It’s funny when runners like this used to do a 25 5k, I know a guy who was sub 20 his first parkrun 5k and now can’t get under 25 minutes and when he’s training himself struggles to break 9 minute miles on average… weight gain and alcohol doesn’t help him though 😂 I thought he would be a brilliant runner but has actually went backwards in a few years. Just shows you.
Ideally I'd like all the stats to be reintroduced, but clearly that's not happening.. As an older runner I do miss the age-graded stats - found them motivational each week, and can't see the logic for dropping them. Great running Nick, looks to me like you were joint 4th rather than 6th. And yes, you're right about slower runners looking out for where they get lapped, that's part of the fun for me!
“Parkrun is not a race it’s a run” nonsense, for me it’s a race against yourself each week also a lot of people walk it not run so I think even calling it a run is off putting for people 😂 yes records should be brought back as it’s a sign of achievement especially for older runners.
Your stride was so smooth and walking us through the entire race makes even more interesting. 14:55 as a seasonal opener ain’t bad at all! I see you doing 13:55 in six months
Looks flat. The same effort would have gotten you closer to 15 minutes at somewhere like Dulwich but the surface makes a difference. By the way, I think I heard you say runners can hold threshold heart rate for between 30 and 45 minutes? The definition of threshold is that it’s the rate or pace that can be held for an hour. 30 mins is critical velocity I think.
Whenever I see the 15 / 16 min runners at Parkrun it always looks so effortless so hearing the effort being made makes me see that its not that easy for them. I've done Winchester before and the problem area is always the bridge with two way traffic. Great video!
Bring back the stats!!! Great running Nick. I was getting serious anxiety watching you having to dodge all the others runners whilst running insanely fast 😱😱 Great result 🔥🔥
In my 350 plus parkruns thus far I'm yet to meet anyone displaying symptoms of trauma as a result of not making it onto the fastest 500 list, not having the most wins or not holding an age category record. If parkrun was never meant to be a race and only a social gathering then why bother timing the event? Why hand out finish position tokens, why have a countdown start? Why can it not be both? Each participant is sent an email informing them of their finishing position and time. Surely this in itself itself is potentially more damaging to this non existent group. Logic follows that if the stats that can only be found by looking for them have been deemed potentially offensive then the results page and email's should also go. Fed up with this sanitisation of competition in the name of inclusvity. Bring back the Stats?
I was so disappointed that they removed the course records and Men’s under 17 and women,s under 20. Even though I run 21 mins, I still love to know how this course be ran by the greatest. They are inspirational for me to follow (just like you are inspiring). Now I did not run parkrun since they removed those records. I go to run solo Parkrun by myself on the Saturday and Sunday noon time. I record my own time, so almost the same feelings but without the crowd .
Great run Nick. Hope they bring back records because that’s what makes me push myself. As a younger runner I love trying to get the records at my local park runs and was really disappointed when they took them all away
It is a race if you want to be, and it's a social if you want it to be. The records should be brought back with age categories, based on people's sex at birth. This seems to be the elephant on the course, and the solution is not to simply shut standard practices down.
Hi nick I thought having your pace and heart rate was really cool but from my viewing perspective (not sure about others!) It would be cool if you could at a stopwatch at the corner so we can see just how fast each split is. Obviously it dosent really matter and I’m still going to watch your videos either way but it’s just a recondition.😊 Thanks nick!!
Well done Nick. Removing the records was a disgrace. Even more so the attitude of HQ in a recent meeting. Basically saying if you don’t like it don’t come. People on the ground at local level superb as ever. Sad to see the direction HQ are going in.
Wow, I started running about 3 months ago and my personal best for 5km is 29:40. It amazes me how effortlessly I see you running. I was wondering, if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I heard that you have to be careful while running so your BPM doesn't stay too high. I saw that you can determine your maximum BPM by using the formula 220 minus your age. Is this true? Can you run at your maximum BPM for up to 5 minutes, or is it dangerous and could it cause a heart attack?
Nick you’ve moved to a great part of the UK, your not to far from my Home Park run of West Moors near Ringwood, I think you need to give our one a Boom shaker lack go, it’s a one route course, you’ll love it, part hard pack trail, the last K tarmac. Hope you can do it one day. DM if you’re interested.
