This Toro is a really nice walk behind string mower. The wheels are big and allow you to push over lots of terrains. Setup is easy. The cutting is clean and wide. The Briggs and Stratton engine runs smoothly. I really enjoy this model.

These string mowers are awesome. I use mine on a half acre with bedrock bumping up here and there. Neither the mower nor string minds bedrock at all.

My cord came out of the on off switch do you know how to fix. There are 2 wires

I took two screws off and the wires are attached under a switch that I cannot see. When I have a chance, I will take it apart and record the wires. Also, I did a search and found Toro Consumer 144-4844 SWITCH-STOP. The replacement part includes the switch and cable... If you search that part number, should find switches that may work that costs $17 to $40. DIY.

I like this machine but have trouble with grass getting wrapped around the hub shaft. Am I not setting the height correctly?

Why type of grass? I have some Texas Red Yucca plants. Whenever I use the regular weed eater or the Toro String mower, the leaves wind around the shaft. This is because the broad leaves do not cut. It takes a hedger to cut those plants. If your grass will cut, it should not wrap. The grass should shred a bit. You might try getting a harder string. I picked a brand up that was triangular in shape and it cuts well.

I I just got mine but one of the wires are loose. From your video it appears that one of them is connected to the bolt on the back. Is that correct. The other one is in place.

Are you talking about throttle next to the handles? If so, simple tie wrap works. Or are you talking about where it connects to either end? Edited: I looked and the wires near the engine : 1) one wire connects through white plastic connector to wire coming down from top of engine. 2) the other wire connects to the bolt coming up from the red base and through the engine mount. It must have a circle washer connector on the end to fit over the bolt. On top of that connector is a washer, a star lock washer then the nut. Hope that helps.

Great review...is that a brake switch to disengage the engine on the upper handle?

Not really a break. The big handle engages / disengages the string spinner. The little button turns the engine on / off.

Oh, so you can disengage the spinner spindle, clear some debris, etc. without having to restart the engine before continuing?

@bobbyh.7522 it's possible, but I wouldn't. Just as easy to turn off, clear, and one pull start.

Just bought this same one but it gets bogged down by the slightest resistance, I'll fumble with the belt tensioner but it's not looking promising.The grass and weeds get all entangled into the bottom rotating shaft and the bolt is welded on there so it cannot be removed. This is a poor design in my opinion. Do you have any input?

Basically it is a large weed whacker. It will cut dry plants well. Are you cutting green branches, stems? I can cut brown / green stems maybe 1/4 " diameter. For some cactus plants that I hit the long green leaves do wrap and I have to stop to remove. Otherwise, mine doesn't bog down. Can you try it in another area?

I'm thinking of buying one but my old Craftsman gets grass inside the cutter wheel. Does this happen to this model?

If I cut down tall reed grasses, it may wrap around the string hold. I just turn the unit off, and pull them out easily.

@dmacko Ok, so I had to use the trimmer today. I needed to raise the string higher. Then I discovered the grass wrapped around the top of the drum. If that is what you are referring to? If so, my bad, now I see the issue. I used a screwdriver, a needle nose pliers and a grabber. It took me 30 minutes to clean several years of grass. Will this cut through thorny vines and tangled over growth? I know it will do tall grass.

I have cut many stems 1/4" in diameter from bushes, flowers, etc.

I just finished my first ditch and within 30 minutes the belt was slipping after hitting vines. I took it back to tractor supply after owning for about 3 hours. Tall grass maybe, vines NOOO

I use mine on those prickly vines that are the diameter of my fingers. It cuts down woody saplings so long as they aren't too fat.

The Toro trimmer is made for trimming weeds and shrubs. It is not a level lawn mower. It is a "mower model" in the sense you push it rather than support it with arms and shouders.

My dad has the same Toro model. But, he cannot find a carburetor for it?? He's looking up and down the GOOGLE and nothing. The motor is a Briggs and Stratton 104M020270f1. Do you have the same motor?? Any help is appreciated!

@@DrBDIY ... looking at the carburetor on amz, it is plastic. My Dad said his looks metal with 2 screws holding the bowl. Hmmm?? I don't know... ?? Is yours plastic carb?? Or metal with 2 screws holding bowl?

Hi. I contacted a local repair show for Toro / Briggs and Stratton. I asked the lady to look up the Toro 58620 mower trimmer Briggs and Stratton engine carburetor. She gave me part number 594058 and said it would cost about $50 to order. That part number is sold out here: shop.briggsandstratton.com/products/briggs-and-stratton-594058-carburetor It looks like pressed or formed metal, unsure. You can search online for briggs and stratton 594058 carburetor and you will get hits. I suggest you get one with a lot of purchases and high reviews, and one that you can return. Also, keep your old parts. Sometimes the replacement part doesn't included every attached part you might think. I hope this helps!

This is a weed eater on wheels. It will mow cut everything but not chop like a bladed lawn mower. So what is cut with the string mower will look irregular and not smooth.

I whacked down 6 foot pokeberries with mine. Tall, thick weeds have never been a problem, either. Just use a good commercial line and find your pace. It should be able to clear any weeds -- easily.

How does this work on honeysuckle vines and blackberry bushes?

Never tried the trimmer on those bushes. I did try it on primrose jasmine, johnson grass, lantana, oak tree seedlings and other similar plants up to about 1/4 inch in diameter, plus or minus some. The trimmer worked great.

If it's woody and bigger in diameter than your pinky, then maybe it won't. But I've done pokeberries 6 feet high that were far bigger than my thumb, (they aren't woody).

I have a Craftsman 159cc push trimmer very similar to the Toro and it totally obliterates blackberry bushes.

I'd ease into the honeysuckle vines. If none of them have gotten thick, it should be able to cut through them. Mine does the thorny vines up to a half inch or more. It won't do saplings that diameter, though. Best to ease into them and see what happens.

Can this be used to mow a regular home lawn or is it for big brushes?

Usually, a lawn mower has four wheels keeping the blade level. Also lawnmowers chop the grass into small pieces. The Toro String mower is on two wheels and glides on the front, so it is almost level. But, like a weed eater, the string trimmers usually cut instead of chop. I did find that the Toro trimmer did a lot of chopping, but not as evenly sized as a lawn mower. There is also no way to bag a string trimmer cuttings. So, for golf course style mowing, use a lawnmower. If you are okay with something rougher or your cutting area is small, the string trimmer is fine. I used the string trimmer on wild yard areas and it worked fine.

Hmmm. Set the engine on/off switch to the ON position. Pull the recoil-start handle. Should start right up. You did okay with gas, oil and spark plug?
