Part III: Hysterectomy Recovery Tips & Pathology Results

Today I’m sharing my total hysterectomy and excision surgery recovery tips and pathology results. After years of ‘dealing’ with painful periods, recurring GI issues, and chronic pain, I recently had a hysterectomy and excision surgery for endometriosis & adenomyosis. Unfortunately, these chronic conditions are still drastically underrepresented in society, but by sharing and being open about this situation I hope you feel less alone. I’m extremely grateful to the friends, family, and medical professionals who have helped/are helping me navigate this process.

I didn’t do much except walk. Didn’t push myself but walked. I was told to not lift over 10 lbs so my partner did a lot. He was amazing. I never took more than Tylenol. I followed my presurgical instructions and remained calm and positive. It was always meant to go well. Yours will too. Positivity really helps.

What you went through 2 years ago represents my current day life! This is Day 3 post-op from my laparoscopic hysterectomy and I’m so glad that my lowest, “down in the dumps” emotions have been validated. The incision pain, the gas pains, THE CONSTIPATION… all of it has me in tears. I’m 53, was in menopause for 2 years and had developed uterine fibroids. I know that this was the best decision for my situation, but I have been second guessing this every second of the day for the past 72 hours. Thank you for taking the time to document this for the rest of us to hear and understand. Thank you for being so true, so honest and helpful. It reminds us that we’re not alone in this journey.

I can't believe they sent you straight home with no overnight stay. I also had to pee three times and each time they had to do an ultrasound to check how much liquid was still in my bladder. You did amazing to go home the very same day.

I can't thank you enough for your videos. I'm mentally preparing myself for my hysterectomy which is coming up in 2 months. I have these moments of just being emotional and ask myself why me? I've been suffering for a long time with fibroids, they've grown like crazy and I need relief. Even though it makes me sad from the thought, I know I'm making the right decision...I want my body back, I want my quality of life back. Thank you for being so transparent about your journey, it's helped me tremendously ❤

Life is so weird! I post menopausal bleeding (I am 70). So I had a D&C a month ago. After the procedure I had horrible gas and constipation and ended up with a UTI. The diagnosis was endometrial cancer. So I had a complete hysterectomy early Monday morning (Jan 16th) Upon waking up in recovery- no pain. Next day again no pain, only some occasional minor discomfort. I took one 600mg ibuprofen the 2nd night after surgery because I figured I still had some anesthetic in my system and that was why I was feeling so good. Third day no pain, but very tired and weak. Slept a lot. My doctor called me with wonderful news-- No sign of cancer outside my uterus!!! Took another nap. This morning, Thursday Jan19, I'm feeling great. All systems are go, I am having quite a few BMs, which I think is good. Bottom line-- Every hysterectomy is going to be different! My heart goes out to this beautiful young woman!

I am SO happy you are on the mend. You are actually a reason why I pushed for more then the birth control option for my symptoms from 3 different gyn’s. When you posted the video on your symptoms I checked off nearly every symptom also. I ✨finally ✨ found a gyn who is listening to me and took my pain serious. I go for my pre op appt on Thursday and get my laparoscopic surgery on jan 12 for endo. So thank you for sharing your story because it’s getting so many of us to push for the help and quality of life we deserve.

Hallelujah! I have searched all through the interwebs for someone to have at least 2 things similar to what I’ve been going through and you’ve just about named them all! I have felt so alone in this journey not to mention sick of hearing the majority of blogs and videos of others saying how great they felt, I really was beginning to think I was an anomaly. Thank you for putting it all out there. I feel a lot better knowing there was someone that went through what I’ve been dealing with these past 5 weeks.

It sounds like being prepared is very important. Your normal is your normal - we are all different! I love how you describe yourself, thank heavens for a sense of humor! In the future when you are better - for GI issues no pooping, I found this OTC called Seed - I learned about it from another RU-vidr and I started it over a month ago and I have been going twice a day no pain no cramping no gas - 1st time in my very long life that I am pooping like a normal person. ( I don't feel comfortable giving the other persons' name openly) Just found your videos a few days ago - but trying to watch them all. When I had my surgery in the dark ages - I felt as if I had been shot - worse pain ever and I had had 4 children. Be gentle with yourself.

I really admire how open and honest you have been throughout this. You can really tell that you're doing it to inform and encourage others. You were very right about how doctors don't tell you everything and how everyone has different experiences. I've never had this surgery, but I underwent 2 total knee replacements at 48 years old. With the first, doc told me it was easy surgery and recovery and within a year I would go for days without remembering I even had it. Bulls**t. When I had my 2nd surgery 5 months later, I wasn't as scared because I thought I knew what to expect--wrong. It was much more painful because they had to remove extra tissue. So each surgery can be totally different for the same person. Worst part is he knew my issues were being caused by rheumatoid arthritis but never told me that's what he suspected. I wasn't diagnosed until the following year. Glad you're doing so well. Best wishes for a happy Christmas!

