This video is helpful for me, since I have had dandruff issues frequently since puberty(which is to say around 12-13 years now). I only wash my babylocks with lukewarm water(obviously residue free shampoo as well, but talking about temperatures), and rinse with water as cold as I can bear to promote blood circulation in my scalp. One thing I've found that soothes my scalp is the freshly squeezed aqueous goo inside Aloe vera plants' leaves. Just rubbing in it into my scalp and leaving it there for 15-30 minutes before I take a shower and massage & rinse it out along with shampoo. Not convenient for everyone of course, but I have around 30 decorative house plants, among them multiple aloes of different sizes and ages so harvesting some goo now and then is easy.

Greetings Chris, love your videos and definitively using your kind advice and instructions as a guide and action plan on my dreadlocking journey. Thank you :). Back to the comment........... 4 days after getting my new backcombed dreads is really Itchy, a little painful and starting to get greasy. I noticed that it gets itchier whenever I wear my headband. Definitely, very important to change headband for a clean one every day, as well as a daily change of your pillow case or old shirt used to cover dreads at night.

Let me add something. As usual your totally right about the deep cleaning removing residue and reasons for itchiness. Another reason for itchiness is your scalp is No longer getting the stimulation it used to when you brushed your hair. Without that stimulation blood flow will be decrease and sebaceous glands will get unbalanced. I suggest getting a scalp massager or a shampoo brush to GENTLY massage the scalp and give it the attention it craves. Shampoo brushes can be bought online or at beauty supply stores for a few bucks. They are a good investment.

yeah thats exactly my problem, before i had dreads in i would run my hands through my hair and sorta massage my scalp, wasnt itchy, just felt good lol, i really noticed how much i missed doing it and i noticed my scalp got less healthy from the lack of stimulation, i now do some light rubbing to lower irritation, still doing research about what else i can do to actually get rid of the flakes, before i started the "light rubbing" of my dreaded scalp i would actually get sores on my head, still do every once in awhile, kinda like a bedsore, i put neosporin on it, that usually heals them idk why i went on so long about this, im mouthy when im stoned lol

hey there i watched youre other video about washing dreadlocks the one wth you pour acv on your scalp i think. i did almost the same except washed mne first with dr.woods with a little bit of baking soda then rinse then i used a white vinegar coz its cheap and readily available here in the philippines and i put on some dried rose mary on the vinegar for an hour. then rinsed it last wednesday then yesterday i did it again no more flakies but sorta softened my dreads eheheeheh. learned another thing from you sir ^^.now im trying the one with combining dreadlocks or congoing 3 dreadlocks.finally saw the roots of your dreads i sorta got the same thing going on with my dreads.thanks and again and more power god bless.

One more question not involving dandruff, when I wash my hair I try not to leave it in the water to long cus im afraid ill fuck up the knots or something or like ill get more loose hair than im supposed to, how long should I keep my hair in the water to get a proper cleaning for dreads as young as mine?

The first shampoo I used right after getting my dreads was knotty boy, and I noticed it left tons of residue in my hair and made my head VERY itchy and irritated, not to mention it loosened my hair quite a bit after every use. I switched to an organic shampoo bar because this Kauai girl whom had really nice dreads that were nearly touching the ground recommended it to me, she said not to use any big name brands they all have to much stuff in them and that the best soaps for dreads are simple and natural. My hair is knotting better and looks healthier after switching to bar soap. FYI don't rub the bar in your hair, you have to lube up your hands with it and then massage it into your head!

My irritation is coming from the gel that's being used on my hair after it dries when its renewed. However because of work i have to get my hair done every 2 weeks. I'm at starter stage here's what i do. I wash my hair every 4 weeks. when i go get my hair re twisted after washing there's gel put in while re twisting and then when done i sit under the dryer for 45 mins to allow for drying. the itching however comes in almost always 3-4 days after its done. so what could I possible doing wrong? or this itching is normal because its growing?

