Welcome to our Jeep to RV Toad (Dingy) Conversion Series. There a 6 videos in this series.
Part 1: Base Plate Installation… Currie Enterprises Base Plate.
By far this is the best Base Plate we found for the Jeep JK model line. Most of the Base Plates we found for Jeep, do nothing for the appearance and look out of place, in our opinion. This one in not only one of the cheapest priced one we found but it will also double as a skid plate if necessary.

Thanks so much! We are currently on our first trip (42 days and 3,000mi)!!! I ordered and installed the exact system you listed below. The towbar is a new version but the same type of hookups. It took me a total of 8 hours in 3 days. I only had a friend help hold the baseplate and guide me putting the cables thru the firewall. The rest I did alone in an RV storage yard. I just put the brake cable thru the bumper using a threaded rod. PS...lesson learned, follow your instructions, "DON'T" make right angle turns with the brake cable! Ouch...that lesson hurt!

I've got to thank you for this whole series but most importantly, you answered my main question about how to hook the Ready Brute Elite Tow Bar to the Jeep!!! I can't believe that nowhere on the NSA website does it explain what else is needed, (other than vague references to Demco & Blue Ox). The Rock Jock base plate is the best fit, most economical, and - despite your claim of an "easy" installation - now that I've gotten it installed, I'm glad I chose this option. Tomorrow I'll be adding the Ready Brute brake line and the Break Away Device. The Brake-Lite Relay Kit should be here in a day or so, along with the Hopkins Wiring kit & accessories. I'm also happy to inform you that the RJ Base Plate now comes with a generic clevises, I just had to purchase longer hitch pins than what came with the Ready Brute Elite. Thanks for the tutorials and sharing so much of your time and experience!!!

It looks like this base plate is for the JK's. Have you seen any installation videos for the JL. They have a plate for a plastic or steel bumper.

Hello and thanks for the video and information. I purchased the Currie base plate and have installed it. It went on my 2016 Wrangler with no problems. I received clevises with the Currie base plate and would like to know why you did not use them. I am ordering the Hercules tow bar with the ready brake and plan on using the clevises that came with the base plate.

Hi, we didn't use them because there would not fit on our ReadyBrute tow bar. We order our clevises from NSA, the company that makes the tow bar. 😃

Hey Lewis, thanks for subbing. We don't use a Blue OX tow bar, just the clevis for them. Everything we used is in the description box below each video in the series for the conversion. 😀

Ours fit the pin fine but the mounting ears were a bit proud on the corners and wouldn't let the clevis go all the way on. I wound up having to grind just a little bit off of the inside corners of the mounting ears to get it to work... about 1/16 of an inch or maybe even less. Once I did that, it worked fine. Pulled about 1000 miles so far. Thanks for the great videos!

Hi, great video, how is the base plate holding up? I have a couple of questions. 1) why did you not use the Current tab and attach that to your tow bar? 2) I have a DEMCO blue ox adapter and had to grid of a radius on the outer tabs in order for it to not bind when flipping it up (to 90 degrees). It still binds at going down at about 20 degrees (Just guessing at the actual angle). I see from your video that your adapter also binds in that it doesn't drop to 90 degrees. I'm wondering if after all this time if there is any evidence the blue ox outer tabs hitting the skid plate?

Thanks. Sorry I am not really understanding your questions. By tab, do you mean Clevis? We changed it because the tow bar was setup for a Demco baseplate and this plate uses Blue OX setup. As for the base plate, it is holding up great. We have put over 20,000 mile pulling the Jeep behind the RV.

Thank you for the video, really nice and learned a lot about the Currie base plate and the installation process. What is the ground clearance to the center of the BlueOX bracket so I can determine if the same base plate would work for me. I hate to use a receiver drop to keep the tow bar leveled. My 2'' receiver on the motorhome is about 23.5'' from the ground.

BTW, I have a 2019 JL Unlimited Sport S with factory plastic bumper, the tires are 245 all terrain. I know that this base plate won't work on my JL hence looking at the part CE-9033JLP from Currie

@@Brian033008 I was going to tell you the base plate won't fit because it was for JK's, when I saw your new comment come in. I just measured and the campground we are in is not very level where the Jeep is parked, but it looks like it is between 17 and 18", so you will probably need a drop hitch. I'm using a 2" drop and have no problems. I'm running 255 on 18" rims.