I have stage three endo as well it’s been a long hard journey . Pain everyday of my life . I had excision in 2020 and months later in horrible pain . I just got hysterectomy 7 days ago removed uterus cervix tubes and right ovary and ALOT of scar tissue . I’m praying this is all I needed and want my life back . I’m having anxiety over any little pain due to thinking it’s back and this won’t work . It’s like chill I’m only 7 days out! I definitely really needed this video. Every thing I see or read is all negative the one constant is hysterectomy isn’t a cure for endo! It didn’t work for me !!! It’s like lord this needs to work for me ! Thank you! I used a step stool not the actual squatty potty because I didnt see a use for the squatty potty once I was all better. Plus I put the step tools in all my bathrooms so $9 for each step stool instead of $30 was a better value for me. The step stool worked the same as the squatty potty. I LOVE IT! Thank You so much! I am three days post radical hysterectomy. Any trepidation I had about this surgery has completely disappeared given what was found in pathology. Today I was informed that pathology found Stage 1 cervical and uterine cancer. It’s such a rare form of reproductive cancer that detecting it during routine annual screenings is nearly impossible. Usually, once it has reached the detectable level during a routine screening, it’s too late and usually stage 4 cancer. I went in expecting one diagnosis only to be told something far more frightening after pathology. While this isn’t an amazing experience physically, I am so grateful that there were clear margins around what was removed and I will probably never have to worry about any reproductive cancers after a year of in-depth testing. I think everyone was shocked at the diagnosis including the surgeon. I knew something wasn’t right and given my family history, a radical hysterectomy was the best course of preventative action for me (age 52 and mother of 7 adult children). Had I put this surgery off, as I am often want to do, I shudder to think what my body would have had to endure if I just let my symptoms go unchecked. Women may not know exactly what is wrong but they definitely are aware when something isn’t quite right with our body. Ladies, listen to your gut instincts. It can literally save your life as it has saved mine. PS….. I am also a Baltimore native… howdy neighbor. I’m glad you’re sharing your experience and progressing in a healthy way.😊

I started having sudden heavy bleeding and clotting/cramping for 2 months daily until I could be worked into seeing my obgyn. Had a hysteroscopy and that’s when the cancer showed up. Saw an oncologist right away and had surgery asap. Had the hysterectomy with laparoscopy / robotic surgery and all went well. Had terrific gas pains afterwards with constipation for 2 weeks. It was horrible but it did get better with Miralax and stool softeners. My post op is next week. Hoping all is well. Thank you for recapping your experience to help others. Also saw the surgery on RU-vid last night. It was amazing and narrated by a wonderful Dr. Have been on short term disability from work and will return in December. Felt emotional after several days from surgery, but attributed that to not having hormones anymore. Last year I gad breast cancer surgery and just found out I cannot take HRT so oh well. Let the fun begin right ? 😢

“Wow god loves you best.” Lol I love this reaction when people say “I had no pain.” This is exactly how I felt when people told me that Moh’s surgery was “no big deal” and then I found it to be the most traumatizing experience of my life. I have now come to terms with the fact that I’m either a big baby, or, as the nurse practitioner who was helping to stitch my nose up said as I was crying “Wow, you have like no pain tolerance. Do you think it’s because you’re a ginger?” Yeah, I’ll tell that to the people who created that hair color from the box I used. One thing I’ve realized is that a doctor or nurse can be great at their job in every other way, but if they say even one weird comment it can leave a bad taste in one’s mouth. I really appreciate your honest and open video about your hysterectomy experience. I’m prone to mood swings from PMDD, so I am now armed with the knowledge that I will probably have a very low mood swing after hysterectomy. And that is definitely something even OBGYNs don’t seem to address, for some reason - the connection between hormones and ladybits and mood. I feel far more informed now!

I have had issues with my cycle since I started when I was 16. Had trouble conceiving and had 2 miscarriages. I knew something was wrong and had to see 6 different ob/gyns to get some answers. They kept brushing things off. So finally at 45 yrs old was diagnosed with endometriosis, pcos. My mom had stage 4 ovarian cancer too. So finally 1 week ago I had a hysterectomy. Didn't imagine the pain I would be in. I had 2 c-sections with my boys. This pain was right up there with that. You helped me prepare for my surgery and I appreciate it. I go back to see my doctor in 2 days. I hope she doesn't check down there. 😮 Any advise you can give me now would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Danielle, I totally relate to your experience. I had a hysterectomy for all of the same reasons in 2018. I hope you are feeling completely well soon. Take care of yourself. I am now looking at pelvic surgery for prolapse probably my fault because I did not follow the rules. So make sure you don’t do stupid shit like me. Good luck and take care.

Why did they schedule u so far out? I’m literally loosing massive peach size clots for the last 9 days and I won’t make to waiting for a surgery 4 weeks out. The Gyno gave me provera to stop the bleeding but it’s not working at all. I’ve been crying everyday. This is horrible and yes they found a 7.2 cm fibroid.

