Get a hepa air filter to help in the interim. You'll probably need it on high and earplugs to sleep through it. Hopefully the apt is tested and cleared of mould soon.

MOLD is what I thought of as soon as you started talking. It’s horrible & I am so sorry you’re going through this. Even worse is it not being seen people don’t want to believe it’s severe affects. France rules/laws are so different, here in the US a tenant would call a lawyer and withhold rent! Praying sweet girl this is resolved and your health gets back on track. ❤

So horribly sorry to learn this. My family and I had a similar situation in a rental house, however, upon my diligent insistence with the property management company, they did hire someone to test the air quality and had to clean, put in an air scrubber, etc. I empathize with how hard it is to advocate for yourself and I pray there will be a solution very soon. Their non response is simply unacceptable. 💜

STOP paying rent. FORGET finding a new apartment, rent a room from someone IMMEDIATELY, DON'T WAIT. Look on line and quickly just rent a room from someone, your health is to important. Then speak to others in the building, I'm sure you're not alone, there's strength in numbers, threaten the landlord with a class action lawsuit. Have your neighbors take pics of anything that's suspicious as well. Speak with a lawyer that specializes in landlord tenant issues, some lawyers give free legal advice. I hope you're doing better. You've got your medical records and pics as proof. No judge is gonna order you to continue paying rent.

II believe the landlord has to test the apartment before they rent it. They need to hire a firm to test for lead paint, asbestos and mould…using a third party who does this type of testing. You should have access to the results of this test through the agency. I have been a landlord in Paris in past years and this testing is the law.

My mother was living in apartment in a senior facility. It developed black mold. They made her move to a different apartmen while they remediated the mold issue. Your doctor is right. You simply can't stay in that apartment until the mold is removed. One thing you might consider is hiring a mold remediation company to do an assessment and then tell the agency that you will be deducting the cost from your rent. If any work has to be done to remediate you will deduct that also. Give the landlord and agency notice that you will be doing this. I'm a retired real estate attorney in Georgia and this is how we would handle a similar situation. You give the landlord an opportunity to repair (sounds like you've already done that) and if they don't you do the repairs and deduct from the rent. Good luck.
@schirley1267

Bonjour ❤ I just saw your video- I know exactly how you feel on so many levels! That’s so scary, I’m in California…I had a similar experience last December when water got into my apt from from a rainstorm on Xmas day. No one from management would come for 3+ days cuz of the holiday. Bad timing really and protocol at the time. We now have a different property management with better response after this. I was stuck soaking up water with towels as it spread through the carpet into next door. Long story short- I was super sick too for a month but not as bad as your saying, the smallest amount of black mold was on the carpet and the huge air dryers were blowing it throughout my house for 3 days. Luckily my son stayed at my parents for a couple nights so he didnt get sick. I was sick for a month before I realized what happened. My parents are in holistic medicine, my dad tested my liver and it was toxic. The water damage situation got fixed but after a good week or so. All I had to do was drink a spoonful of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water 4x a day. I did it for a month (same amount of time being sick) and was back to normal. Granted you’re In the middle of it not being fixed. So my advice is to drink this daily for 3 month + spanning past whenever this gets fixed. It’s the only way to naturally cleanse your liver and kidneys. Also get a humidifier. I’m sorry 😢you’re going through this, we’ve been sick here too and dealing with things and losing sleep-so I understand on every level what your going through sweetie. Please take care of yourself, and try to find friends houses to couch surf if at possible 🙏🏽🙏🏽💕

I have a suggestion- buy an ozone generator ($60-$150). It will kill surface and airborne mold spores. Ozone (at these concentrations ) will kill any living thing. So, you must use it carefully. You must remove all plants from the apartment before using . Also, you will need to set it in the middle of the room, on the floor, preferably a metal surface like a baking sheet, and run it for about one hour. Close all windows and open interior doors. Plug in the ozone generator, set the timer and leave the apartment for at least two hours (1 hr for timer to run and 1 hr for ozone to breakdown). When you return, open all the windows and if you have a fan, set it facing toward a window to encourage clearing out the ozone. There will initially be a strong ozone smell, but it should dissipate quickly after you air out the space. It is a short term solution, but it might help you breathe and live in the space. I would run the ozone generator two or three times a day, setting it in different areas, close to different walls and spaces. In the meantime, find a friend to stay with for a couple of weeks, just to give your system a rest. The ozone generator I use for my books can be purchased for about $70. If you have questions, please let me know, and I will endeavour to answer. Of course, with mold in the walls, the plaster will probably need to be removed and the whole space will need complete mold remediation.

