Panasonic GX8 Review - 5 Years Later 

Fast forward even further into the future, just got a GX8 Silver edition - again (April 2024!), after having one from 2015/16, when I concluded it was one of the best cameras I ever owned from an innovative form factor, IQ and versatility angle. It's just as good now as then, and I have just had a Sony A7S Mk3 for a year, that cost a tad more than the GX8 did even in 2015! Both produce tack sharp clean 4K video, and the GX is ergonomically excellent thanks to the flip up EVF that makes product shots, street photography and low level shots of small flowers, muchrooms, streams, pets etc less neck and back breaking. Now to watch you review to ensure I made a wise choice at £310 inc 14-42 kit lens that isn't too bad really! ;)

Thank you for that informative, authentic and funny review. I bought a GX8 includung the 20mm Panasonic 1,7. I take it more often with me as my Nikons D800E or my D5300. Especially this tilting EVF amazes me. By the way a little tip to improve the composition in your video: Put yourself a little bid aside from the backgiund with the shelf of the books. According to the 2/3rds-rule you sit on the right and the background is on the left. Only an friendly idea. STAY HEALTHY :)

Nice and honest video. I too have a GX8 and love it along with my GX80. No interest in the obsessional pixel counters, my interest is the image.

I use mine in a very simple way : I choose aperture and Iso (as low as possible) and I let it do the job. I never use the screen but the folding eyepiece is great. I use the Leica's 15mm and 12-60. Good camera, small and non-intrusive.

I got one, great well built photography camera.. I have had canon full frame & APSC cameras but wanted a smaller set up. Got the Lumix 12-35 f2.8, 35-100 f2.8 and the little 20mm f1.7 pancake lens.. Nothing really wrong with this type of kit, you get your setting right and take care with composition and you'll get great shots. You can get drawn in to all the reviews that you need this spec or that a certain format or make/model is no good now, but it's funny that the very same people only a few years before would be singing the praises of that very same camera or lens. Anyway point being the kit is as good as you are..

thanks for the positive review, i have had the GX8 for about 2 years now, bought a couple good lenses for it too, am now looking at Vlogging with it, can you recommend a good Gimbal that works well with this camera ? there is a lot of reviews for the gx8 but not much covering the right gimbal ? and what lens would be best for Vlogging , thanks again

I am curious the recording limit on it in 4K 30 and how good is the battery life?

Hey, wait a minute. A micro four thirds sensor is the same size no matter how many pixels it has. So why would they have a hard time squeezing it into a smaller body?

IBIS work for both video and photo? Or for photo only?

I am looking for a GX8 at a good price. As this is a photography body, I am surprised Panasonic provided a flippy screen. I prefer the tilty screen. I find the contrast based DFD more than adequate for photography. As you point out, the DFD autofocus has a lot to be desired when using it for video. Have a GX9. I want the weather sealing and mic jack. Hard to believe these bodies are still commanding >$400. I will wait for the price to come to me unlike the Fuji X100v. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

I had one for six months - looks and feels great. Images were a disappointment - I sold it and went back to my Nikon D7100. Far superia in every way for my needs.

I takes as an noob a lot of attention to this camera, it will be the first camera because until today i was stuck on the old camcorder Panasonic HDC-SD 90 which has the same issue as you mentioned: bad autofocus. That means for my behaviour not the cam that I need. Really pity because on the other hand it had it all, water resist, strong battery, seen an video where it lasted more than 30 minutes in the hot sun of California. For example the Sony RX100 gave up within 15 minutes. The RX 100 has it all also but has then the downside one cannot film for a long time. Even the Sony a7 mark 3 stand 15 minutes in the hot sun of California. What to order? Must have decent sensor so it can film blurry background. Water protected, stabilization on lens and body. Learn last days that this lens have both, tele zoom 10 x and wide angle, named the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140 mm F/3.5-5.6 ASPH. I learn some the last days but need to start all over again, have an idea Sir?

So it's only good for still photography and still B footage.

After 5 years and not one mention of the terrible shutter shock? Yes, it's a nice camera, but don't try to take still photos between 125 and 250 of a second or it will be blurred.
