WTF, groove metal. Rex Brown said even him self when Metallica stopped playing trash metal did Pantera see opportunity to fill that position as trash metal stars. Rex answer was absolute YES. When metallica stopped playing trash metal, Pantera kicked the closing door in and came in with a bang. So TRASH METAL
@@VitaminPete616 easy there Pete. You miss understand my point. Pantera had a groove with their insane rhythm section that almost all metal bands (before or since) could not match. All 4 of the boys have name checked it in interviews as well while we are on the subject. Of course they had plenty of Thrash metal elements (along with Power Metal if you recall). I would certainly maintain they were a hell of a lot more than a Thrash Metal band. They were proudly Heavy Metal. Period. And god I miss the 4 of them. Those shows were crushing live & picking up GSTK on release day & blasting it in the parking lot for the first time was one of the best moments from the scene in the 90s.
@@jmscrft Phil became woke. Resented the confederate flag even though him and dime loved to represent their heritage through that flag. Phil became another walking bag of meat.
The album version is WAY better because it has a very soulful acoustic intro before it gets into the heavy part and just sets the whole attitude of the song so much better.
Certainly one of the best outros I've ever heard. The duel between the voice and the guitar. The album version has a minute or so of slow music at the start, but someone decided to cut it when they made this video.
Pantera is the heart and soul of metal. Thrashy, groovy, heavy. All four members are/were absolute talents. They're my go-to for heavy music. No bad albums and no bad songs. The Beatles of Groove Metal.
I first heard vulgar display of power around the same time. I would listen to it on loop while playing Tetris for hours. Really glad I got to see them live so many times from around 96 to early 2000s.
I'm told by my cousin, who was Pantera's photographer and a childhood friend of the lead singer's, that this song was written about his dog which got ran over by a float at Mardis Gras. The visuals for the video make you think it's over a person.
Pantera are touring Europe right now, Phil and Tex, the vocalist and bassist respectively are the surviving members. Last time I was learning guitar, this was the song.
Such a catalogue to choose from! Cowboys From Hell, Mouth For War, Walk, 5 Minutes Alone and Domination are all bangers! Keep up the good work Sabina! New subscriber here 😄❤️
It's easy to see why this was their biggest hit, it has such crossover appeal that almost anybody could enjoy it. I would say to adjust your expectations if you decide to listen to more Pantera, they don't have many other songs like this with the soft and high-pitched singing, they are pretty much full-on heavy after this. I would recommend "Walk" or "This Love" to check out next.
You're gonna have a blast discovering pantera. Recommend checking out the album version of this track to. Theres a whole intro that adds some context and build to the track.
My intro to Pantera was in the late 1990s. I was a late bloomer as a music fan. I was in my teens owning all Van Halen albums, then got into Metallica. For a time that was the heaviest it got. Then my cousin showed me this song and I liked it, and eventually was able to handle heavier and heavier stuff. Yes, there are heavier bands and more famous bands with more accolades. But even Metallica comes to mind second or third when I think of metal music behind Pantera and maybe Slipknot, depending on the criteria involved.
In the old south, people locked their doors when passing a cemetery because they believed the spirit could enter the vehicle. He will unlock his door because he wants her spirit to come in. Hence, the meaning of that line.
Pantera paved the way for so many groups that are still taking ideas from them after 23 years. Groove metal, the metal breakdowns, pinch harmonics bent to he**. And Pantera is still the greatest metal group in music history! Rest in peace Dimebag Darrell Abbott and Vinny Paul Abbott. AKA thunder and lightning! AKA the Abbott brothers!
I saw them 3 times on 1997-98 and I saw them on their second reunion show! Here on my city in Mexico! Zakk Wylde is amazing on the guitar...and Charlie Benante from Anthrax on drums! Phil voice is Awesome with the years! ❤
LoL cool reaction! Love Pantera. when I was little, but little kid, my uncle took me to an Ozzfest, then walking from stage to stage to see different bands, we found Dime and some other guys walking approaching to us, I was in my uncle shoulders and Dime messed up my hair. At that time I wasn't older enough as to get tthis as an epic moment, but, my uncle kept talking about it for many years, then Dime was killed and now you know, it is such a good memory I have. RIP Dime!
