What did you do with the cam? Did you change it? You never mentioned what you actually did besides check the valves. Mine makes the same exact noise.

It is good idea to change the whole cam It might be possible that the ticking issue comes again As V mentioned about smokes It is also better off checking the source of that smoke In order to have a completely flawless engine
