Do you shoot primarily autofocus or manual focus? Why?

Thanks for this. I was getting pretty frustrated with the poor quality auto-focus, but your explanations of the different options has helped me find some more usable solutions, so i can still get some decent footage

Like your style and keep the videos coming!!! I've been using the G85 now mainly for video now for 18 months and agree that 1-point @ 1080p with a smallish aperture is the only way the AF can really work. Typically I use the AF-ON option assigned as back-button focus and manually pull focus if I need to.

For video I have found Tracking mode works best. 1080p definitely works better than 4K.

So what would be best settings for shooting on the golf course. I usually am by myself and have to put the camera on a tripod. What settings should I use so that when I make a swing or move out of where I was standing it doesn't go crazy and try to go in and out of focus? Thanks for the tips!

I'm still using the G80 (EU) mostly for photography, and mostly I stick to one area with the smallest box. Must mess about with the others see how it goes.

I have had the G85 for over 2 years, the autofocus is so crap that selling it was a joy !!

You did a great job with this. Does the GH85 extend past the 30 minute mark if you wall plug it with the fake battery? No problems with getting clean HDMI? Thinking of it for a b-roll camera and for streaming. What do you think?

Just wanted to say I had exactly the same reaction when I first tried the tracking mode! The realtime tracking of small objects is very impressive and surprisingly reliable, but ultimately useless since it never focuses on what it's tracking.

Yes, very helpful and it tells me that I'm not the only one who's pissed off at Panasonic. Now with the Olympus OM 1 Mark 2 at 700 bucks used at BH, and the Fuji XS10 at less than 1000 bucks, there is absolutely no reason to even get a used GH5 or wait for that hypothetical GH6 if t's going to only have an autofocus based on constrast technology. I mainly use my camera in manual with adapted lenses but I do need reliable autofocus when I vlog and it's happening more and more and frankly the 85 simply can't do it well. Good buy Panasonic!

What focus area setting would you recommend for a self talking head video; simply pointing the camera at myself, at a table, speaking? I'm shooting at 1080 @ 60fps. Thanks for the video and any help you can provide.

I don't know why, but I have the impression the 25mm has horrible autofocus while recording. Before, it does it fine, but once you hit the record button, it just goes nuts, starts hunting focus and can't focus properly. The 12-60 works way much butter for that, although, it's a slower lens.

So if i want to film a group of people, say a band, 1 area and stretch the focus box as big as possible?

Any better when not shooting wide open though? Assume you shot at 1.7 for this

The tracking point track pretty well, but the af can't focus on it as fast as possible.

Can't expect much, because AF in G85 is purely contrast detection, if there is phase detection, thing would be better

its the 25 lense that is bad for auto focus. i have a lot of lenses and the 25 1.7 is the worst of all when it comes to autofocus. when i use the 12-60 3.5-,6 its much better. the olympus 12-40 2.8 is pretty good also . good lenses give you good autofocus with this cam.

Just noticed that you've added the battery hand grip to your G85. I was wondering do you keep have 2 batteries loaded when using the grip? If so, when the battery in the camera is depleted, do you have to remove the battery grip to recharge it?

49 Area is the worst just forget it’s even there. The only two usable ones are Face and 1 Area. My Kit Lens 12-60 3.5-5.6 performs better than the 25 1.7 from casual testing.

That's my main complaint about this camera, the auto focus isn't very good for moving subjects and the manual focus is jumpy/unnatural feeling.

Record in manual as G80 cannot focus positivity. Too much hunting even after focus.

You must don't know what you're doing because I've shot short movies on the g95 and had no problems with the auto focus, just put it in the A mode or the Movie mode with continuous AF and 49er.

They called the G7 etc a 4K camera but then we find out it cant focus etc in 4K. Lovely. Can anyone help me with my 25mm f1.7. I cant rack focus by manually turning the lens wheel because it has some excessive play or focus by wire so it lags heavily and doesn't respond to turns, meaning the same turn does different focus ramps each time i repeat it with a focus rod attached to the lens for accuracy (found out it ramps to different lengths for the same half turn depending on how fast you turn the ring). It seems Panasonic is a shit company when it comes to video and nowhere near Canon. From crippled lenses to crippled cameras. Imagine my plight, a camera that cant focus, with any lens, there is no method of focus marking, unless you can turn it from mark A to mark B at EXACTLY the same speed like a robot.
