You see those comments about parkrun all the time “not in the spirit of it”. If it’s meant to be inclusive why are the ones that go on about inclusivity shaming the faster runners. It reminds me of when you’re very good at your job and you get that one person saying stop working so hard you’re showing the rest of us up. I’ll do me, you do you.
@hugheskevi

In a similar vein, having volunteered quite a lot at parkrun, I find that park-users who complain about others not 'sharing the park' are almost always the worst offenders - their idea of sharing is that everyone else should get well out of their way. One lady once insisted on walking in the centre of a path with her arms out wide, about 300 metres from the start of a parkrun with around 700 runners (I'd told her there would soon be a run coming through - everyone else just takes another path, stands to the side, and a few carry on walking but at the side of the path). Of course, it was all the fault of the runners who weren't sharing the park...
@fsdfgwe

The only difference to running meets is that the time is "officially" measured. So why not run fast and achieve your best time. And quite honestly 90% of parkrunners don't have the "problem" of being fast. In my city the fastest person is usually 22+ minutes. And I have to admit: I'm sorry but I ran a 15:30 there once. I hope I didn't trigger anyone with it, but I thought parkrun was there to get timed. I will exclude myself in the future because I am too fast for the event 😂 At Nick's Instagram reel there were also comments from people who were put off by his fast time. Excuse me? Can't you see the hundreds of other "slow" runners in the background?

I'm a big fan of Nick, and love his videos - but this one did make me a little uncomfortable, and I want to try to explain why.... You can see from the video it's already pretty congested in the middle and at the back. As a middle/back of the pack runner - I find the first few minutes of park run difficult and claustrophobic. I'm constantly being jostled as I, and everyone around me is trying to find their stride. It's already difficult trying to find gaps, overtake people with dogs, children and buggies, whilst trying not to get in other peoples way. To have a very fast runner, deliberately start at the back, then try to blast through - just adds to the chaos. I get the sense that a lot of people in this park run knew Nick, and were happy to let him through - but I would hate for this to catch on. I think it's respectful, where possible, to try to start in roughly the position for the speed you plan to run at - this helps us all to have as unimpeeded run as possible.

Ha ha, Nick! This was superb! I used to do this a few years ago so you brought back some great memories for me. The best I did starting from the back was finishing with a mid 40s placing, which wasn't bad for a 52 year old. The other variant on this which you might like to try, is to give the field a fixed time head start. But do your research on the field so you know how much of a handicap you need to give!

I’m nowhere near as quick as you are, Nick; I’ll typically be top 10 or 20 of 300. Still, from running occasionally with friends further back, I’m always really struck by how completely different the race (sorry, run) feels in the mid-pack compared to the relative freedom up front. Love this style of video. It reminds me of the Red Bull Fox Hunt on the mountain bikes. 🙂

I love this comment. It's great hearing you faster runners recognise this. As a mid to back of the pack runner, I spend the first 5mins or so getting stuck behind and jostled by other runners. Then just as it starts to thin out, and I'm finding my rhythm, we get the "KEEP LEFT" as the speedies come thundering through! But like you say, it should be a run, not a race, so I try not to let it bother me. But somehow it helps knowing you guys (some of you at least!) are aware. Thank you! :)
@ScottishJazzman
@ScottishJazzman 2 месяца назад
@@user-ij9uk8tn8i Absolutely true, I have to recognise it! It’s such a different experience. On my local parkrun there is a 180 turn around the 1km mark, by which point I’m normally sitting in my rhythm somewhere around 10th with all the space I need; when I see my wife (a ~30 min runner) coming the other way, it’s like looking for her at a music festival! As for making the lapped runners keep out of the way, it bothers me if people are feeling intimidated by faster runners. For my part, it’s 100% *my* problem to get around runners I’m lapping. Yes, I appreciate the courtesy of keeping to one side, but I certainly don’t expect it on a parkrun.
@user-ij9uk8tn8i
@user-ij9uk8tn8i 2 месяца назад
@@ScottishJazzmanHahah! Yes. It does get pretty crowded further back. It's nice to hear you don't expect the people you're lapping to move over for you, but I do try to if I can. I can imagine it must be very frustrating if you're really going for it, and the people you are trying to lap are 3-abreast and oblivious. I think, where possible, we should all try to be aware of, and respect each other. (Which, I think, most people do.)

I've had some similar experiences, non deliberately; Hearing the gun go off whilst I'm in the loo, in a race against inferior competition where I followed the correct course and the field made a shortcut (I still won that), and divisionally starting a race in the wrong wave (I won my division, but didn't know). As a displaced sprinter, I get to blow past people who have no answer frequently, perhaps that is the charge that kept me running distance. The fun one is the Bay to Breakers, at the time one of the largest races in the world. Running something like a :56 last 400 vs a mob of people running 6 minute pace, picking them off in gobs, is ridiculous, but a cool feeling.
