Mike I stumbled on to your channel and am staying! You have a great voice and I think you to be the "Bob Ross" in the art of vintage harley repair. Great videos!
sorry to be off topic but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Bronson Davion i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
great bikes the 08 dyna i own the 09 dyna have serviced the bike myself since brand new it still has alow 14,000 miles on it ...i have be riding over 40 years....my first harley cant fault it...love the care takern in your work mike on the hogs stay up right .....from down under cheers great video
Another great video. You are not the only one to fight that oil filter. I bought one of those fancy catch pans for the oil filter. Went back to the cardboard. It made less of a mess.
Your finesse and demeanour make even something as routine as this a pleasure to watch! You’re a truly skilled and brilliant engineer Mike! Keep the videos coming.
I have a 08 dyna fat bob I do my own maintenance. Your drain pan looks like mine , it’s my wife’s old baking pan I robbed from her. Lol. Keep up the videos I enjoy them. Thanks
The first time I went to do an engine oil change on my 04 dyna I drained the tranny by mistake, and didn’t realize until while adding oil to the engine and it overflowed out of the crank case 😂😂
After working hard all week I would go out to breakfast meet with some of my cronies then I would do service to my bike put a pot off coffee on and have some fun finde a nice spot with shade it's the best therapy a person can have better than it be at a shop waiting I loved my life because then I was a free spirit and I had the buitifule ,mountains to play in Mike thanks for your program Lemay Nelson
Thank You. You know it's all "state of mind" stuff. I can spend an evening wiping my bike down and fondling her. I'm simple, but I know what's important to me.
Love your videos and all your bikes . Closest to a Flathead I have ridden would be my first H-D an 86 sportster 883 . I had a bad wreck ( as if there is a good wreck ) and I remember as bad as the wreck was the engine was still running . Solid engine design .
Good morning Mike, if the engine oil runs out from the drain plug opening at full volume without removing the dipstick, this is letting you know that one or both of the breather valves inside the rocker covers need replacing. SARGE.
Great video bud. I also agree with using a nice clean metal pan. Funny thing is the cornbread my wife made the other day tasted different. She will not be watching this video. 😂
Hi mike. I dont think you mentioned it.? But i like to drain my motor oil with the motor hot or at least warmed up after a quick ride. I find the oil drains out a lot better When its hot. Best regards from GK. Australia. Keep up the good work.
Probably so. I just let it drain for quite a while. The oil has already drained down to its lowest point internally, and I really don't like working on a hot bike. Just two schools of thought. I think we're both right.
I drain the oils one by one. It's easier pouring used oil back into the container that way. There's a huge thread in the center of the primary. I stick the bottle horizontally onto it and let it trickle down. No funnel required, no mess. Easy-peasy.
i have a 2005 dyna and the manual says 26 oz 768ml , i been riding 100 kilometers with that amount but the level is lower than i see in this video, i think i must add more fluid as described, greetings from spain
Mike, are you in the Southern California area? If so, do you still do work on bikes for customers or just friends? My Uncle use to run a shop out of the house in New York but sold his business (service manuals and tools) and now just does work for friends. I'm interested in seeing cam replacement/upgrade on a twin cam 103". I'm in Fallbrook just south of Temecula. Do you know of any solid mechanics in my area that would let me watch without having to pay extra :)? Love the videos Mike, if I was there it would be Mike(cubed), to the third power! God bless.
Thank You. Sorry, I am retired. I try to meet people at the Southern California shows, Long Beach Motorcycle Swap Meet, Hippie Killer Hoedown, Born Free, Chopper Fest, El Camino College.
Pacific Mike all the great ones are! I’ll come by and say hi at Chopperfest this year. Your buddy in Beaumont from American V-Twin is only 50 miles north from me so I would love to go by and see them. I just moved here from the Bay Area and need a new shop. Thank you Mike, I hope to meet you one day. Keep up the awesome videos, they make my day.
I know you have a lot of videos you want to make and what not. But maybe if you have time one day you could do one on how to look over a used bike before buying. Im sure you’d have some great tricks on how to spot a potential issue from a distance
My question is Mike how do you get to the Clank when shifting out of a Harley or is that possible it bugs the heck out of me have a good day brother always enjoy your videos like always.
Well, I run belt primaries on old bikes. On my Shovelhead, I use the standard circulating system it came with. On late model bikes, with "wet primary," I use primary oil in their bikes.
Hi Mike! Can you share what brand and bend of bars are on Camera Mikes Dyna. I feel as though they would work nicely on my 94 Lowrider. Thanks for the great content.
I bought them at the swap meet. I believe they are HD FXWG stainless steel original bars. Not sure exactly what year. They're like an eleven or twelve inch ape.
