In this video, bartop films a bench top review of the Remington 11-48. Designed by experts, this excellent sporting gun is an inexpensive and capable hunting gun. Based on the Browning A-5 and model 11, this classic shotgun uses an inertia driven semi-automatic action. Here we discuss the features and date code of this particular 16 guage gun including it's poly choke. We talk about its history, demonstrate its operation, break it down and reassemble it and discuss repairs of a recoil spring in a safe, responsible environment. We also give our thoughts on cutting its barrel to make it a tactical weapon. In our next video, we will take it to the range for some shooting and pattern testing.

I recently got a 11-48, 12 guage. The more I research the gun, the happier I am with my purchase.

I got a 20 gauge. I feel the same way and I just took mine apart and wiped it with oil and steel wool to smooth the metal. I just need a replacement stock now and it’ll be perfect.

As an aside on dating the weapon using barrel code stamps, if you check the left side bolster surface of the recoil lug, the number stamped there should be a match to the receiver number, if it is, you have the original barrel for that weapon, if not, you're in the dark as to date of the receiver. And you are missing the friction ring that aids in slowing the rearward march of the barrel at the end of the recoil stroke. It is very important to have one.

This is not an inertia operated gun, it is recoil operated. An inertia operated gun the bolt is the part that moves whereas a recoil operated gun, the barrel move. Benelli invented the inertia action.

@garyK.45ACP 5 лет назад
Correct that it is not an inertia gun. Not correct that Benelli invented inertia guns. Sjorgen had an inertia shotgun patented in 1900, 1903, 1905. The system was used in both rifles and shotguns and was dropped after WW2. Benelli revived the system later. Benelli did NOT "invent" inertia guns. "The Sjögren Inertia Shotgun was a 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun designed by the Swedish inventor Carl Axel Theodor Sjögren, initially manufactured by AB Svenska Vapen- och Ammunitionsfabriken in Sweden and then by Håndvåbenværkstederne Kjöbenhavn in Denmark.[1][2] It used an inertia system later revived by the Italian firm Benelli and today widely used in shotguns. It saw very limited service in World War I by both the allies and the central powers, and service with other armies and resistance groups of the interwar period and World War II. A small number of semi-automatic military rifles in 7.63mm calibre based on the Swedish mauser using the Sjögren system, fed from internal five round magazines, were also built, and tested by potential buyers, but found no market.[1]" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sj%C3%B6gren_shotgun www.nationalgunforum.com/gun-related-pictures/193294-sjoegren-inertial-shotgun.html

Basically, it's a Browning-style long-recoil gun. The old timers often called guns like these "pogo sticks".

Ok. Cutting a barrel down to anything less than 18 inches on a shot gun is completely illegal. Federal law. Three round max capacity is for bird and waterfowl hunting restrictions. Big game has no capacity restrictions. In most states. That’s why we have field guns and big game guns that require a magazine plug to limit ammo capacity to legally use a big game gun for bird or waterfowl hunting.

You're missing the friction ring in the barrel lug. Probably why it broke the spring bushing.

NOT "inertia" operated. Recoil operated. More specifically "short recoil" operation. The A-5 is a LONG recoil operation. In long recoil operation he barrel and bolt move together for the entire function of the action, then the bolt is held rearward as the barrel goes forward. The empty shell is ejected as the barrel goes back into battery and then the bolt is released to chamber a new round. In a SHORT recoil operation the barrel and bolt move together for a short distance, then the barrel stops and the bolt continues rearward, etc. Most locked breech handguns are short recoil operated, as a comparison. There were a few long recoil operated handguns (Frommer Stop is an example). By eliminating the full length barrel travel, Remington could get rid of the "hump back" receiver and make the gun more streamlined. FYI the model 1917, 1919 and M2 .50 caliber machine guns are also short recoil operated, and also designed by John Browning. Recoil operated guns are somewhat susceptible to malfunction with light loads and the recoil spring has to be balanced with the recoil energy of the load. The long recoil A-5 had a bronze braking system built into the recoil assembly which could be adjusted for light or heavy loads. The 11-48 doesn't have this feature. Extra heavy loads will function but will unduly wear the gun. Very light loads, such as 1 oz. loads in 12 ga., may not function the gun. The holes on the receiver were for a receiver sight (peep sight). It was not to be "tactical". It was for use with slugs for deer hunting. Slugs being of the "extra heavy" load variety, I would suggest keeping any use of them to a bare minimum (and may explain the broken spring). The spring that was on the gun is not original and may be from a 16 ga A-5. I would surmise it is someone's way to increase the spring "weight" to allow for the use of slugs. You did the right thing to get a proper spring. The confusion about "inertia" operated guns comes from the fact that in any short recoil operation (shotgun, rifle or handgun) the bolt, slide, etc., continues rearward by it's own inertia imparted by the barrel recoiling into the bolt or slide. True "inertia" driven guns do not have a movable barrel and the inertia is imparted by the front half of a two piece bolt.

