North Carolina, USA - soft drink for carbonated beverages. For dish soap, just add water when you finish about half a bottle . We are fortunate in NC because we simply plant lettuce and other greens late in the Fall for harvesting throughout Winter. It's only in the 40's here now but will get cold so we add row covers to keep them going strong on chillier days (though lettuce may eventually fail.) We can grow Kale, Collards and Chard without row covers. And, we will harvest beets and carrots throughout the Winter under row covers. I like the idea of Microgreens in case our greens run out . I'm a non commenter typically but always watch your videos.

In the UK, we called it fizzy drinks, or by the brand name…so Coca cola, etc. Tortillas are easy to make, as you have lard. For beans and rice…beans and rice burritos. I like to make a green chile smother sauce to put over the top, but you don’t have to do that. Or, Bean nachos. Soak pinto beans or black beans overnight in water, and pressure cook them. Chop onions, garlic, a little chorizo, saute in a bit of olive oil, add cumin, coriander, oregano, chile powder, and continue sauteing, then add your beans, some salt, and a bit of water, and simmer for 15 minutes. Take your tortilla chips, put on shredded cheese, put under grill and melt the cheese. Then put on drained beans, guacamole, salsa, bit of sour cream or plain greek yoghurt, some black olives and dig in. Each person can get a plate of these. Good luck on your pantry challenge.

Good video. I have used laundry soap as dish soap in a pinch. I don't know Dan if you will have enough - you might want to only drink two cans a day....lol. I can't say much though because I would be concerned about running out of coffee...lol. Frozen sliced apples are really good for snacking but the paper trick works wonderfully too. It will allow you to ration them like the snacks could be rationing - rationing for treats is a good way to make things last. If you sprinkle your greens on foods after they are made, it is really nice and can be mixed in the breads too - sprinkled fresh is better though I find although the other is nice too. I experimented with squash flours and was surprisingly pleased. I like my beans and use them alot in various dishes but they can also be ground into a flour to stretch your wheat flour - no real recipe for beans except for my tomato sauce beans and the bean soup - I just throw them in here and there. You will be fine!

Burrito bowls! So easy and so customizable to each person’s taste. It’s rice, beans, salsa, sour cream, olives, avocado, hot sauce, whatever really you want to top it with. It can be as simple or complex as you want to make. Also super filling and you can feed a crowd super cheap. I also make bean and cheese quesadillas pretty regularly. Flour tortillas are refried beans are not super hard to make and you can top with sour cream and salsa. So good! Also love bean soups and there’s lots of recipes online. Good luck 👍

Re: ideas to use Beans and Rice... White chicken chili uses a larger amount canellini (or any white beans beans) as a thickener for the dish. Mexican Piccadilly is great served over rice. Of course the old standby of chicken casserole. Taco casserole uses both black and red beans. Pasta De Fagioli uses Cannellini beans (or great northern beans). Refried beans uses pinto beans or black beans or a combo to use with all the Mexican dishes. We also use Spanish rice, in addition to refried beans, when we make our burritos in bulk and freeze. Taco soup uses both red beans and black beans. Chili con carne uses small red beans. Mexican Slow Cooker Beans, Green Chile and Beef over Rice uses pinto beans. We add a layer of pinto beans to our Cowboy Lasagne/casserole. We also use pinto beans in our vegetable soup. We make lots of chicken and rice soup when cold and flu season rolls around. Of course we use red beans, black beans, or pinto beans in tamales. Broccoli and rice casserole.

I think a skill to add is tortilla/ flat bread of any ethnicity. They are so quick and easy and something to make that would be a fun family assembly line. Quick to do fresh but they can be frozen. And you can use any carb...I love squashes. One of those once you do it you can't believe you haven't earlier. Plus they are so good. A 3 person assembly line and a tortilla press can give you stacks of flat bread and then from that home made chips of any flavor.

Hi Chelsea, I am also doing the pantry challenge January and hopefully February with a small budget of £20 for fresh produce or eggs. The only thing I might suggest you get is Castile soap that way of you run out of washing up liquid or shampoo you can use Castile soap with/without essential oils. Coconut oil can be used as conditioner and makes a lovely hair mask you can even add in a little honey if you have some to spare. If you and the girls wanted to honey makes a gorgeous face mask.

