Ive played christian music for over 30 years. People in church dont really care about tone Only the sound guy comes and compliments me. But i give my best performance to the Lord..
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
As you should. And your best performance should include squeezing the best tone out of the gear you’ve been blessed with, as it adds to a healthy worship experience. Here’s a thought: If your tone was absolutely terrible, I bet the congregation would care. Haha. 😂😜
@GuitarforHISGlory

If you ever want to hear my story about how a very real God saved me from a destructive life, I'd love to share it with you. Romans 5:8 says, "But God demonstrates his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." We don't clean ourselves up and then come to God. He comes to us the way we are, through faith in Jesus. He saves us from our sins and gives us the free gift of eternal life. That's what it's all about, brother.

I get what you are saying, but I do believe they care about it. I've found that the average listener doesn't really know what it is that they are hearing in terms of technical language. People will often describe our worship performances at my church by using generic statements like "the band was too loud," or "something felt weird," for negative feedback, and "the band was tight," or "the service felt great today" for compliments. I've learned that when the audience says something is too loud, what they really mean is it sounded like crap a lot of times and too many high frequencies were coming through the house from cymbols, guitars, etc..
@markbrooks7257
@markbrooks7257 6 лет назад
Man from Atlantis Most average people in the congregation (or even people in general) aren't really listening for guitar tone. But they DO feel and react when the sound fits in, emphasizes the right parts, and brings them into the music. Basically, if people are NOT grimacing or distracted, but are being drawn into more worship then have no fear; you are winning. The last few compliments I've received from non-musicians were like "Man, I saw you playing bass on Sunday, worship was awesome!" They literally and honestly don't even know which instrument is which lol.

I find that mixing the neck pickup as foundation tone and then, in live set, using tone knob to adjust bridge brightness, gives a guitarist more tone options in a live set. You can always take away brightness, but you cannot always add bass. There are definitely more moving parts this way and it requires a trained ear, but being able to fill those open sonic pockets on the fly is soooo rewarding and beneficial to the overall experience.
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
Great advice! This used to be my approach when I was using more neck pickup. Over the last two years or so, I use bridge pickup 90% of the time, it seems. Nonetheless, this is a great point for folks looking to preserve a great neck pickup tone. Thank you for chiming in!

Troy, thank you for all the content you put out! It’s always super helpful. I think you’ve got the best weekend warrior setup I’ve seen or heard! I’ve got some nice amps but recently switched to the Helix to avoid the sound man turning my mic off cause my amp is too loud 😂 After watching this video and hearing your base tone, I made some changes to my base tone! The Matchless DC30 profile I was using was great but a little (way) too heavy on the mids. Thanks again for a great video!

Guitar for HIS Glory Definitely a lot thicker and fuller as I added a lot of bass overall. I actually switched to an AC30 as it has better control of the lower end than the Matchless. I A/B’d it against my former base sound and wow, what a difference! Thanks again man.

Great video Troy! I have used a lot of your videos and techniques to build tones for a lot of the new songs we play. You always present things in a straight forward, broken down method that even beginners can use! A couple videos that might help some guys making the transition to playing in church or just playing in front of a large crowd could be a video on in ear monitoring and how your tones will sound in that mix. Another great one would be overcoming stage fright or jitters. Keep doin what you are doing. It’s easy to tell you are putting Him first in your channel, greater things are yet to come! Hebrews 12:29

Hey Troy. Great videos. I'm an experienced Kemper user, but I've picked up several helpful hints from you, so much appreciated. I'm also a weekend warrior. You may already be aware, but you will find this useful if not - section presets can be stored by holding either the 'Effects', 'Stack', or 'Stomps' button down and giving the patch a name. I've found this tremendously useful. I have about 10 of pre-dialed in, intuitively named settings in the 'Effects' section that call up as I'm building my performances for Sunday. It saves a lot of time, and always sounds exactly like I want it to. And its very easy to change mid-set if necessary.
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
Thanks for the kind words. You know, that was one of the first tips I received that made me realize the Kemper's internal effects were easier to use than I first thought; it opened up the door for everything else! Thank you so much. :)

For overdrive pedals to compliment your broken up amp more you should set the volume at slightly past 12 o clock and the gain not too high
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
All depends on the sound you want from an overdrive pedal, right? If you want a more gained out sound, but no volume boost, then I wouldn’t recommend your advice. However, if you want just a touch more gain and volume, then your advice is solid. Again, all depends on what you’re going for!