These guns were really designed to be hunting guns to be fed standard low-base paper-hull hunting shells. In a 12 gauge, that's 1 and 1/8 ounce loads. Guns like 11-48s, Auto 5s, and the various Savage and Remington Auto 5 clones love that kind of payload. As Randy Wakeman pointed out, give a recoil-op shotgun a low base hunting load and it'll eat them all day.

@@TwoWeekCowboy Depends how the guns are set up. My Browning A-5 Magnum is a "straight pull" bolt action if fed 2-3/4" target loads. My Sweet 16 and Lightweight 20 work great with standard target loads and field loads. (1oz. and 7/8 oz., respectively) One should use the recommended level of loads with a recoil operated gun. One person I know took the "brake" out of an A-5 magnum and VOILA! It worked great with skeet loads...until the buttstock split lengthwise it's entire length. For 2-3/4" chambered guns that is usually target or field loads. Short magnums, slugs and buckshot should be used sparingly and with the brake adjusted according to the manual. Very light target loads may cause malfunctions, depends on the particular load and gun.

@@garyK.45ACP Good observations there. You seem to know what you're talking about. As for me, no high base or magnums in any vintage 2 and 3/4" chambered shotguns. I would rather shoot heavy 2 and 3/4" loads in a modern 3 or 3 and 1/2 inch chambered gun. Just personal preference. No use beating the old gals up, I say.
@garyK.45ACP
@garyK.45ACP 3 года назад
@@TwoWeekCowboy Good practice. No need to beat up your guns. And regular 2-3/4" field/game/target loads are perfectly adequate for almost all bird hunting. I cannot count the quail, pheasant, doves I killed with 3/4 oz. (28 ga.) 7/8 oz. (20ga.), 1 oz. (16 ga.) or 1-1/8 oz. (12 ga) loads over the last 55+ years. I handload shells and use the same load data for target or hunting loads...just change the shot size. For turkeys and ducks (when we could still use lead shot for ducks) I used the old "live pigeon" load, 3-1/4 dr. eq. powder, 1-1/4 oz. #6 shot, which is a "heavy field" load. I never needed anything heavier than that. I bought a 3" Magnum chambered Browning A-5 that I used with steel shot for duck and goose hunting when that got mandated nationwide. It is, by far, the least used of any shotgun I own. All of my other guns get at least some use as target guns, but that one won't work with anything less than a "short magnum" 2-3/4" shell. And I'm not shooting skeet with those! I have never been tempted to buy a 3-1/2" chambered gun.

If you cut one to 16 inches you are making a sbs, which is a felony without a tax stamp. 18 inch minimum on shotguns.

I've got Dad's 11-48 manufactured in February 1952. He used it exclusively into the 1980s, always kept it maintained, but then suddenly it failed to eject on the 2nd or 3rd shot. Gunsmith claimed it was dirty, so he cleaned it. Jamming continued. Dad continued to use it as a single shot, then later got a Weatherby Orion. I cleaned it, oiled it, then shot it the other day, first time to be fired in 35+ years. Jammed on first shot. Empty did not eject, but second shell was released from the magazine, causing a serious jam. Had to be disassembled to remove live rounds. Any ideas on what the problem is?

Does shortening the barrel adversely affect the recoil?
@TwoWeekCowboy
@TwoWeekCowboy 3 года назад
Probably not, but I'd bet you'd get more muzzle rise. One thing that does affect recoil on these guns is how you set that inner friction ring. The gap in that ring needs to be at the bottom or these guns will kick like mules, even when you shoot low-base loads.

for your first time out, you really do not know much about the Remington 11 48 / 48. The sixteen gauge was made in two versions, this is determined by the bolt and slide assembly. 1) version one 2 foot slide and bolt, requires A two piece action spring a head of the spring bushing. 2) version 2 bolt and slide assembly w no feet, and a one piece spring and attached bushing. 16 and 20 gauge bushings are the same. what I can see from your video, when reinstalling the barrel, you did not have the friction ring in the barrel ring support, this is for your recoil operation, without this friction (brass)
@jurgenstroda6338
@jurgenstroda6338 6 лет назад
continued,. correct operation cannot be obtained this is why your bushing was cracked on you recoil spring. remember 16 and 20 gauge 11 48/48 use the same style recoil springs, whether 2 piece or 1 piece recoil spring set ups, the length of these springs and bushings are adjusted, so to make a tight connection on the forearm, when tightening the magazine cap. You really need more updating on your gun video's . buy drilling the dimples out of the sportsman 3 shot series, on the magazine tube, you can make the 3 shot magazines Into the 5 shot.