I am a first timer for the challenge and it has been going well despite the challenges we have faced all of December. My husband was in and out of ERs and then an almost two week stay in the hospital. Just got him home yesterday. I have a very, very well stocked home grocery store and freezers are filled. I will have to go to the grocery store weekly for milk, eggs, fresh produce and the sandwich bread that my family will eat for sandwiches only. We don't have a farm so dairy and some fresh produce is just what it has to be as far as "my rules". Otherwise, we will do our very best to just use what we have for two months.

We love having canned meat on hand too. We are off grid, so we only have a tiny freezer and we rely heavily on canning to store a lot of our foods. I find having dry beans for storage is great, but I can up a batch to keep on the shelf so they are quick to grab and use without any planning. I'm looking forward to seeing what creative ways you use them. I need new ideas for sure! Squeeze bottles for the mayo! That is brilliant!!! Keeps people from putting dirty knives into the jar too.

Love it! I can't wait to see all the recipes you make. My mom has a unique recipe for our version of "Spanish Rice", she doesn't do spicy at all... so it's not spicy. Take a pound of ground beef and cook it up in the skillet with cumin, salt, pepper, and whatever taco like seasonings you have, set it aside. Remove excess grease, and place in chopped up bell peppers and an onion, doesn't matter what kind. Then add in cooked white rice, like you would a stir fry. Finally, add in some tomato sauce, and season to taste. If you'd like more flavor, I like to add a little garlic and a jalapeno. We've also made this with venison and it turned out wonderful! It's simple, but tasty! You can also add any other veggies you like, my mom likes to add salsa to it instead of the peppers, onions and tomato paste, but I like the fresher ingredients personally, even if they're frozen, it should turn out scrumptious! Good luck with the challenge, we're all routing for you!

Hello from Toronto. A great way to use your beans and squash is to make a hearty winter soup. Any combination of soaked beans. Sauté onions, garlic, carrots. Add large chunks of squash that could be easily mashed when soft. Add broth and beans and simmer until finished. Option to add any meat. Add salt and pepper to taste. The squash will add a great flavour and thickness. Very filling and warming.

I also had sparkling "tree water" from the company Sap Sucker and I'm so sad I can't order those from the US. Also, I'm from New England (Rhode Island) and we say soda. 😆 But I've heard others in the US, I think closer to Michigan, call it pop!

Wow, you are taking the challenge next level. I am going to take on the challenge by cooking meals using what we have in our freezers. That will mean not buying meat or frozen vegetables, and using what’s in our pantry. 😊 I will enjoy following your progress.

I’m from Texas and we call all carbonated drinks cokes. And then we specify what we want. I’d like a Coke. I’d like a Dr Pepper. I’d like a 7-Up, etc..

I LOVE ketchup chips. I have had my Canadian friends send me some. We had them YEARS ago in some stores in Minnesota... but it didn't last long 😢

We call "pop" cokes in the southern US. Doesn't matter the brand or flavor, we say, "Do you want a coke?" And you could say, 'yes, I'll take a pepsi' (or sprite)... etx

Here in the South all flavors are called drinks. Coke products, Pepsi-Cola products etc. are all called the same thing you call by brand or flavor.. Coke, Sprite, Rootbeer, Orange, Strawberry or Pepsi etc. A very popular brand is simple called Faygo but you have to fight over the red flavor.

Growing up in Washington state, we always called carbonated beverages "pop", but then when I moved to California for about 30 years, I picked up what they call carbonated beverages and that is "soda, short for "soda pop".

In the Pacific Northwest of Washington State, we always referred to soda pop as "pop". Friends of mine from the Eastern U.S. states laugh at me, too, when I use the word "pop" when referring to certain carbonated beverages. Oh, I just recalled my parents used the term "pop", and they're from Spokane and Cheney Washington (Eastern side of Washington State.)

"Pop" for frizzy drinks here in the US is a reginal word, many use pop, soda, coke (this is for all drinks and we use the color) or just the name of the brand. Where I grew up in Atlanta, GA we called all fizzy drinks Coke lol, but when I moved north to KY they call it pop.

One of our favorites; 1lb ground beef/venison, 1pnt green beans, and 2 cups rice (before cooking) mix it together and soy sauce. You'll obviously need to adjust amounts, but that's the base ratio. It's tasty, filling and super easy.