Good morning Mike hope your family like always are doing great and staying safe and healthy I've got a question for you I've got a 2013 Harley-Davidson Street Bob with the 96 cubic inch motor it had been running great up to the point when I washed it I walked it with a hose on the top side on the bottom I pressure washed it motor also the voltage regulator the day after I washed it a red light come on on the console I did ride it and it was running good except for the red light switch come on and off the next morning I got up and it wouldn't start check the battery out it was low recharged it and it started so I took it to my bike shop these lights were on the check motor light the battery lot was flashing also the little red lights halfway to the bike shop the speedometer went to zero they said it was a key switch after replacing the key switch it's still done the same thing I told them about washing it the start with they said it didn't have it nothing to do with it now they're saying that's probably is what do you think remember I power-washed the voltage regulator thanks buddy always enjoy your videos
Hey Mike, I’ve got a 2007 FXST that has the same cast aluminum primary cover. Any tips for cleaning the cover? Mine’s got a lot of road grime and some stains from who knows what. Would it be worth the elbow grease? Or would it be better to replace? Awesome channel! Just subscribed! -Ant
Thank you. It's your time. You have to figure what it's worth. I'd probably sand it down with finer and finer sandpaper until it was slick and my hands hurt. Then I'd polish it out on a buffing wheel. Then, I'd probably swear to never do it again.
I don't usually talk up specific brands. You service manual for your bike gives the intervals. The only differences I suggest are just modern lubricants. I don't advertise this stuff.
Hi Mike, thank you for all the videos. I really enjoy them. Do you have an opinion on the cam chain tentioner problem Harley has with their twin cam motors? I have a 2002 dresser with 26,000 miles on it, and I don't have any noise. Should I be worried about this issue? Thank you again for all your help. God bless. Bob
The standard thing people do is "upgrade" to the better improved versions of those parts. It's become pretty standard procedure. Your bike doesn't have a lot of miles on it yet, but it seems those original tensioners will wear out and need to be replaced. The improved, hydraulic units are much more desirable. I always hear to replace them around 50 thousand miles. I don't know. I would probably do it earlier.
Be sure you check and see if your final drive belt will be long enough. Also, although not cheap, a 65 tooth rear pulley might be an easier answer too.
Hey mike, I have exactly the same model, my front fender is making noise when I go over some bump or hole, I can’t figure out how to solve. I already remove the fender and drove too see if stop, and it stop it. So do you have any tip? Change suspension oil? Fork brace?
It would just have a tendency to leak, blow seals. Technically, it would probably resist a little, but I don't think you could tell that. Generally, it would make things get messy and blow seals. Okay, I think I'd go clean it up first and go from there.
Hello Mike, I have a 02 Dyna FXDWG. I heard the cam chain tensioner needs replaced at some point. Have you ever heard this or do you a vid showing how to do it?
No, it's a dry sump engine. Under the transmission is a engine oil pan with seperate drain plugs for the engine oil and transmission lubricant. The fluids do not mix of course.
change oil / oil filter replace’em…change primary crankcase fluid replace’em… change tranny fluid replace’em all at SAME time every 4750 miles with synthetic oil as I ride 2007 fxdB!!!
You're not the first one to ask that. But, that doesn't make it less meaningful. You people are what makes it cool. I just babble. If you like it, it's cool. Man, do I appreciate you.
Good morning Mr. Pacific. I know I've rattled your chain for quite some time now about working on twinkies and gotta say, I Love It! I have a 2002 carbed Night Train, as you know because you helped and guided me through so of my modifications including my 3.35" drag style open belt primary, which is still performing marvelously I might add. I know you'll probably get some old school hate for the TC but imho especially the 02 and being carbed, it has the timken bearings in the bottom end, I changed my timing to gear driven when i bumped up to a 95 ci so i don't have to worry about those pesky shoes breaking down along with other upgrades including heads, cams blah blah. Point being, she is a little ripper with a beautiful loping idle at about 975 rpm and personally I believe these engines are the modern day Evo's. Sure they made some mistakes and changes along the way but doesn't every generation have their flaws? It cracks me up when people talk bad about them when in fact they ran the TC for 20 years and I know a couple of folks whom have over 100k on their TC and haven't had to open her up, only basic maintenance. Thanks for bringing twin cams into your channel Mike. I know not everyone is going to love it but you got a huge fan over here in the Northeast who looks forward to seeing your skills and learning from the best. Your channel helps get me through these long cold winters and inspires me to constantly be wrenching on my bike for winter projects. Take care of yourself Mike
Thank you. I keep saying, "There's room for everyone." And yes, hard to believe it, but even my Knucklehead has faults. But, she can't read, so hopefully, no one will tell her I said so. I wish you and everyone up there a nice warm, early, Spring.