Hey Troy! I love your videos and how thorough you are about everything! One question, are you still plugging everything into the front of your Kemper or are you using an fx loop? Granted since you’re mainly using Kemper wet effects, is it set to be up front? The reason I ask is because I can never seem to find usable overdrive tones when I have the perfect (for cleanish tone) verb and delay up front. I have to use my amp’s fx loop. Even then it’s too much lol. I want a wet/dry rig someday ideally.
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
Thanks for the kind words, Erik. I hope some of the content has been helpful. I set a delay up front and a lighter mix delay with the same repeats and tap division post stack. The reverb is always post stack, but that's because the Kemper doesn't allow reverb pre stack. But I don't put anything in the effects loops, as it where. Not a fan of that sound at all.

def like the sound you came up with. After years of being in a rock band I am switching over to rocking for the lord. Thinking about what you are saying about how the overdrive should blend in with the amp sound. HW from ToneJunkies says on his overdrive video that ideally one should mess with the rig gain as little as possible. So if I want a more "gainy" amp sound in a rig, I should choose that same amp profiled at the higher gain, instead of turning up the gain. Do you incorporate that thinking in your building of a base tone, particularly where overdrive is concerned?

Troy, I'm returning to church playing after 10 years. Things have really changed. Are you placing all of the FX in front of the amp (I guess on the Kemper no FX Loop and all FX going in front of amp)? I'm using the Line 6 HX FX into a Blackstar 60 watt tube with wet FX going into FX loop. Basically using the 4 cable method. This video as simple as it is, has been the most informative. Hi Troy. When eq'ing your amp/guitar based on your bridge humbucker, what does your treble/mid/bass levels look like? How do you find that balanced tone with your bridge pup?
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
I show them in this video here. It's important to not get caught up on where the EQ settings are, as it's more important to listen for how it sounds. Some amps/digital modelers will behave differently, so me telling you to put mids at noon and bass at 9:00 will do nothing for ya...unless you have a Kemper. :) Do you have a Kemper?

@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
I realized I didn’t reply to this. Sorry about that! For primarily rhythm with very active strumming, I’d normally back down the reverb and delay a bit. Not always, but sometimes. Also make sure you’re considering the delay tap division and whether it’s making things muddier.
@sammydodgers121
@sammydodgers121 4 года назад
I couldn't figure out why the repeats on my delay couldn't be heard properly. So the trick is to increase the high cut on the delay? I've also been using Fender amps for worship but I see the VOX does a better job, the gain on the AC-30 is more suited to worship

What would you recommend? Thanks in advance and love your videos man.

Hi, there! All my videos up to July 2017 were pedalboard straight into Kemper. I liked the way it sounded. :)

I'd really like to connect with you if I could! Possibly message you, I have a lot of questions, just made a switch over to a looper switcher and have noticed my tone is very very different and I'm having a hard time dialing some things in that I liked before I got the looper! If we could connect that would be great! Thanks Troy!

What's the drive you are using. When I try to recreate this sound I always feel like my drive is too spread out and harsh it always sound like I'm playing metallica or acdc.

I’d need to know more about the gear you’re using to help ya. In this video I’m probably using a KOT or Morning Glory. I can’t remember.

@@GuitarforHISGlory Hi I am using a fender mustang modeling amp. In it are fender model amps mostly clean fender amps, ac30, marshall jcm, mesa boggie and a peavy. In addition to it via a software I can add stomp boxes. I can get the non high gain tone but most of the time I get a harsh sound where it won't be appropriate for a worship tone even though some of them are rock sound.

