You realize we can have a college game... They keep killing it (ea) we don't need college licenses and we don't need real teams... Just give us create a team and the ability to edit rosters/jerseys/coaches in every aspect with complete control over adding/removing conferences, swapping out teams etc... Even give us division 1 and 2... Maybe 3? Give us the option to run multiple types of playoffs... From 8, 10 or 16 team playoff or do nfl type bracket.... Again the only reason it's not been done us because they don't wanna do generic because it won't bring in as much money... They only care about how much they can extract from your pockets
He's the only show I can watch. The best part is that everyone on his staff (outside of A.J. Hawk) is just a "regular guy." It isn't often I say I'm inspired by a celebrity of any kind -- but Pat is an inspiration. Played the least well-known position in pro football and built a LIFE out of it.
@@moonrock5324 if computer science majors do work other than go to class they can make as much money as they want. And they can have a full academic scholarship too. So what your saying is a good point for athletes getting paid
@@goraptors8172 well props to you for a good career and hackathon victories. These schools shouldn't be screwing you over either, but at least the hackathon is related to your major. The difference with athletes with scholarships compared to other students with scholarships is that athletes have to have a very stressful, strenuous job that has nothing to do with their studies and regularly gets in the way of them taking advantage of their education. Coaches tell them to take easier classes, their schedules are crazy, they travel during the week, etc. Not being paid combined with a far lesser education means that schools take much more than they give. Especially since hardly any go pro and make it back. In d3 where it's for fun and love of the game and no one is getting paid, this is fine. But these guys are making a ton of money for the schools and getting paid in shoes, beats by dre and a dorm room while coaches and admins make millions. That is fucked. Idk what the perfect system is but they can at least stop stopping student athletes from making their own money. That's an obvious first step
It'd probably end up being a system that only benefits the top percent of players that are NFL caliber. I can't see regular college players making much of anything
@@flippisni I think that could be an ok outcome tbh. For some a scholarship and small stipend is a fair payment for their services and they will still be extremely happy. After that it's about opportunity. The best could make huge endorsement money, but anyone can host a camp, make youtube training videos, sign a jersey, etc. And they're not allowed to do any of that now, which is actually pretty evil. Even the idea of allowing or not allowing someone to make money in completely legal ways is not right at all
If they're making real money for the university, absolutely. The college system already rapes people for the price of education, to then profit off what they do during their time at the university is immoral, in my eyes.
@@jordanaaron7455 well here’s the thing. There’s more. There’s healthcare. Dieticians. Weight staff. Gym use for free all day everyday. Housing. I could go on.
@@PrimesLink Alot of those things exist purely as tax deductions for the university. They can't generate revenue technically so reinvest the vast majority of it. I'm sure players would rather be compensated
@@PrimesLink benefits that incentivize them stay come and help them perform at their best to make the university more money. That doesn’t disprove my original point. Having better student athletes also increases school applications and get more paying students in the door.
The problem is that athletics and academics are entangled in the first place, in an ideal world it should all be separated. Sports corrupt the integrity of academics, and universities corrupt the integrity of athletics.
@@CleM-sp3xv yes, I was a college wrestler here in the US, that sport is also similarly situated globally. Most countries do not have their sports entangled with their schools. I could tell you horror stories about the way college athletes get away with academic fraud, and horror stories about how NCAA and individual universities are adversely affecting individual athletes and the integrity of the sports as a whole. I don't imagine that it will change any time soon, but in a perfect world, it would be different.
Pat, I also went to WVU, they offer classes in how to do your taxes (BSN and ACCT), how to properly run social media (Journalism/new media), and Frisbee lol. I know they exist because I took them
The fact that pat legitimately took a frisbee class in college is why I come back every Monday through Friday for the best show on the RU-vid Let’s go boys!!!!!!!!
Let’s not forget that a lot of athletes aren’t even on full scholarship. I played D1 baseball and the 25% scholarship I got was relatively high for a position player. Still paying off the loan at 33. ($4000 per class - out of state tuition)
My girlfriend in college was an athlete and a film major and she couldn’t submit her own short film under her own name to a film festival (an assignment for class) because it would’ve been an NCAA violation.. ridiculous.. I’m in total support of at LEAST letting players use their name/image
College athletes need to get paid, especially people who are bringing in alot of fans and money like when the Watt brothers were on the badgers everyone started buying JJ, Derek and TJ's jerseys and they didn't make any money off of that.
