time you come to wash them you may find that there is a very large unlocked section at the root.

Well... that is not how you palm roll. Palm rolling is when you take a loc and palm twist it between your two palms in ONE direction until the whole loc is twisted tight. Then you would fasten with clips . Idk what it was tha the you were doing lls. Your locs would probably be different sizes or break off at its worst. I prefer wax because it holds longer than gels. Js.
jess Jaie I'm not going to say what you should or should not do to your own hair, but at least in the case of Caucasian hair - that is how Caucasian hair is palm rolled - you do not twist Caucasian hair and you do not use clips on Caucasian hair. Twisting hair at the roots carries the risk of thinning the root hair over time and can lead to larger bare spots between the dreadlocks. I'm not entirely sure where waxes/gels come into it, but I do not myself recommend the use of either because they risk clogging up inside the dreadlocks and not washing back out effectively.

jess Jaie Lemon juice is used by some for making the hair more dry and coarse and therefore more likely to knot up. Sea salt is an alternative which I would use instead. Elastic bands are useful for organising the hair when originally starting dreadlocks, but after that they should be removed. Elastic bands restrict movement of hairs and so if left in will have a negative effect on the surrounding hair. They can also rub on hairs causing damage and breakage. Loose hairs may also lock over the top of the bands requiring them to then be cut out. The above website is not one that I recommend to people because it is heavily bias towards product heavy methods and encourages the use of products that I would never put anywhere near my my hair - it has been implied that the website is run by the same people that sell the products that it promotes.
To clarify my previous question; if "palm rolling is not ideal for caucasian hair" then what is the recommended method of tightening loose hair when your month old dreads are loose in the middle of a dreadlock?