When arranging songs and finding guitar parts for a song do you believe that there is a particular guitar tone for particular song?..if so how do you find "the tone" for the song??I'm really blessed and by your videos..God bless you brother!
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
Just saw that I didn’t reply to this. So sorry! Yes, I believe most “worship bands” have a guitar tone they gravitate toward, so I keep that in mind when building tones. I build a tone for every song we play, and save it within the Kemper.

Thanks for this video Troy! I've come back to it many, many times for reference. A question for you: do you high cut your reverb? I run mine with a 9k high cut and it sometimes sounds too bright. I've messed with moving it around but then it seems to get to dark compared to your video. Even a range would be helpful. 🤔
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
JAC, I don't high cut reverb. In fact, none of my pedals/units have that option. How are you running your amp tone? Bright, dark, in between?
@JC_MTB40

Guitar for HIS Glory I'm using a Matchless amp sim and run it just slightly brighter than you do. This is helpful to know that you don't have a cut.

I always wondered why pressure musicians to copy tone for tone during worship. I use source material sounds to build but I mix between bethel to blues. I love integrating both. Triads for bethel tones and when I go for it on leads I revert to my blues tones just with more bite but the glossy lead tones can go well with another guitar doing the ambient sounds. One gripe I hate that we say we inspire authenticity yet every major worship group literally sounds the same tone wises or very similar. Authenticity is missing. I love bethel I get inspired sometimes by there guitarist and appreciate them. However I have my sound. I find a mix that meets the medium of moment, source material and my own true sound. Don't be afraid to make something your own.

Does your Kemper have stereo or dual amp options? Or are only your reverbs and delays adding the stereo field?

What types of delay and reverb are best to use in worship music?
@GuitarforHISGlory

No rule of thumb there. Common delays include digital, tape, analog, reverse, pattern. Reverbs include plate, hall, room, cloud, bloom.

Instead of EQing the delay would just using a digital delay give a similisr character? Obviously it’s won’t have the Tape characteristic but does it apply the same way?
@GuitarforHISGlory

I'm a little confused by your question. I mean, we always need to shape our delay tone-bright or dark repeats.

I'm the lead guitar at my church and I'm looking for modern, vintage, tone and effects with a pedal/processer that has what I need. But I can't afford $1000+. I have a digitech 335 but want more bang for my buck. Plus I don't wanna spend hundreds and not be happy with it. Any suggestions?

Can you explain some of your delay settings for those of us that don't have a Kemper? It appears from the display that you are using a stacked delay with maybe a quarter note, but there is also some reverse delay in there? Is there any way of pulling out those individual settings? Thanks in advance, and also thank you for your contribution to this genre to those of us who are fairly new to these effects.
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
Keith, it's simple really: those are simply options to add a dual delay or mix in reverse delay. In this video, I'm not taking advantage of those options. What you're hearing is a basic dotted eighth delay with no fancy stuff happening. Would a video about delay be helpful?
@keithconville5460

Thanks, I think I can dial in something very similar for a preset. I always think a video explaining something like that would be beneficial. I know there are several out there, but if a single channel could provide all of this type info, it would be great rather than getting several different people explaining it differently. Thanks again!

Hey Troy. I've resourced this video a few times now. I had a couple questions for you.1. Do you have a recomendation for pickups for a telecaster guitar? I feel like my bridge pickup is a little thin sounding at times. I'm also considering putting a bigsby on it because I love trems. Do you have any experience with aftermarket trems?Link to my guitar for reference if it helps. It's a warmer tele by nature. www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/fender-limited-edition-american-standard-rosewood-neck-ash-telecaster#productDetail2. I know you have ( or used to have ) a Duesenberg. I play Doozies but I find the action way too low. It got me curious about how you set up your doozy, and also how you set up your guitars in general?God bless brother!
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
Sir, the pickup in that guitar should be just fine. If you're not into the sound, you may consider that a Tele just isn't the right guitar for you. Concerning setups, I set them up...normal...I guess. Haha. I just eyeball everything and make sure it feels right, is correctly intonated and isn't buzzing like crazy. I don't follow any sort of method. I'm a little odd like that.