I have read thru all the comments so far so I would not duplicate any comments. However, the overwhelming comments suggest that you move ASAP. Totally agree if you can find a way. One thing that no one has suggested yet, was contacting your Canadian Embassy. They may be able to help with lodging and or getting some agency to help you. I also liked the suggestion about a non profit helping you that deals with housing. I totally agree that you should try to get a company to that fixes mold issues to maybe give you a free estimate on damages and repairs. In the states a company would give you estimate before work. You don't have to do the work, it would just document what needs to be done. Also in the future you could have a hand held device to detect the mold. Right now, there are mold kits to do testing. (you can purchase at hardware stores and at Amazon) For the long term on recovery on funds, etc. I also thought of googling the address and you may find the names of the people who have lived there before. You could ask them if they moved out due to this and if the landlord was aware. Also speak to other residents in the building and in buildings close by. The Embassy also may be able to offer suggestions on legal remedies. If the owners of the building and or the rental agency were aware, due to the laws in France, they may be civil and criminal punishments that may be applied. So sorry this is happening to you. Best Wishes!

Very sorry to hear of your problems. Hope a friend can help you out, even if you're sleeping on a futon or something else that you can make work. Your story is a warning for those who dream of living in Paris. It's a landlords' market meaning you really need to do whatever due diligence you can before taking your next apartment. Has it been lived in recently? Can you speak to the previous occupants? Find out why they left from a trustworthy source if possible. In the meantime, be persistent, wrap yourself in layers when you're in the apartment and open the windows only when necessary. my doc would probably diagnose this as neurotoxemia. I went through something very similar in CA, I ended up abandoning the premises, but it was commercial so it was just a matter of eating my loss. Good luck. If necessary, maybe a lawyer can help if you find one who is sympathetic and affordable. Best wishes.

I have 2 friends here in Berlin who have been struggling for ages with mold in their apartments. What is typical here is that the landlords blame the tenants for not airing on a proper schedule. One of them had to move out permanently and the other is still fighting with the owners while looking for another apartment. His place was completely renovated but on the cheap just before he moved in so of course it looked pristine, but the mold became visible quite soon. I wish you all the best dealing with this horrible situation.

By the way, in my old building there was an apartment with a bad mold problem and the elderly tenant, who had a heart condition, had to move out and they gutted it and had to dry it out and leave it empty for a year or two before they could rent it again. Sadly, it seems like most landlords are unwilling to do the necessary work. There is no quick fix for a serious mold problem and I really feel for you.

My goodness, 50 years ago I lived your story too! Not your apartment but a former maid’s room on the 7th floor of a 19th century building in the over near the Port de Versailles. You are much more clever than I was. I blamed myself. I had always been an allergic person. At home in the US I had suffered from asthma due allergies to fur, dust mites, cotton linters, etc. When the mold bloomed on the walls and ceiling for my maid’s room it didn’t occur to me that it was the mold causing my illness rather than or maybe in addition to the old stuffings on the furnishings provided with the room. I got so sick that I couldn’t lay down at all when in the room. I spent the nights propped upright in the open window which had a Juliette balcony. I stuffed a pillow between my neck and the window jam to keep from falling over the railing. I didn’t want to complain because I was afraid of losing my lodging and even 50 years ago, it was difficult to find a place to live in Paris. At the end of the school year, I moved out to the suburbs into a newer build with scarce furnishings and was able to sleep again. My symptoms subsided to a manageable level. While in that rotten maid’s room, I actually feared for my life, the breathing issues were so acute. My advice is for you to move to a newer construction at once, probably in the suburbs, for a longer commute but a better quality of life. The French are not noted for being quick to solve bureaucratic problems. I loved my years in France and feared that making waves with my problems would make me less likable.