I'm from the south in the US, along the gulf coast. We call ALL types of fizzy drinks Coke. You'll get asked what kind of coke you want. :)

In Michigan I always called it pop, but in Virginia it was soda, in California, (LA) i use soda so it is clear. I have changed over to water kefir in Soda Stream seltzer water. I love it . I no longer buy any of that. I went back for a week to a flavored sparkling water and it actually made me sick to my stomach. All those chemicals! I will never do it again. i put 1-3 oz. of fruit flavored water kefir or beet kvass, or fruit juice to my sparkling water. I really enjoy it. NEVER makes me sick!

Minnesota USA: It's pop ...also Zevia & Lacroix type drinks are okay to get a close recipe for with a soda stream. Regular pop type drinks like Pepsi, coke, ginger ale, etc. are not very well substituted... even the brand name Pepsi syrup for soda stream is what the kids call "mid." We haven't found the soda stream to be worth it but we really wanted it to be.

For rice and beans, please look for some Indian dishes.. Chickpea curry - stir fry onions with some curry powder or whole spices and add boiled chick pea to it, cook for sometime and add coconut milk to it.. Adjust the thickness with extra water.. Beans and Squash curry - chop up any squash of your choice, boil it in water with 1 green chile for spice, when ready add boiled beans of choice, cook them together with some coconut milk, this can be made thin or thick by adjusting water and had with rice.. Rajma masala (pinto or kidney beans curry) - boiled pinto beans cooked in tomato onion puree with garam masala.. This is more like baked beans with spices and without meat in it, not sure if baked beans has meat in it, sorry if it doesn't!!! Lentil soup or Dal - boiled lentils added to onions sauteed in some ghee or butter with 1 green chile, this goes so well with boiled rice.. Savoury Bean pancake (Bean Dosa) - Soak different beans of choice overnight, grind them all together with some fresh water making them the consistency of pancake batter.. (Optional - stir fry some onions and add to the batter..) Add little rice flour or semolina to the batter for the pancake to release properly from the pan.. Add Salt to taste.. Make them like pancake but little thin.. Sauteed beans - Stir fry some onions chopped up small, you can add spice if you need, just adding salt pepper is also good, add drained boiled beans of your choice (we normally do with brown chickpea or peanuts or black eyed beans), mix it all together, check for seasoning.. Growing up, this was the snack my mom made for us during week days when we got back from school.. :) Beans and lentils stay good for many many years, we just vacuum seal them in jars or mylar bags. If they are more than 5-6 years, you will need to soak them for longer as beans become harder.. This challenge sounds very interesting.. All the best..

Saving shampoo- wash hair twice, first time with 1/4 the usual amount of shampoo, then again with another 1/4. It will come out just as clean but use half the shampoo. Conditioner- diy apple cider vinegar. its almost free if you make it yourself. yes you smell 'odd' at first but it goes away soon enough, leaves hair super soft, and did I mention its almost free? haha Laundry deterg- diy horse chestnut soap. works really well esp if you dont like the perfumes of commercial deterg Love all your videos, happy challenge!

I make my meatloaf using cooked rice instead of breadcrumbs. Bake it as a round loaf in a cast iron pan. I still season it as a normal meatloaf. Delicious! Give it a try. And I’m from the southern US…we call all carbonated drinks “coke”. Like, “what kind of coke do you want?” 😂

I live in NW Iowa smack dab in the middle of the USA, and we call it POP. I've never tried ketchup chips, you don't even see them around here much, but I squirt some ketchup on a plate and dip plain potato chips in it. We've been unusually warm here too, but in about a week we are supposed to have 7 degrees F for daily highs.

I'm originally from the US Midwest, and it has always been "pop". I agree, soda & soft drink are creeping in. I now live in Hawaii, and when I say "pop" I get a weird look. Ha Ha Can't help it, I'll always call it "pop"!

No way will I be participating....Will be on the sidelines watching. Our most healthy and best part of my prepping items are my support for when shtf. I think we are getting really close to a self inflected depression here in the states. The crazies striped A Safeway store in Washingto, DC...just saying not a good time to deplete our preps. putting up tallow and ghee today, yesterday 10 quarts of pinto beans. Be prepared folks.