@WeRmudfun, I think Currie owes you a big one because I never heard about them prior to this video. You did a great job in introducing the company to us and demonstrating the installation on a JK. I called them, unfortunately, they don't have any measurements in terms of ground clearance of the receiver arms for a JK or JL. You helped in with the measurements as well. THANKS MUCH

This comes straight from their website, "Fits all Wrangler JK standard models (Sahara Sport, Rubicon)" So as long as it's a standard Rubicon, you should be good. 😀

Great videos, purchased and received everything, planning to install this weekend. FYI the blue ox clevis didn't even come close to fitting the base plate, 1/4" off. The base plate did come with two clevises from Currie but they don't look nearly as robust as the blue ox. Unsure what I am going to do. I like the blue ox pieces but I would have to drill the plate to a 3/4" hole to get them to line up. I email Currie and asked what the brackets were rated for. Great videos!

Thank You! Sounds like the plate is off. All I did to mine was run a drill through them, they were just a hair tight and that took care of the problem. Hopefully they will correct the problem or have a solution. If they don't get back to you today, try calling them tomorrow. Good Luck! :)

Put the base plate on and ran a the break cable, took 1.5 hours. Today I am 3d printing a piece to use where you used the plastic spacer at the 55 degree angle. Still unsure what to do about the clevis, I realized after I posted that the clevis that comes with the Currie base plate doesn't fit my Ready Brute. Looks like I will have to make the blue ox ones work.

I am 99% done. I need to put a quick disconnect on the battery and paint the tow bar, I had to grind it down pretty good for my blue ox clevis to fit. I ended up not needing to make an angled piece, I was able to get it straight without a custom piece. I would not have done this project if it was not for these amazing videos! I have a 2013 Wrangler, I know your videos are not meant to be instructions but I followed them to a T and everything worked perfectly. Thank you very much! Love the sense of humor and the editing. You guys rock!

I am looking for a 2015-2018 Jeep Wrangler 4 door to use as a tow vehicle. I am confused about JK vs JL jeeps and which models this plate would work on. Any suggestion on what I should be looking for in a new Jeep that allow me to use this Currie plate? Thank you.

The mounting plate for the Jeep JK will not fit on the Jeep JL. In 2018 Jeep made both a JK and a JL. Be sure to know which one you are getting. We can only speak for the JK version. 😀

Ours is fine. Some people had to run a drill through to get off burrs. If it is too far off notify the company, their website says it fit Blue OX, (Blue Ox® - Ascent, Avail, Alpha and Acclaim).

@@WeRmudfun Same experience here, ordered Blue Ox Clevis with a new ReadyBrute Elite II Towbar and the pins are 1/16th to big for the RockJock. The pins are painted or powdercoated, didn't you have stainless ones in your video ? Would rather get new pins than grind the paing/powdercoat off with a drill bit. Great videos though, copied your entire set up !

Hey Chuck, first off thanks for the very detailed vid on installing the Currie baseplate, we are freshly retired and are about to start on our RVing chapter. We would like to install the same baseplate on our 2010 Jeep Wrangler ( 2door). We have purchased a Demo towbar ( Excalibur 11 9511009) which has a 10,000 lb towing capacity. My question is will my clevises which are 5/8 of an inch wide fit into the Currie baseplate or will I need to modify or replace them with something different? Thanks for your time.......... Hi John. Cheryl and I just came back from a 5 1/2 week RV FullTime Practice Run and loved it. We can't wait for spring to get here to start full timing! All those videos are on our new RV and Jeep RU-vid Channel... ru-vid.com To answer your question, the Demco clevise I showed at timestamp 6:49 is also 5/8" and it didn't fit. I would imagine it would have to be modified a bit. It's a great base plate, we love ours. Good Luck, maybe we'll see you guys on the road someday.

Hello - great video! Inspired me to give it a go. I'm finding I am unable to get the back of the plate flush to the cross-member; I've got maybe an eighth of an inch gap. I did indeed cut off the vertical frame beam hangover; it is flush to the cross-member. Even if I loosen all of the top bolts first, still can't get it flush. The front edge of the tow plate is wedged under the stock plastic bumper, and this won't allow me any play on the front edge. Any ideas? Anyone else have a similar issue? Is it a big deal if I leave it with that small gap? I'm installing on a 2014 JK Sport Willys. Thanks for any tips!

Sorry to hear you are having an issue. Not really sure what you are referring to as far as wedged under the bumper. I just went and looked at ours. The front edge, with the 6 bolts, mounts flush to the metal beam that the plastic part of the bumper is attached to, it would not call it wedged at all. I believe both front bumpers should be the same. Is there a gap around the bolts on the rear. My ends in the rear have a small gap, but flush where the bolts are. We are full time now, towing over 10K miles without issue. Good Luck 😀

Chuck How do you keep the steering wheel unlocked on your Jeep without running the battery down? My 07 Wrangler X the first position is accessory. I have no key position that dose not power the jeep up in some fashion.

