I did this journey last year eastbound. Unfortunately, the train went through Germany and Salzburg as the route via Kitzbuhel was shut for engineering works. Pro tip: the SBB 2nd class coaches aren't as bad as they look. The seats are quite comfy and I like how every seat has a window view

7:37 Oh man, that whole section between Leoben and Stainach-Irdning brings back a lot of memories. I used to travel along there every week to get to an from a boarding school I was attending. Pro Tip: The next time you‘re in that neck of the woods, you should take a ride along the „Salzkammergutbahn“between Stainach and Attnang-Puchheim. The landscape is spectacular, especially between Bad Aussee and Gmunden.

I didn't know that such coaches existed on any main line trains. I rode in narrower panoramic coaches on both the Bernina and Glacier Expresses a few years back. I still think the Bernina line was the most eye-popping rail experience of my life, although the scenery on this route runs it a close second. You were lucky to have so many vacant seats around you for the entire trip. That would likely never happen in summer! I'll definitely be looking forward to your video on the Bernina route!

A trip that is definitely on my bucket list. To really enjoy it, it's best to wait for the most harsh winter conditions and deepest snow, then this trip becomes probably the most beautiful one in Europe, as far as mainline travel goes. Fun fact: from June 2023 the SBB Panorama car is scheduled to operate on the Graz - Przemysl route too, in the consist of train EuroCity "Porta Moravica".

3:53 I believe this is how all train coaches should be designed! Lovely large windows meaning you can see out of them with no issues (and no issues with seat alignment), plus lots of lovely natural light. You should even be able to get good radio/3G/4G/5G/GPS as well with those windows being so large.

Thank you Dylan for an absolutely superb video! I have travelled on this train, and I can very warmly support your comments. I would, in particular, strongly recommend reserving a seat if you want to use the (SBB-owned) fist class panorama coach. The second class carriages used to be OBB. However since the introduction of the 1095 Euro 'Klima Ticket' on 26th October 2021 OBB has been desperate for second class carriages; hence the Swiss carriages. The Klima Ticket is an annual pass valid on all Austrian public transport INCLUDING INTER-CITY TRAINS. Compare this with the the German 'Deutschland Ticket' starting on May 1st which is 49 Euros a month for all German public transport, EXCEPT INTER TRAINS (and coaches).

Thanks for the trip I didnt make. Oct. 2022 I was planning to purposely take the reverse of this train from Zurich as far as Schwarzach-St. Veit to make a connection for Villach. But when ready to book was advised track work east of Innsbruck would probably delay the train and I'd miss the Villach train. So I opted for an earlier Chur train with a 2 minute connection at Sargans to a RailJet which originated at Sargans. I was amazed that the 60-70 people making the same connection all made it, as it was a down the stairs run through the passageway and up the stairs to the RJ. The RJ was moving before I ever found my seat! This schedule took me via Salzburg for a connection to Villach. As it turned out the RJ was 20 minutes late into Salzburg and I missed the connecting train. So I had a nice lunch there and ultimately caught the very same train to Villach that I had originally wanted to take. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful sunny trip. The following morning I caught an early morning train to Lake Bled, Slovenia.

This is a great railway carriage indeed, I spent more than 6 hours from Basel (a city you must visit some time!) to Düsseldorf a few years ago. I would agree that these seats are very comfy and the airy interior is relaxing for a long journey. As a swiss and regular SBB user I can say that I like the comfort of the second class seats also. These are also comfy and recline a bit and I have no problems to spend a few hours there as well. I even prefer these over newer trains. I assume that the delay in Graz was probably due to some works on the line north of the city, leaving only one track operable (and thus waiting for the night train to come in). In Austria trains (now) ride on the right track, but out of Graz you were on the left track. The delay was probably planned and probably compensated by shorter stops at the intermediate stations.

The second class seating is not that bad - it's 10 bays of 4/8 seats along an UIC-X coach of 26.4m . Compared to the "contemporary quality" of a RAB(D)e502 seating(20:11 - the connection to Chur...) - this stock from the past millennium is lavish! Btw: The night train at min 10:10(ZellAmSee) is a seasonal ski charter from the Netherlands. The rented couchette rolling stock is based in Crailsheim (GFF). These trains are sold as package tour only. The Optima Express is the summer job for this stock. The stainless sleeper coaches are managed by TRI - they were also supposed to support the lately introduced SJ Euro Night between Sweden and Germany ...
@markoobid2005
@markoobid2005 Год назад
No, the SJ Euro Night sleepers are newer AB32s type ex-ÖBB, owned by RDC, rebuilt from T2S sleeping cars. The stainless steel sleepers (AB30 ex-P type) are scheduled to run on the private "European Sleeper" between Brussels and Berlin/Prague.
@The0070049
@The0070049 Год назад
@@markoobid2005 Sorry - I confused something here ... of course it's AB32s for the SJ sleeper Germany-Sweden. Thanks for information about the TRI-sleepers - the upcoming European Sleeper. That's a brillant routing for an overnight offer. I remember travelling on the successor(EN Phoenix/Jan Kiepura) of the mighty Ost-West-Express between Prag and Amsterdam. That time, the train was routed via Cologne ... By this occasion I realized after some quick research, that the new night train will be run by a dutch company. The moral of the story is, that I really enjoyed a return ride later on this same journey betweeen Rotterdam and DenHaag with these ICK/exDB-Bm coaches - which left the Netherlands again shorlty afterwards to be transfered towards Sweden appearantly(according some other writer(Z20900) on this Transalpin-Video) However - always feeling quite jealous these days, seeing the prospering overnight rail offer towards our tourism rivaling neighbour ...

Thank you for a great many excellent images, one of which was entirely imaginary: any parent of young children will know that on long car journeys you may have to stop from time to time to let them 'run around'. So your saying that your stop was longer 'so the engine could run around' conjoured a wonderful image of a young locomotive leaping around the station to tire itself out! (To save anyone explaining I do know what the phrase really means BTW.🙂)

When I took the Transalpin, there was a defferent loco put on the other end at Selzthal instead of the run-round of the same loco. Did you also notice that they added a second loco on the front from Innsbruck onwards? Possibly because of the gradients over the Arlberg Pass?

That is a nice and quiet day but the seating plan on this and other Swiss trains puts me off. I know some of the high-speed ones have seats where you are not forced to look into someone's face. But these ones here are not right for me, especially when the train is packed with people and there is forced interaction with random strangers.
@Fan652w
@Fan652w Год назад
I am quite sure your view is very much in the minority. The 'face-to--face' seating you dislike is almost universal on Swiss trains. (The panorama carriage was Swiss.) This means that in Switzerland, the seats are still almost always aligned with the windows, and you get a perfect view of the scenery. The vast majority of passengers want that.
@markoobid2005
@markoobid2005 Год назад
The Italian-made "Astoro/Pendolino Nuovo" trains, riding Munich to Zürich and/or (Frankfurt - ) Basel/Geneve - Milan are the only ones in SBB fleet to have airplane style seats. Simply because they weren't designed for Swiss, but for Italian railways. Yes I agree with you, I hate vis-a-vis seating and even more I hate compartments. But Swiss seem to be OK with that.

Maybe it's because I didn't have to pay (I am traincrew in the UK and was travelling on an 'international rail staff' voucher) Or perhaps it was because I'd just climbed a 4,164m Alpine peak that morning But I found the seat to be quite well padded, and comfortable enough. 😅😅😅

I always wonder why they don't just put one locomotive at either end of the train. By doing that only the drivers has to walk to the other side and no time is lost on shunting. It's the norm in The Netherlands for any loco-hauled passenger train like the Intercity direct.