I’m almost in tears listening to this. In June 2020 I started getting sick as well. Waking up in the middle the night gasping, days of not being able to breathe right, very low-grade fevers. I also noticed a few black spots on my living room wall(I own and live in a small, two bedroom house). We had it tested, and the wall behind the paint was covered with mold. We had it remediated. My breathing did not get better. We also found mold in my kitchen under the floorboards where we had had a leak years before. It’s been over two years and it’s a lot better, but not gone. We have mold in my basement. I just stay out of there and run the air purifiers until we can remediate that as well. I was constantly taking decongestants, allergy medication, inhalers, steroids. Only lately have I’ve been able to stop the steroids and inhaler. I feel terrible for you. I want to know you know that I did go to allergists and my tests came back negative for mold. But, my doctor told me that you can still get sick/have a reaction to mold, even if you’re not allergic to it.

Since you have that pretty gold mirror, I think you should buy thick, gold carved/“fancy” frames for above your couch and your bed. Every room in small, open spaces should blend. You could also hang a couple/three shelves in your bathroom and in your kitchen. I would also purchase longer shelves for your kitchen to make better use of the space.

So sorry to hear. First let me just say that you r not letting us down!!!Just came back home from Paris on Nov 19th. We have stayed in apt in 15th arr. We have stayed in different apts since we visited the city many times and I believe everything you r saying to be true bout apts in Paris. That being said, I want to tell you that from my experience and also as a health care professional, that what is happening with your health has not only to do with the apartment. It is also pollution outside, which you mentioned. People smoking and gasoline r very toxic and overtime will compromise your organs and make ur immune system weak. Also, there could be psychological reasons believe it or not. Would be great if you can figure out if Paris is indeed the best place for you to live. In some of your other videos you talked bout where you grew up and how much you love nature. I am not trying to talk you out of living in Paris. Rather, maybe consider where it would be healthier for your body and mind. I Love Paris myself a lot and actually have considered before whether I would want to live there. Not after my last visit. If you would like, we can exchange emails and chat some more so I could offer more support, but only if you feel comfortable bout that.

I am going to assume, by this point you have contacted your Landlord and the Agency who you went through to get this apartment. You need to get out of that apartment to save your health, your mental stability and your emotional well being. If you gave no savings as you mentioned in this video. Move in with a friend, get a lawyer and be strong. Even move back home, if that is even possible. Talk to a family friend to give you some clear direction, take the help. We are in Holiday Season and people are naturally slowing down at work and preparing for Family gatherings and events. Be strong and take care of yourself, no blaming anyone, just find a place to live until the City can test the apartment environment for mold. Getting a lawyer to protect your rights is key. Even if you move to a youth hostel, a room in someone’s house, a hotel. You can also go to your Embassy, I don’t know what Country you are from but you need some counseling to get out of this situation. Sending you prayers and energy.

So I agree with all the comments (moving, staying with a friend, getting out of the apt, hiring a company to do an independent air quality test, stop paying rent until this is resolved, etc.). If it is not at all possible to get out of the apartment, and I haven't seen this mentioned, have you considered a respirator for when you need to close your windows? It's not a long-term fix, but could help in the immediate term until you can get things figured out. Could you also leave your windows opened but put a space heater near your bed? I'm just trying to think of things that could provide some temporary relief until you can find a more permanent solution and start getting some answers and people to take action.

What’s really sad it that who ever painted your apartment had to have known that they were painting over mold! That is criminal and very deadly! In the US if mold is found in a house everything stops until the mold is removed.

Hey, I’m a french girl who just discovered your channel! I’m sorry that you’ve been experiencing that in this appartment… I believe that this could come from the mold but watch out for the plants, I saw in your apartment makeover that you have a lot of them in the bedroom/living room area but it’s not good at all to sleep in the same room than plants for the quality of the air

Honey i'am Soooooooooo sorry that you're going through this. What has you're propertiere of the building said about this? Are there other tenants having the same problem with their apartments? If so, the situation should fall onto the proprtiere shoulders. In Paris housing habitation concerns is a VERY slow moving process. Many of the apartments in Paris are very old, and are not up to code. The newer renovated spaces are incredibly expensive and you will really get what you pay for. Is it a possibility for the month of December you can go back home to Canada to spend the holidays and be back in time for the RDV in January? I think that will be your best bet.