I wash my hair with bicarb soda but can sometimes be a little impatient with the whole rinsing process, so I was wondering do I need to be concerned at all with residue, considering that the main ingredient with the deep clean process is also bicarb soda?... And do I actually need to deep clean my hair anyway?

hi LAZYDREAD, i got my dreads done on 7-11-2015, dealt with the extreme itchiness for 10 days and washed it on the 17th. by the time i got dreads i had eased off to washing my hair 2x a week. i havnt washed my hair in 4 days now, and my head is extremly itchy again and have dandruff ( i didnt have dandruff before dreadlocks). so obviously my dandruff is due to the different conditions my hair is in, no conditioner, no brushing etc etc. do you reccomend changing shampoos (currently using Dread Empire shampoo) to fix the problem or is this all expected and normal and part of the process for a few more weeks.

Do you think washing 1 a week is to little? my dreads are about 2 months 1 week old...they are holding together really well even after showers usually just the tips feel looser after a wash. My dreads are pretty short the shortest dreads being about 4 inches and the longest ones being 5-6 inches im using Knotty boy bar soap for my dreads...theres like no residue in my opinion should i go to every 3-4 days

I personally use dollylocks dreadlock shampoo bar, just putting that out there btw. It seems to do the trick, plus i can say as somebody who deals with an itchy scalp, it really soothes the negetive sensation. i recently ordered a new bar from the same company but to anybody whos wandering, i recommend the rosemary pepermint dreadlock shampoo bar from dollylocks. oh and p.s. i stay away from knotty boy since countless reviews on amazon claim that it leaves some sort of "film" on your dreads.

+Toshie Nins having your hair tied up is DEFINITELY the reason why your first set of dreads didn't mature properly... The reason is, is that the tied up hair wasn't able to move and cause friction (which creates the knots, and helps them to properly mature). With young dreads, it is best to keep your hair down as much as possible until they mature, and if you HAVE to tie them up/keep them out of your face, try keeping them in a headband or tuck them into a tam (which will allow them to move more than a ponytail would). Anyway, good luck with your new set of dreads! :)

@nfz3809
@nfz3809 10 лет назад
How careful should you be with new dreads, can you almost treat them as if they were matured, (like draging roughly with the towel, bending them- tie them up in a bun friquently, etc) or will that risk loosening them up more/ kind of undo them? Also do the dreads risk to be curly as my normal hair would've been when i'd get them wet? Since my tips have become alittle curly already.
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
Be sensible with them - don't be deliberately rough with them. When they're young, they're only held with a few loose knots and so you can obviously damage them if you're too rough with them.

I'm thinking of getting dreads. I have super long THICK horse hair. I already have to wait a week or longer to wash my hair due to how oily it gets after washing 4 days or sooner an I get super bad dandruff. This is what I'm worried about with dreads 😬 when my hair does start to get dandruff. I have not!! Yet come across a good shampoo an conditioner with my regular non dread hair. I want dreads but fear of the server dandruff ☹️

Question- New dreads are crazy itchy( just under two weeks old.) i did try to taper down washing pre dreading. I hope that itchiness will fade in coming weeks. How early should deep cleans start on new dreads since they are more fragile? Do you see any benefit in products like Dreadheadhq's " the head honch" ?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
shep6901 You can deep clean younger dreads provided you are careful with the ACV and be aware that adding oils can loosen them. I don't know what "the head honch" is and I can't comment on products that I have not reviewed... but I'm unlikely to ever buy anything from them.

I was wondering if its okay to use either Neutrogena T-Gel Shampoo or Thursday Plantations tea tree scalp care shampoo on dreads and then in case of possible residue build up use a baking soda and apple cider vinegar rinse to soak the dreads in once a week?
@ravenalexandria9812
@ravenalexandria9812 8 лет назад
T-Gel isn't very good for dreadlocks. I'd say try to stick to the most residue-free shampoo you can find, it's just easier that way. If there is a Kroger or Wal-Mart close to you I'd pick up a bottle of either Cantu Shea Moisture shampoo or, even better, Avalon Organics Strengthening Peppermint or their Lemon Clarifying shampoo. I use the peppermint and it works wonders for me, I haven't noticed any residue buildup whatsoever.

First of all, thank you SO much! Your videos have been quite helpful. I'm about two weeks into the neglect method right now. How often should I be washing my hair with this method? Is it okay to sleep on damp hair for now (its not locked up yet)? I have to tie my hair up in a bun for work, will this disturb the process in anyway? Is it true that beads help the hair to lock up?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 9 лет назад
kidswithunrulyhaircuts Wash it as you feel is necessary, keeping a regular period of time between each wash.It is not recommended to sleep on damp hair.Tying the hair up will restrict the movement and slow the progress.Beads will not lock the hair up faster - if they're too tight in one place they'll have the opposite effect. They're pretty additions, but not integral to locking up hair.