Day 4 post op here and haven't had any problems. For constipation, I kept food LIGHT drinking bone broth, mashed banana and apple sauce the first few days. I took Dulcolax stool softener, miralax osmotic laxative and senna laxative (one dose of each daily). I got a stool for my toilet which is excellent for positioning your colon to poop. Drank lots of water. No constipation here. I finally went on Day 3 and it was a breeze. The toilet stool is a must! For the shoulder pain, I completely avoided lying down. Whenever I reclined on the recliner too far back, that shoulder pain would come. So I slept propped up on blankets and pillows. I used thermal heat patches that last up to 16hrs on each shoulder for the little pain that did come through. I would say I was uncomfortable more than in pain. Your only way out is to go through it, so walk walk walk, pee even if it hurts. The more you do it, the less it hurts. Mantra: this is only temporary

Thanks for the apple sauce tip. I made huge batches in small jars from my own tree recently and am not a big apple sauce eater (in oatmeal, muffins, or cake mostly) but a tiny jar will be one or two servings worth that might move things along.

For the first time I was able to cry and to not feel alone and scared. The pain, especially because of the constipation, has been gruesome. But since today I feel like the very worst may have passes

I’m currently at day 10 post op from my abdominal hysterectomy and clapping for your first poop is so relatable because same! I do have the urge to urinate all the time and then once I’m there it takes a while to come out and it doesn’t fully empty so I have to sit there for a second. The gas pain was terrible! Also my incision hurts so bad sometimes, especially in the evening. It feels heavy and like it’s pulling in every direction. This video was so helpful! I’m glad you’re on the mend!

Thank you for sharing! I’m one month away from having my surgery. I was diagnosed with Severe Endometriosis IV in 2015. At that time I had ablation done to remove the Endo from my uterus, bladder and bowel (which endometriosis attacked and twisted). It was pretty serious. I felt better for about a year and was placed on hormone therapy (birth control). Fast forward to 2017, my Endo returned with a vengeance and hit me hard! 2017-2020 I suffered in silence (crying at night). My abdomen hurt so much and so often that I couldn’t differentiate between GI pain and GYN problems. Most women suffer in silence and continue to hide in the dark shadows of pain. Do not be ashamed to talk about what and how you’re feeling. Endo is real! You’re feelings are real and the pain can be crippling. Talk to a healthcare professional and decide what is BEST for you. Sending everyone Light & love ❤️

As somebody who tried for over 10 years to have children, I know I'm going to mentally be a disaster for a bit after my hysterectomy (cervix, uterus and f-tubes) in July for cervical AIS. But knowing I'm not alone in this helps. Hoping this gets everything and I'm cancer free after the biopsy. At least I have some amazing step-kiddos that I adore, guess this was just my path. Also, you look airbrushed. Girl, I hope I look this good 6 weeks in! :)

You're so right that recovery is not linear. I'm 3.5 weeks post-op from abdominal hysterectomy and it has been a huge challenge. I wouldn't recommend a squatty potty for abdominal hysterectomy, but I am glad it helped you. The constipation issues are real! Broths, water, tea, stool softeners and soft foods have been super helpful.

12 days post surgery here. Found your video through pure desperation and emotional lows at not bouncing back like all the people I researched. The constipation and bowel issues have been the biggest hindrance to my recovery and I completely underestimated how much the gynae side would pale into insignificance from being continually aware of every bowel pain. Im still bleeding/spotting so I was v interested in your info on the vaginal cuff and feel braced for more intervention now. Thank you for an honest overview. Its really helped me to understand that Im really on the right track and that its okay to be tearful and feel “ungrateful” (best word I can find when I feel like I should be elated and relieved) when Im in the midsts of this. You’ve made me realise that 12 days is early days esp as I had a full abdominal incision and adhesions removed. Thank you. That was like a little pep talk from a friend ❤️

Thank you so much for this video! I am 5 weeks out from my hysterectomy surgery and you described probably 95% of what I went through also...I LITERALLY just yesterday told my husband yesterday that before surgery how exhausted I always was and was sleeping my life away and for the first time in years I feel like I want to start doing stuff again and I actually have the energy again. At my first post op appt going over my pathology report and seeing how large my fibroid was and confirming endometriosis and cysts just validated to me that I wasn't crazy or exaggerating how badly I had been feeling for so many years but couldn't explain it. So it felt like a win for me and I gladly took home the repot and pictures . Thank you again for your video and happy healing to us all 🥰❤️

Insightful. Thanks for sharing your experience. I am 11 days post surgery. I can relate to almost all of this except I did not experience really any pain. I had a total (uterus, tubes, cervix) laproscopic hysterectomy and I felt very little pain and only took their pain medications the first 24 hours after surgery. HOWEVER, I had crawl out of your skin and completely unbearable anxiety for lack of a better word. It lasted for about 18 to 20 hours from when I woke up from anesthesia. It was the worst!! Couldn't lay still, couldn't stand up, couldn't rest, couldn't think it out. It was a miracle I could get up to go pee as everything seemed impossible. Weirdest thing ever. When that feeling subsided everything else has been a walk in the park!
