Wonderfull video! Parrot nutrition is probably a never ending story and perhaps parrot owners need a little encouragement from people like you to do the first steps in changing their birds diet. A welcome side effect for me is to revaluate my own nutrition...

Thank you so much! Sometimes it’s just about starting small, and taking it step by step to improve their diet! I’m trying for my own too, baby steps for me as well 😂

Just for anyone curious about frozen chop and helping the moisture, i add chia seeds, oats, dried flowers and shredded unsweetened coconut and soaked/sprouted seeds. it makes it a lot less wet and mushy for sure.

I am offering frozen chop with freshly ground linseed and now I’m trying chia seeds too (they have omega 3 so that’s great too), I defrost my chop portions in the microwave (just for 20 sec), is the nutritional loss critical? I’ve been told it wasn’t a problem that the nutritional loss is very very low and that the nutrients rich ingredients are still perfectly fine, is that true?
@beaniebaby7075
@beaniebaby7075 Год назад
@@GuyG.KTalesOfAnimals I always take mine out and let them defrost over night in the fridge. In the morning they are still a little icy but that goes away pretty fast. I also portion my chop our in baggies. So it’s easy to just take a baggie out.
@GuyG.KTalesOfAnimals
@GuyG.KTalesOfAnimals Год назад
@@beaniebaby7075mm I wonder if/how I can change that habit without getting a bit unstable in my birdie routine (my daily habits and routine is kind of sensitive to change so I might need a thought out plan lols), it could be really cool because than I can also add in a sprinkle of chia-seed or any other nutritious seeds in the portion baggie/airtight container over night so it is well soaked and alive thanks for the idea Adara!

Defroting in the fridge over night (or on the counter for roughly an hour if you forget to prepare it like me) works well!

Something that almost never failed with my birds was pretending to eat the veggies myself. I would hold their bowl near my mouth and make eating/smacking noises and it always gets their attention and they want to come over and see what I’m enjoying so much 😅

@orianafisher3960 Год назад
@@beaniebaby7075 yes indeed, thanks for sharing your idea, I've actually done this myself, except I haven't been persistent enough are my thoughts. I also have a robotic pet parakeet that perches on the play table and I pretend to share with it, 😂 he is motion activated and tweets and moves his head. Us birdnerds are a special breed🤩
@GuyG.KTalesOfAnimals
@GuyG.KTalesOfAnimals Год назад
@@orianafisher3960 the past I really used social eating to entice my bird to eat his chop, literally took a plate of my food and feed him his meal with my meal, usually my bird will be like “hmm than it is time for us to eat” and he’d happily check his bowl. Try to literally nonchalantly eat with them in the room, take your dis and put your birds bowl in there too. I also heard about people having their bird out while making their food to get them interested (you can even pretend they shouldn’t go into the food so they feel like they want to do it more because it is not allowed hahah) You can also try all the techniques Sophie mentioned, all very efficient! I think veggie kabob (skewer) can be good to offer in a diet conversion process because than whenever your bird wants to nibble on something they’ll go and nibble on the veggies. I also have utilized many diet conversion tools here are few of my faves: -You can make freshly soaked or sprouted seed How? by soaking them in cold water for 12 hours (after soaking for 12 hours you should rinse them in a strainer, than you can either feed just them or give them another 6-12 hours soak to create a sprout!) -You can use binding ingredients like mashed sweet potatoes or mashed boiled egg -you can add linseed powder to give the food a nuttier flavor and keep a fresher texture (bonus, linseed is really healthy, they have a beautiful fatty profile.) -making home made human grade seed mix (I think Sophie has a recipe on her channel) What you do with these tools? Assess what is your birds most favorite one, is it mashy food? Is it crunchy seed? Is it live seed? Is a nutty flavor appealing for them? Than you take this tool and you mix it with the fresh ingredients that your want ti introduce to your bird. Lets say my bird liked fresh live quinoa seed (soaked or sprouted), my bird is usually eating about one tablespoon of food per meal, so I’d take about 2 teaspoons of soaked seed, and add one tablespoon of fresh chop. Few days go pass I see my bird is consistently feeding on the food (producing healthy poop and maintaining weight can be a good indicator for that), the nex day I’d mix only 1 3/4 tsp sprouted seed and 1 1/4 fresh chop Now my bird feeds on that consistently, so in few days of consistent feeding, I’d only mix 1 1/3 tsp of seed on 1 2/3 fresh chop You keep going on forward like that, lets say few weeks passed and my bird is feeding consistently on fresh food, I like the nutritional benefits of sprouted seed, I want to keep them in his diet, so I wouldn’t necessarily ditch them at the end of the process but if I was to feed dry seed or mashed stuff, I’d probably try to reduce them and only give them occasionally/moderately going forward.

I love your videos and what you guys are doing! I am hoping to get a baby bird next year so I am just getting as much information as possible. I was a sceptic on pellets, even some of the good brands out there and if birds really need them? From watching this video it helped me see that birds do not really need pellets to have a nutritious diet. Thank you for everything that you guys do!!

I’m afraid to sprout my own seeds because I don’t want them to get moldy. Instead I buy “Sprouted Bites” from Christine’s Chop Shop because I know they are healthy for birds and my one cockatiel loves them. I have grown my own micro greens before though. It’s important to note too that we may not always have a good variety of veggies available for our birds. I feed them whatever I happen to have in the house. It’s interesting to hear that Jason doesn’t think pasta is healthy for birds since so many people seem to feed it to their birds especially the larger ones. I thought about feeding it to my cockatiels before but never tried it and I’m glad I didn’t! I’m curious to know what Jamie and Jason think of birdie bread. I thought about making it for my cockatiels but haven’t yet since I’m not sure if they’d like it (they didn’t want to try the banana bread I made once lol) but maybe birdie bread is different than our bread?
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie Год назад
Sprouting is super easy once you get the hang of it! I often eat them too 😊 pasta definitely isn’t healthy for birds - unfortunately a lot of people feed things that are unhealthy! I only recommend Birdie bread for diet conversion or during moulting as it doesn’t need to be part of the main diet 😊 And Christine’s Chop Shop is fab!

@@BirdNerdSophie yes it’s crazy how many people share their meals with their birds (pizza, chicken, French fries, etc.). One person even asked if they could eat bacon lol. Someone said cheese is their bird’s favorite food and I commented that I would never give my birds cheese lol but they like popcorn, crackers, and almonds! They must think I’m super strict.

Off topic question, but me and my family were gone on vacation, when we arrived back my cockatiel was missing many primary flight feathers from his right wing. My first thought was that he was molting, but he is a 1.5 year old cockatiel and in the post molting processes he hasn’t lost this many primary flight feathers. He is not stressed or seemingly in any pain, I’m not sure if we should take him to our vet or not.
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie Год назад
Hey! Normally from a moult, you will see equal feathers missing from each wing. Lots of feathers missing from one wing usually means they have had a night fright and panicked, leading to the dropping of lots of feathers.

The way I get my cockatiels to eat fresh veggies is by cutting them into tiny pieces and mixing it in with their seeds and pellets. I also hand feed veggies which works well too (sometimes I sprinkle millet on them or roll ground veggies into millet seed to entice them). I’ve heard that birds are supposed to have 90% pellets from some sources too but this just didn’t seem right to me either. I’m surprised that’s what’s being taught to vets though.

Hey really like your videos I bought a cockatiel in December of 2022 he’s very friendly thanks to your videos, roughly how long until they start to get a bit more talkative and do all cockatiels dance or is it just based on the personality of the bird? Any help would be appreciated Thankyou.