Hey John. Our steering wheel doesn't have a lock on it, so it is not an issue. It should tell you in the owners manual for your Jeep what is required to tow your year. Why Jeep used steering wheel locks for some years and not others seems weird. Our 2001 we used to tow didn't have steering lock either. 😀 🙄

@@WeRmudfun Chuck, Thank you for getting back to me. Believe it or not the manual tells you to leave the key on, but that won't work on a long haul. I'm either going to disable the locking pin or come up with something to disable accessory power which would probably dump all the radio presets if not more. Still to cold in MA to be messing around with the Wrangler. When I get to it I'll let you know my fix.

First off- THANK YOU for this series. I’m “challenged” to say the least when it comes to anything mechanical so this series was a lifesaver. Quick question though, has anyone else commented on how incredibly tight fitting the blue ox clevis is on the Currie baseplate?? I had to grind down the baseplate a bit just so it’d fit. And when I arrived at our destination I couldn’t even take the clevises out without taking them off the tow bar first. I have the Ready Brute Elite and the same baseplate as in the series. Has anyone found a better clevis for the RBE/Currie combo?

Thank you for your comment! :) Others have commented about the fit. When we got ours the hole was off ever so slightly. We just ran a drill bit through it to clean it up and it was fine.

Outstanding job with the video series, as luck would have it my RV and Wrangler are about the same as yours. Hopefully you have received the credit for all the stuff I ordered. I ordered all the same things in your description. The question I have is, the BlueOx Clevis does not quite fit the base plate holes. The diameter of pin that would lock into the base plate is too thick. Did you have drill the holes on the base plate larger to accommodate BlueOx pins? And as others have said, Thank you for awesome video instructions.

Thank you, we are glad you enjoyed the series. The passenger side clevis fit fine, the drivers side was a little tight, so I did run a drill through it. All the drill bit did was basically just take off the paint inside the hole, then it fit just fine. :)

Nice job you guys did great. I do have a question. I have always wondered. Do cars that get towed still get miles on their odometers?

Thanks. :) Our Jeeps do not track the mileage because the odometer is electronic and requires the key to be turned on to work. Vehicles, including some Jeeps, with locking steering wheels need to have the key in the on position to be towed. Our Jeeps don't have a steering lock, so the key doesn't need to be in the Jeep at all. :)

We have heard some people are getting the base plate and the holes are off a bit and they are drilling them to make it work. We ran a drill through ours just to clean up the over spray on the paint. Other than that everything was fine with ours. 😀

Chuck you and your wife have made some great videos on installing the Ready Brute Elite tow bar. We have decided to go with the very same setup as you have. In reviewing the video on installing the base plate could a guy go ahead and drill the holes for the cable and also the electrical power feed on a work bench. Prior to mounting it. Might be a bit easier on my old bones. Also I wanted to thank you for your service to our great nation. I also served in the AF for 21 yrs. My marine friends here tell me that was just summer camp. Haha

We had to grind the Currie Rock base plate(arms that stick out) for the Blue Ox Clevis to fit correctly.

The only issue we had was with the holes. Just ran a drill through them to clean up the blurs.

Was thinking of going with the Jeep Patriot as a tow vehicle. Apparently the renegade is not 4 down towable. Will this work on the Patriot?

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have another question please, what is the total weight that this plate can tow? We found the base plate in Amazon but doesn't specify the weight that it can tow. Our motor home can only pull 5,000 lbs maximum. Also what kind of harness and tow bars you can recommended for this base plate? Thanks

No base plate I have seen mentions the weigh it can tow. It doesn't tow, it get towed. :) This plate is only made for the Jeep Wrangler JK. All base plate are vehicle specific, they are made for that vehicle to be towed safely. JK's come in under 5000 pounds from the factory, if you added a lot of things to yours and are concerned, then go have it weighed. Everything that we are going to add to the Jeep to be able to tow it behind the RV is listed in the description box below the video along with links to them. Towbar, wiring harness, brake setup...ect

Hi, thank you for a great series Jeep to RV Toad Conversion! I'm try to put together an order to tow my 2011 JK. Don't the extra cable and breakaway device come with the RB-9050 tow bar?

Except 500 lbs. more on a 4-down Toad is nothing like adding 500 lbs. to a trailer. Due to the fact that there is zero tongue weight on a Toad, you are dealing much more with “rolling resistance”. Sure, 500 lbs. will add a tiny amount of rolling resistance but not as much as say Mud Terrain tires vs. All-Terrain tires.
