This is a Zenoah G270RC cylinder that I machined for a billet high compression(15:1) head kit along with machining off the upper cylinder fins for the lower part of a DS heat sink sleeve normally used to convert watercooled Zenoah/CY cylinder into advanced cooling air cooled cylinders. Even though the cylinder is perfectly usable at this point, I'm still not finished with it. So be sure to look for the 2nd part of this Zenoah top-end build!

I have been a CNC and manual machinist for all of my adult life, over 35 years now, (and have been building TS reed cases engines, and winning, for over 15 years now), and I have to say, you have turned your drill press into a light duty mill. One problem you may have though is "heat sinking" , (what a overly hot engine is called, as it loses power). The Sikk toys/CY 29cc RC kits had this problem because the head dome did not interface the head shell very well, (has air gaps). The air gaps between the cylinder and the fins will not transfer the heat as well as it could to the fins, so the engine over heats and loses power after a few min of running. Higher compression makes the problem worse, as it generates more power/heat. I once did a interview for a little job machine shop, and he had me cut a morris tapper on a manual lathe. He knew the taper was cut correctly when he slid a larger morris taper adapter on the hot freshly cut steel, (cut with HSS tool, puts more heat into the part than with carbide cutting tools), and the adapter instantly got hot. He told me it was a good taper because if it was not, it would not have had that "instant heat transfer". The same principle applies here directly. Still, I am pretty impressed at what you can do with a drill press. Like I always say, "There is more than one way to mill a cat." :) Doug @ ESP (Earth Surfer Products)

Thanks! The best way to solve the cylinder-to-cooling fin heat transfer is using thermal conductive paste for filling in the small gaps.

I had a trevor simpson built team GSS racing TS built G2DRC hybrid 1st gen TS reed motor with MSD (I ran HPI) ignition setup, built for the 2001 IGPA Goped World Finals in Las Vegas. ;) Usually fitting a cylinder for a head kit is done by parting it off with a metal lathe. Your hack saw and drill press/dremel/sand paper method is awesome. My TS G2DRc had some epoxy going on as well. #2StrokeMafia

when lapping a surface to make it flat it is best to use a figure eight pattern. I am sure you will get good results.

Question: Is that bolt that you drilled and tapped a hole for, is that to snug the heatsink to the cylinder? I would have thought this would not so good for total contact if it was not interference fit, and it would not transfer heat efficiently from the cylinder to the heatsink? I would have thought the tolerances would have been so tight that the heatsink would be heated, while the cylinder frozen, and then quickly tapped on so get the best contact surface? Am I missing something here>?

where can i find the bearing and collar you used inside the bore to keep it aligned?
@TheNoisePolluter
@TheNoisePolluter 4 года назад
Just search ebay for a bearing with an outer diameter the same as cylinder bore.

Great vid man 👍 , if someone wanted this done to there motor for there Baja 5b how much would you charge ?

I would love to have custom cylinder services available, but it would be more trouble and time consuming for a reasonable cost.

I just got a new zen290rc im looking for a headkit for it. Do you happen to have any you would be down to sell or know anyone selling a TS 4 bolt rc head kit. Great work btw man! I got a cy29rc w the 15:1 comp headkit but it has sealing issues. Was gonna do the 8bolt mod for the dome figured that may help instead of the 4 bolts holding the dome down yaknow..

Use the ADA G290RC head kit with the red Loctite 518 gasket sealer on the copper gasket...You just rub some sealer between your thumb & index finger and dab the copper head gasket leaving red finger prints all around it(safe amount needed) and that'll carmelize and seal everything tight.

@@TheNoisePolluter well unfortunately ADA doesn’t have any of the 290 headkits in stock i was already trying to do that im all set with the cy29. Gonna have to try and find a headkit preowned. Thanks for the tip

I have RC boat motors with this engine can these go on the boat motors in have water cooling please comment back thank you very much
@TheNoisePolluter
@TheNoisePolluter 3 года назад
Do you mean puting and air cooled top-end for use in an RC boat or a reed ported watercooled top-end? Because, a reed ported air cooled engine will over heat in a boat.

Mark Francom The compression ratio is 15:1
