Right now I'm re-foaming 4 exact same speakers + paradigm center channel (2 speakers) + a paradigm sub woofer. Got all the new foam, glue and sealer from simplyspeakers - took about 3 weeks to get to me. These are really good speakers, worth saving. Looking forward to your part 2 video.

I got the foams at Lee's electronics. 3.00 each.

Those little speakers were quite a deal in the day! They have a alu cast frame too but the grille wasn't removable. You should also check the capacitor for the tweeter because it might gives you some trouble after all those years. Great video! Thanks!

Very much looking forward to the rebuild! I just installed a new Creative Sound Blaster Stage v2 2.1 soundbar (to supplement Sony STR-7045 main amplification) that rocks hard and I love like crazy because the cheaper one I had rigged with Sony passive sub blew a speaker. I couldn't see anything bad by eye, but it makes a rattle sound at certain frequencies. It's a 8 ohm 20w 3.25" diagonal screw to screw woofer. I couldn't source it anywhere, so that's why I just bought the new bar instead. I had it mostly repaired with regular tape and music sounded ok, but then virtual instruments on particular single notes caused it to fail hard. I don't think I can source what I'd need to rebuild the damaged one, but your video will be awesome to see all the same. Rock on!

I blew the surrounds on my 8' Cerwin Vega bookshelf speakers. And garbage picked a pair of 10' Punch woofers in a bandpass enclosure. Ordered up surrounds for all and I'm very pleased with the results.

I bet you paid more for your surrounds then i did. How does 2.80 each sound.

@@12voltvids I think I laid out just under $20 including S&H for all four. That included the familiar red surrounds for the Cerwin Vega 8's. Getting those working again was well worth it.

Wow! A cast metal basket, that was a surprise. It is the guts inside that count anyways. I was with a friend of mine when he picked up a set of Pioneer DSS-9D speakers for $10 at a swap meet, because the foam was blown on the woofers, also one of the woofers had a split, or crack in it. Those were designed by TAD group at Pioneer, part of the Elite line, but was not labeled as such. Beryllium ribbon horn loaded tweeters, titanium midranges, ceramic composite diaphram woofers with dual voice coils. I refoamed them for him, repaired the crack with epoxy, and he now powers them with a Nakamichi PA7 power amp, ran them for almost ten year now and the epoxy has held up, and he throttles them up. People can say "Well that wasn't a proper repair", and I say so what? My friend is the one with money in his pocket and a perma-grin on his mug, and how can you top that?

I noticed that the Atom's cousin, the Titan ( great sound by the way) has a weak surround (after quite a few years use). I have a pair that came from a subwoofer set from the local recycling ($40) I fed a Cambridge Azure through them at low volume and was pleased with the sound. The surround on one quickly began to disintegrate and when I opened the box it was practically dust. I'll refoam them, they are far too good to pass on. Surprising bass and very clear mid and top. Well worth a try. Cheers all. ps not sure but I think I saw a pair of Mirage that looked the same except for the badge.

Question! I have paradigm bookshelf speakers and I've noticed some have the hole on the back in line with the tweeter and some the hole us lined up with the woofer... does it make a difference ??

Note how you put a cloth down for your own gear but drag a customers across the bench !!

I always put a cloth down for customers gear. The stuff I don't is stuff that was given to me and I am fixing just to make a video. 5 minutes after the camera goes off the parts come out and the unit is on its way to recycling. Well sometimes it is. Other times I might sell or give away depending on what it is. The only reason I put down a rag here is to keep dist off the grill.

I've come across a pair of these with rotted foams myself. It seems pretty common for the foams to finally rot to the point of failure around the 20 year mark, I'd imagine your volume pushing them was just a coincidence. I've also ownedspeakers from the newer v7 lineup and sadly it is true that they manufacturer the new entry level stuff in a factory over seas. I was a bit surprised to see the Made in China sticker on them when I got them home. Still a solid entry level product but anything made in Canada by Paradigm comes at much steeper price tag these days. They aren't the only ones of course.

I imagine the new supports will make them sound new again. Some speakers are sensitive types that don't need much power for volume. Efficent but can be blown out too easy. Don't forget the glue for the support.

These are not that efficient. My really efficient technics sb7000 don't need more than a few watts to rattle the china in the China cabinet. Here's good for thought.... Why do they call it China when every piece my wife has came from every country except for China!

Actually these are excellent speakers. I am listening to them now. They sound bloody awesome. I pulled my Polk's and put these in. No comparison. Some of the best speakers you can buy are made in Canada. Might be hard for you to accept but that is a fact. Paradigm and PSB. Both top rated speakers.

Hi from the UK. I'm not sure how much those speakers cost, but the way the foam was stuffed inside the enclosure, the toilet roll port and the poor glue application certainly suggest Chinese build. I appreciate that the speaker units themselves may be better quality Canadian products. The sound quality may sound a million dollars, but I hope you did'nt pay that for the speakers.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 3 года назад
It's not a toilet roll. That is actually laminated wood and ur is cut to a specific demention . The glue prevents any rattles. They are made in Canada. Drivers, boxes, shit the wood is probably grown here too.
