This video describes how to go about replacing a traditional pendant light fitting with one that does not require one, such as the more modern spotlights.
I wanted to say a massive thank you for this tutorial, my husband and I were flummoxed by the instructions we had with our new light, your video was so clear we managed to replicate it and have a lovely light now, thank you again LJ
Really good video! This and your other video explaining the wiring of the ceiling rose are brilliant for us wannabe electricians. I'm looking forward to seeing your other content. Thanks again!
Have just replaced two ceiling rose light fittings with more up-to-date flush fitting lights. This video and the other one detailing the existing wiring of the ceiling rose were invaluable. I even purchased some clip wiring blocks which made the job easier. Thank you so much for your help.
Thank you so so much. You can imagine my horror after spending an hour hanging the light fixture and wiring it up only for the light to stay on regardless of the switch! Thanks to this vid I know have a working light, wooo! You're my saviour
Thank you so much for this, my girlfriends has been on to me to put up a new light in the dinner room, I’ve put up lights before in the house but none like this lay out. I must of watched this 16 times! Till I felt confident enough to do it, thanks again 😊
Thank you so much for this brilliant video. The husband and I had been struggling to figure out what to do and this had the problem solved within 10 minutes. We were on the brink of calling an electrician out which would have been very costly, but after watching this and a quick trip to screwfix for the connectors we now have lighting upstairs again. Thank you!!
Very useful. I didn't have a clue what all the cables were, and while I still don't quite understand, the video helped me to wire up a new fitting correctly. It was still very fiddly, but it worked. Thanks!
Thanks for this excellent video! This was an ambitious job for me, complicated by no less than 5 mains cables and no leeway in any direction. However, I managed it using this method and 3 x 5 plus 1 x 2 Wagos. You explained the process so clearly and it really gave me confidence.
Very helpful, thanks, had this very situation to deal with (wife brought a new light fitting to replace a ceiling rose). Didn't even realise Wago was a thing! Cheers
Thank you. Exactly the video I required to replace a Ceiling Rose with Ceiling Fan. Many thanks for posting. I have now discovered Wago connectors - what a revelation!
This is so helpful. I have old wiring pre 2004, Also due to positioning, I'm having to view inside the rose upside down so it's a tad complicated. However, this has been extremely helpful not only as regards to 'how to' but also for tools to use.
Brilliant video - thank you very much. Not only a great quality, but you also covered the exact problem that I am facing - what to do with the connectors, if there's not enough room for the whole connector box. Glad I won't be called a "heathen" ;) for simply pushing them connectors into the ceiling!
I have the same wire pattern in my current light, and I plan to replace it but do I need the flex cable or does it depend on the new light fitting? Thanks!
I think I’ve got a old ceiling rose,, I’m not sure about it because it’s got 3 blacks on 1 side and 1 black on its own then it’s got 4 reds then 2 earths,,is there anyway I can send you a picture that you can look at so you could help me out if you could,,thanks buddy
Hi there, would you be able to create a video showing this in reverse? So the spotlight fitting being taken off and pendant fitting put on? Thank you :)
Hi - I have a vintage metal rose but it has no earth. Can i solder an earth wire onto it - or is there some kind of tape which would fix the erath to the inside of the rose? Thanks
Useful video thanks. The grey Wagos you used puzzled me, perhaps they were an older type available when the video was made? In 2022, I would imagine you need instead the transparent Wago 221 series to make good connections with lower cross-section UK lighting cable? The current 222 series look confusingly very similar to the ones you used but are for chunkier mains cable and the latest Wagos seem to have orange clips with less travel.
Thank you for this, after looking at this jumbled mess of wires, and never even hearing of a loop in system until now, I have successfully swapped a pendant light fitting with a loop system, with a lamp, and have bought a shit load of WAGO's for future use! 😁
Can you tell me if this meet regs please? I'm reading elsewhere that the wago connectors need to be in a box, but as you show, I don't have much space available!
Hi I have 2 browns in one then 3 browns in the middle then 3 blues on my ceiling old light fitting I’m wanting to put a pendent light up which one will be the switch wire ?????
I've never changed a light before but I've managed the first few steps of disconnecting the old light and I've put up the first part of the new wiring. However, the new light fixture I have doesn't have anywhere for the earthing wire to go and I cannot find any advice on what I do with it? Can anyone please help /advise? The old light was a 3 way LED which had a hole for each of the wires (blue, brown, green) but the new one only had screws/holes for brown and blue and there's nothing on the instructions.
Hi watched various videos over the last few days about wago connectors and commented on the various videos. My question on each video I watched was can I push the connectors into the gap above my ceiling ? Everyone except yourself says they have to go in the wago junction box. So a little confused. Can u clarify that they can just be pushed into the gap above the ceiling. Thanks
In my modern new build I don’t seem to have an obviously switch live, no marked or sleeved blue cables…I have 2 cables coming in to each rose and both browns have been attached the same terminal and both blues to another…. Then the pendant light wires on the outsides. Great. I want to swap this for a different fitting and remove the rose… I try using wago but obviously I’m not getting the configuration right…. Tried all blue into a 3 way, all brown in a three way and then all earth in a 3 way …. But no deal… I read somewhere one of these will be the permanent live…. 5 hours and lots of combinations later it’s still not working… what am I doing wrong?
You seem to push the connectors into the ceiling hole. Is this correct? Do you not need to put the connectors into a wago box. Also is this method you are using water proof incase of water leak?
Excellent tutorial, I have learned a lot from it, just a couple of questions. You used Wago connectors. The Wago connectors I have are the 221s like yours can these still be pushed back through? For a non qualified person would you recommend taping the loop wires together then the same with the line wires.
I've just followed this to the letter on my stairs and now the loop trips everytime I switch the light off from the up or down switch??? Any help appreciated!
Hi mate i am a new subscriber to your channel, your videos are very well explained for us DIYers and just the sort of projects that we as homeowners would like to do, i dont know if you have done one yet but some ideas for new videos. 1-how to put up an outside light, or security light, garden lights etc 2-how to fit a stand alone photocell for outside lights 3-how to fit a bathroom or kitchen extractor fan with isolator i will leave it for now i dont want to scramble your brain, but keep the videos coming mate, very interesting, regards kevin
Great video but I have a question. My new light is metal and has an earth pre-attached to a screw on the fitting itself Your video does not demonstrate or explain this important issue - is it because the flex earth was joined in the WAGO with the other earths? Would appreciate an answer. Again, great video.
I have a question... how do i do this exact same thing to a kitchen light?... it has the same 3 neutral .. 3 live... 3 earth wire set up as a regular light.... but then i noticed it also had a seperate set of thicker earth, neutral and live wires ..... what do i do with those? Should i just tape them up or do i wago connect them up too?...
Dont worry, i found out that the other set of wires were for the old starter of the old kitchen light.... i just wrapped them up with some electrical tape and then tuck them away... But ill keep this here just for anybody else that wanted to know..
Certainly you should have at least 3 earth connections - 2 for the lighting ring and 1 to the switch. If not, your house wiring has a problem. However, it's possible that your light fitting may be double insulated and may not have an earth connection, in this case it's OK. But carefully check the inside of the light fitting, there may be a separate earthing point that you didn't spot on the casing, in which case you will need to add a separate single wire back to the earthed circuit. Remember, if anything goes wrong with the insulation or a wire comes loose, it's the earthing that will save your life.