Hello, I've had my dreads for about a year or so now, and have therefore not been using 'normal shampoo' since, I've recently (the past few months) started getting bad dandruff and it's also inside the middle of a few of my dreads, I've tried baking soda, ACV and lemon juice, I've just bought some tea tree that I'll dilute and spray on my scalp daily and a new 'dandruff' dread shampoo, I was just wondering if there was anything more I could do to get the white bits out of the middle of them as it looks gross and is embarrassing and nothing seems to be helping! :(
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 9 лет назад
Laura Welsh It may require repeated applications, but I would look to continue soaking them in bicarb - making sure that you don't in fact use too much bicarb in the water - as that can go on to get left behind in/on the dreadlocks too.

Question- I didn't have dandruff before dreads, but now I do. I have been washing my dreads every seven days. I wash my hair with sulfate and paraben free shampoo. Would you recommend the alternating with the T gel shampoo, or try respacing out my washings (like every three days, for example)? I went straight to washing once weekly and I have had dreads for six weeks. Just started having this problem in the last couple days. Thanks for any advice.
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
Macey Budke I would audition different shampoos until I found one that worked. Alternating with something like T-gel would not be a great long term solution. While it's good to have a shampoo that's free from things like sulfates and parabens... it doesn't really have much of a bearing on how appropriate the shampoo is for dreadlocks.

It is basically a hair pick which is suppose to help with "stimulating" the scalp of dreads. Probably another gimmicky product. So should oils be avoided altogether with new dreads or just in soaks rather than sprays? Also how long until you can wash a little more normal? Would it be best to just do non rubbing washes/gentle cleanse for the first few months?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
shep6901 Oils don't HAVE to be avoided, it depends on the person. As long as you are aware of what the oils can do, you just have to decide whether that's something you want/need at the time. Once you start washing them, you can start washing them as your (new) "normal". You will undoubtedly be rather gentle with them while they're young instinctively.

Question! In my second set of dreads I was not aware that you should leave them down. I wore them up every day for 5 months. The ends of my dreads were turning into balls and looked like they would fall off at the end of my dreads. For some reason, my dreads did not seem to mature AT ALL other than just one! Could having them up be the cause? Or could it be because I used crochet to help start them? My new dreads are just backcombed and much neater, could it be my hair (straight and poofy)?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
You've got to balance things out - having them down all the time is often impractical for day-to-day life... but having them up all the time certainly won't help them lock up - as they can't move. If they're frequently tied up tightly at the same point you can also get negative things happening at the point at which they're tied. However having them tied up all the time wouldn't stop them completely as they'd still be getting lots of friction while you wash and sleep on them.
@TheDearestOfThings
@TheDearestOfThings 10 лет назад
So it would be best to have up only when it is a must. or would a head band (not tightly fitted) be a better choice? My dreads are almost too short to tie up.

Question: I got really bad dandruff. Its everywhere and the flakes are all in my 2 week old dreads. So would the flakes mess up the locking process like residue? Also does the T Gel shampoo that you said helps with it have conditioner
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
At 2 weeks it is normal to have some irritation. Even if you've trained your scalp to go longer between washes and gotten used to a new shampoo, there's going to be discomfort at only 2 weeks. This is because the scalp conditions are different for locked hair, the oils are no longer distributed all over your head - on the plus side it stops your hair from looking greasy! on the down side it means that all those oils are trapped between the scalp and where the knots start and it takes time for things to balance back out. If you continue to have irritation I would look into alternative soaps. T Gel is a dandruff specific shampoo, however it is not residue free and not therefore not something to use as your everyday, every wash shampoo.

Question! Can i just NOT use shampoo? would that be alright?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
Water by itself will not clean the dreadlocks. If you use just water for long enough you'll get to a point where you're used to it and it won't feel irritating anymore.. but it won't really be getting cleaned as water can't remove old oils etc.

I have a question do I have to use these special types of shampoo for dreads or can I use any type of any shampoo like heads and shoulders
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 6 лет назад
You need to use a shampoo that won't leave soap residue behind in your hair. Generally Head & Shoulders won't work for this.