Good, raw, authenticate reaction, nice job! I immediately added this song to my playlist and listen to it frequently. The music video reveals the versatile, emotional, visual aspects of the song and composition. I listen to this song since it was first released but never truly appreciated how amazing it really is until seeing this video.
Great reaction to an amazing song. Pantera are touring again, unfortunately without the drummer and guitar player, who are both passed away...may they both R.I.P.!
Sabina, I LOVE your style of reaction! It doesn’t break the energy, flow, and emotion of the song. It basically allows us to experience it jointly with you. Loved it! On a side note, the font spacing in your notes (love the style) makes it a little tougher to read as some of the words almost appear to blend. Thanks again for the reaction! Much love
Great job with your reaction and thoughts on the song Cemetery Gates from Pantera . This song was about how the lead singer Phil Anselmo those on his mother passing . RIP The Abbot Brother Vinny Paul (🥁)and Dime Bag Darrell.(🎸).
I had the honor of seeing them in concert a few times. Wasn't sure how they would pull off Dime's leads when there should be a rhythm guitar behind it. Sometimes it would just be Dime playing over Rex and Vinnie and sometimes it would have a backing rhythm. I didn't believe that Pantera would have a pre-recorded track. Found out later that his lifelong friend and guitar tech Grady Champion would play rhythm backstage. White Zombie, Pantera and Megadeth was one of the greatest shows I ever saw.
R.I.P. Dime & Vinnie 😔 I really enjoyed this song when it first came out 🤔 it wasn't until years later that I delved deeper into this song and thrusting it up on my favorites list 🤔
Love you you edited with the thoughts in cc instead of dragging it out and stopping the video 30x. First I've seen one do that! So I idk if it's been said, or you know. The song is basically about a significant other that killed herself and will probably put you in tears watching it again. It gets me every time 😢
🤘Pantera comes to Copenhell, thursday the....15 of june I think... Always felt sad I missed them Live, thou this is without Dime and Vinnie, Rip, I feel I've been given a second chance.
This version of Cemetery Gates leaves so much on the cutting room floor, The opening guitars and lyrics that are completely missing in this version are so intense they would leave a knot in your throat & make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
I was personally invited to the video shoot for this and I wish I had kept some memorabilia from that time because to me, they were still a bar band (S tier for sure) that I've seen a hundred time before. I had no idea how big of a deal they would become. This sadly was probably the peak time of my entire life, but it was just another Saturday when it happened. RIP Dime & Vinnie, you'll always be missed.
Hello Sabina. I just started following you on youtube. I'm glad you enjoy the music as many of us do. I first heard this song in 1993. I still do and I can't get enough of it, it's just great. Best regards from Argentina
Check out Philip Hansen Anselmo in Down - New Orleans Is A Dying Whore or Ghost Along The Mississippi. Also featuring Rex Brown (Pantera), Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), Pepper Keenan (Corrosion Of Conformity) and Jamie Bower. Rex Brown was later replaced by Pat Bruders (Crowbar and Goatwhore). Philip are of Danish, Italian and French heritage
When a song physically shakes you to your core, you know it's a gem. I would say you missed out a bit with the album version with the acoustic buildup prior to the music video start, but it was great that you enjoyed the song. Definitely one of my favorites.
ok i love you! best reaction to this song that i"ve seen. I love this song. Metal was very cookie cutter at that time, when we first heard this song, we new Pantera was a New Level.
YES i can easily relate to your reaction when i first heard the song in 1991. oh i know your Danish like i said you look like someone that lived in the same town as me Fensmark is the name of the city :) actually the same road as well kind regards Peter
