Pasture Aeration, Two Month Update

I believe running the aerator will help in the long run. It's just hard to be patient sometimes when you're waiting for the results of your efforts. Thanks for the update & I look forward to seeing how it looks in the March/April time frame. Stay safe.

You need to drag a drag harrow ( the twister bar type) to drag over your pasture ever so often during the winter to bust up the cow piles to help keep down flies and worms, because that is how they over winter as an egg in the manure as it rot it generates heat to prevent the egg from freezing. I have been subsoiling, aerating and ripping my pastures for over 30 years. FYI only.

Another trick someone told me is if you have plenty of round bales to feed is to actually roll the bales out all over the pasture fields then it seeds them all over, just roll them out in strips waste a lot of hay but did seed pasture good

I think you went the right route for improvement . I see a little difference. Overseeding can never hurt. Last year when we planted oat field we took leftover seed and broadcasted it on another small established field and hit it with cultipacker and what a world of difference it made 3 months later.

A cheap way to spread manure piles is a section of fence ( I lucked into some 8 foot chain link from security cage). I traded for 16 feet of it which was the longest piece they had. I had some two inch pipe with 5 inch legs on it that had a plate to anchor it to concrete as a barrier for load being pushed to close to machinery in a factory. I slipped a smaller pipe inside welded and bolted it also I looped the chain link around the pipe and tied it with lots of number nine wire. Or fence brace wire is fine. Then I cut two tall thin trees , cleared the branches and put one in the middle the other on the back and pulled it around the pasture. Works great for spreading cow pies. But doesn't work well in the heavy slop where they been feed a lot or alleys they travel. But the man I got the idea from just used woven wire fence. I use wire cable around the legs to a Clovis on the tractor. Just watch and don't bush hog it. It's cheap and it works.

I tried a field aerator and thought it was ok but not transformational. What I've experienced that is transforming is high intensity cattle grazing where the momentary grazing pressure is sufficient to appear to destroy the plot the cattle were on. This requires moving them more than once a day. And then the land & forage getting a full rest cycle. Rinse and repeat. Takes a while. If you can't do that try drilling cereal rye in the fall and teff/annual rye in the spring. Hope it helps.

I don't think I'm seeing what your seeing yet , of course i missed the plum or walnut trees in the last video... so I'm piss poor at judging thing's!! I really do like that you view from same corner of field tho 👍

Have you considered pasture movement daily, its scarey to a lot of farmers, to change, however great benefits are being documented.

What are those row /lumps all the way down your field

Tyler how big is the pasture and how long do they stay on it. The Aeration will help but it takes sun and rain to make a pasture grow but how long has it been dry out there and that will cause stunted growth also give it time my friend.

Top dressing and a light dressing of seed would work wonders !

You would have seen a huge improvement if you used the right aerator.. Using the right tool for the job is key.

Wish I had the time and equipment to aireate

Do you do any rotational grazing?

You should of spread some fertiliser and over seeder grass seed after aerating

I think it is to early for real visible difference.

Re seeding young plants grow better

When you put out your hay in the big rolls why not unroll it in strips instead of placing the roll in one spot

A disc would have done the same thing

Scattering the manure let's it dry out faster cutting down on flies and other parasites.