If you have mold, I would definitely move your bed a bit away from the wall. Mold will grow on your bedding and your pillows up against the wall, also the sofa if it is touching the wall.

I agree with the gentleman who suggested a mold remediator. The fact that you have black spots on your walls that are growing larger sounds like a severe mold problem. There is probably moisture in the walls. Just covering up with paint won't solve the problem. When I had a mold issue in my basement the first thing the mold company did was to bring in huge fans to dry everything out. It was a big process and I had to have everything cleaned professionally to get rid of the mold spores including tearing down some walls. Your landlord apparently knew about this problem and tried to cover it up with paint. You may have legal action against them. I wish you well.

My mother had a lot of mold in her tiny studio, she bought a few machines ( mecanical not electric) to put the water out of the air on amazon.and now there s almost no more mold. every week she s emptying the bowls and they are full of water from the air( robson aero 360, or any other kind of deshumidificateur d air. They cost 20€.as for the air circulation , i need to open my windows a little bit in the night myself , as it is the problems in most studios, i put a hot bottle in my bed and a very warm blanket.

You need to get out of there asap. Listen to your doctor; the longer you stay the more damage you'll do to your lungs. Stay with a friend or something until you figure out where to go. But you're going to have to eventually find a new place; mold can never be fully remediated.

Would temporarily staying in an affordable hotel be an option for you? It could be an immediate solution for you to start feeling better until things start to progress from the waiting stage that they are currently in. Wishing you the best.

I am so so sorry this happened!! I have dealt with mold before (black mold) and had to do mold testing etc in the states. I know I’m just adding to the comments here, but you really need to leave your apartment as soon as possible. Your longterm health is at stake. Borrow money, if necessary, so you can fight the fight from somewhere safe. Sending prayers!

Go to tenant board,- get mold specialist to inspect apt. Then show landlord paper work from him and say your not paying another cent and move. Mold causes cancer- so get out now- spray furniture once you move and spray with mold spray

Are there any other people in your building that are experiencing the same problems? It sounds like mold for sure, is that why the price was less expensive? Can you stay in an Airbnb for a week and see if you notice any difference? Stay well.

While I don't have the solution for this problem, I do know you need to get out of the apartment for your health! I hope there is some way you will be able to recoup the rent money and money you have had to spend for the doctor and meds and moving expenses! Praying knowledgeable people will appear in your life to help you get through this challenge.

Very practically speaking - I would suggest you (1) get a professional report as to what/ who is causing the damp ; (2) consult an avocat( or if there is a free Citizens’ Advice Bureau - like we have here in the U.K. ) as to what your legal rights are in relation to the damp/ mould problem . Otherwise - you are exacerbating / prolonging the problem by going around in circles ( I am not trying to be critical here - just offering practical advice , if you really want to RESOLVE your problem , efficaciously ) . I know the foregoing does cost money - but , as we are all aware - unfortunately, there are very few “ free rides “ in this World ….

Do you know any other tenants in your building? Maybe you can find out if they are having any issues... If your apartment was vacant for quite a while before you rented it, do you know why?The rental market in Paris is such that a nice apartment in a great location at an affordable price would not normally be vacant for any period of time. I hope you get the assistance you need asap. I also wonder if the problem is something that the landlord covered up do you have any legal recourse to recover financial damages you have suffered as a result of the contaminant & your health?

Please find another temporary place to stay. The longer that you are exposed to black mold the more likely you will have chronic problems. My adult daughter was exposed in the small house that she was renting in CA. She now has lifelong food allergies and severe chemical sensitivities. All your furniture will have mold spores which will need to be addressed or your will simply take the problem to your next home. My daughter had to throw out almost everything that she had that couldn't be effectively cleaned.

Sweetheart would a youth hostel work as a short term solution. I know it’s hard when you are working but it might be the most affordable option. Or could your old university help with accommodation perhaps?

Hing in there I know it is hard but you sound like like a very smart person, Waiting is the worse part because it is happening to you not them. In the meantime spray that wall with bleach water and thet can take or help with the part coming through the paint. Can you find an air purifier that will help but it all is just a bandaid for the real issue. Stay out of the apartment as much as possible I know that is easier said than done. Keep making those calls, if nothing else they will get sick of hearing from you and do something. The landlord should know better. Good luck and keep us posted. Barbara