Is it normal to have to separate dreads a lot when they are babies? My dreads are about 1 1/2 weeks old so they are super fluffy and have lots of loose hairs
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
Yes indeed they'll need lots of regular separating while they're young. The more often you do it, the easier it is to do. It's also easier if you do it while they're damp.

+Amboy Cudi That's a really good question, I hope he answers it soon, my thinking is that it wouldn't work because even those the baking soda does remove residue I feel like if you used regular shampoo all the time that the baking soda wouldn't be able to get out all of the residue.

Use Lemon juice on your scalp. Leave it as long as possible. Hours/over night if you can then wash it out. It kills the candida bacteria that causes dandruff. I have used this method along with a million others, and this is the best/most successful one I have found. Watch Rhett and Link on Good Mythical Morning, can't remember the episode, but got the lemon juice idea from them. Also with dreads, or any hair type for that matter, use a strainer when extracting the juice from the lemon. Trust me, I speak from experience, you will get rid of the dandruff, but then your sitting for hours picking out lemon pulp. Not fun.

I have a friend I did dreadlocks on, and he's dreads are locking up pretty face. One problem though-His front two are in his face all te time, right in front of his eyes, and it gets quite annoying. Could you make a video on how to train your dreads to go away from your face..fixing dread problems? Thanks Lazy Dreads
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
While they're young they'll fall where they want to fall. You can spend all day pushing them back - they'll still fall back to their original position. When they get older, heavier and more rope-like they'll be easier to place and part. In the meantime a headband can be used to hold them back.

any other good anti dandruff shampoo besides tgel? I've worked in alot of nursing homes, and many of the residents use that shampoo, and I can't stand the smell of it! it just reminds me of wiping ass....
@gh0stb0n3r
@gh0stb0n3r 9 лет назад
peachpieemily Note: I don't have dreads, but am considering them and came here because I already have to treat for dandruff. That said, Nutrogena makes its cousin T-Sal that has a milder smell than T-Gel. It's a different chemical than Gel, so I would do comparison research first to see if it's what you want. Walgreens makes a good generic version of it.

peachpieemily Shampoo is a lot of trial and error - there are tens, probably hundreds of different things that people use to wash their dreadlocks, what works for one person won't necessarily work as well for another. You have to keep trying different ones out - some will work, some won't. Once you find the ideal fit, well then you can stop searching :)

2-3 weeks into freeform, i havent washed my hair with shampoo from my start but the dandruff buildup was annoying n i washed my head with head n shoulders n at the spot where i shampooed my scalp the knots went undone Q_Q thus making me look like an imbecile it was all sectioned n everything 2 Q_Q im kinda freaking out n im thinking of combing my hair n doing the dreads by hand via twist n rip, soo should i leave it n ignore the top of my head that i messed up or should i dread it my self ?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 9 лет назад
kasplay If you suddenly stop washing your hair and wait 3 weeks, then yes, it's going to build up and get irritating. You should wash the hair, albeit possible not as often as you would 'normally'... however not with head and shoulders shampoo as that's not designed to encourage hair to be knotty... it's designed to do the opposite and so will work against what you're trying to do. I'm not sure I'd worry so much as to take everything out and start over as... well... you've lost 2-3 weeks... which is not all that much considering how long freeform dreadlocks can actually take.

My dreads are 5 days old and they're very itchy. A couple months before i've had dreads I only washed for like once or twice a week. Idk what to do. Maybe the sea salt spray has caused this? Also my dreadlings have come very loose, lots of stray loose hair, i fear that they will come off when I wash them for the first time :( help

@kaelmolo1432

oh damn, sorry for not replying. it's my 9th month now, and the itchiness only comes when I forget to wash my hair after 5 days or so, or the weather is very humid or hot. I think it's a problem with my scalp. The fly aways have lessened now and most of the dreadlings have started to mature into tight ropes that are visible most of the days. some days though they just dont look like dreads coz of the strays on the surface. The sea salt spray worked with locking, but I also use a tea-tree oil spray w/ lavender oil mixed wiwth water if there's unbearable itchiness. hope this helps.

Justin Martinez I havent used a crochet hook coz i've heard from a lot of dreadheads that it breaks the hair inside. I tend to avoid anything of external force as I want them to grow as naturally as possible (without actually being started from neglect)
