Sailing from a new launch point on the North East corner of the lake headed South to Nakajima in very light winds. After a quick lunch on the shore of Nakajima it was a quick trip home running with the wind back to the start point. Total distance was around 11km. Subtitle on for directors commentary.

Thanks Darren, a real passage across that open water. Those conditions look perfect for "Swallow". Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing your videos. Skerry sailor, here (sprit rig). Looks like Lake Toya is beautiful. Sailing NC and TN lakes, on my end. What wood did you use for the build? Does not look like Okoume. Built from plans, I assume? Nice job. Love the scuppered inwales and what you did with the breasthooks.

Thanks Eric! I used plywood from my local construction supply place. The quality of Japanese plywood is fantastic, no voids! Toya is great, big enough to be exciting but not so big as to be too scary! I think the balanced lug gets a little better performance than the sprit but I’m a little jealous of the ease of switching from sailing to rowing with the sprit.

Looks fantastic. I've been wondering if you need a boat licence for a dinghy or a small boat without an engine in Japan? I read that for boats with less than 2hp motor or/and 3 meters in lenght you don't need a licence but is this 3 meter limit also only for powerboats? I'd be interested sailing with any standard size 14-20ft two person dinghy as a tourist ( I don't live in Japan)

I don’t have a license or registration for Swallow. My understanding of the rules was that either it has an engine or is more than three meters you need one but when I tried to get it registered I was told it wasn’t necessary. Officially Swallow is classed as a canoe.