South Park's crack baby basketball episode says volumes about this topic. Eric Carman realizes he. Can get rich off of slaves/student athletes. Everyone is mad at first then he cuts them in and everything is OK.
I think the best way to do it is they get a percentage based off of jersey sales and things that you can actually tied to that specific player. I definitely understand the argument to not just give them a salary because how do you define who gets more and things like that on a college team, So let them make money off of the things their names are tied to
Everyone talks about student athletes getting paid and Pat brought up a good point how colleges spend reckless and say they are in the red. But you'd think a school like bama could use all that playoffs, NC, and bowl game $ to lower it's tuition.
Personally I think for the most promising student athletes the recruitment period should play out alot like free agency in professional sports where the athlete is given a contract offer up front and they get to negotiate but we might not be ready for that conversation
Write them a check the day they enter the draft or graduate. Guys like Tebow, Reggie Bush, Johnny Football, Jimmer Fredette made their schools so much money and should get a piece of it
@@jakeperrotta9065 without writing an entire essay about it ill try to keep it simple. Basically it comes down to the logistics of paying these student athletes. While there is enough money being generated by some football programs to pay for those players, opening up the books to start only paying college football players is asking for a multitude of problems. If they only paid college football players they would be having to deal with lawsuit after lawsuit AND it could potentially bankrupt said college if allocation isnt precisely figured out (given how these schools r currently run i dont trust them to get that part right). I think the easiest solution to this pay/dont pay debate is to just let the student athletes make money on their name.
I agree with your statement but I think they should definitely adjust the scholarships these athletes receive. I had a cousin play football at a P5 school and listening to the work load they go through, if broken down, I doubt it equates to minimum wage that they are being compensated. Most of them couldn’t wait for school to start because it meant the 2 a days would end and their 6am-10pm schedule would shorten up as well.
A music major can make a song/album and get paid, a theater arts major can be cast in a commercial/tv show/movie and get paid, but an athlete cant make money from their own name or image-like doing a local commercial for a car dealership
I believe this would help with the transition to becoming a professional athlete from the financial side as well. Maybe we wouldn't see as many rookies getting into trouble like the situation with Johnny football.
I agree too a point. If a college athlete makes money that's ok but if they do make money they should pay back the cost of their scholarship if they do and that payback should be used for other scholarships to help others students. If they have student loans they should pay that back as well as part of their income.
Thé only argument I have against the name image likeness approach, is that the school à players picks could be directly responsible for the success of their name, image, likeness. Their name, image, likeness with be worth a lot less if it weren’t for the school giving the player a full ride
The only issue is how do you determine the pay of certain athletes. Would it be a flat rate no matter the status of the player or would it be a case by case basis?
Talking about who set the price of these schools, the cheapest out of state college I’ve looked at so far is 30k a semester and this is a school that accepts basically anyone
I understand the want to pay em and I think there should be endorsement deals or other smaller scale, but if you pay football and basketball you have to pay the other 28 varsity sports' athletes and its gonna make it much more difficult for universities to have lots of different quality sports at a single achool
I agree, in football and men's basketball. The other sports don't bring in enough revenue to abandon amateurism. The current system works better for other sports.
NIL is a good bridge to start figuring this thing out. 15 years ago when I was in college athletics (SEC West program, not Bama), I would’ve said no, but the financial impact since then is completely different. A lot of the guys during my time always wore their athletic clothes bc that was all they had, but they were on meal plans so weren’t going hungry. Starting from scratch: each athlete should get a monthly stipend (~$600), 12 month access to dorms/housing, & 10 year post tenure medical coverage for athletic injuries. This should all be pulled from their TV and Conference money first before the school accesses a dime.
I did a paper a couple years ago opposing them getting paid and you’d be surprised what you can find to oppose the argument for student athletes getting paid
I think they should be able to profit off of image and likeness and sign deals with companies. But it’s very difficult to find a way for the university to some athletes and not others. If it’s based off the athlete themselves, the university doesn’t need to be involved at all.
A lot of the complaints I've seen in regards to this subject are basically that it will further divide power 5 and non power 5 schools. I've always thought if you're really great it might be more beneficial to go to a non power 5 school if they do this across the NCAA. Like yes if you go to Alabama you'll get more tv time, but you might not start for 3 years. If you go to Boise State you won't get the tv time, but you'll likely start 4 years and be able to make more money in the long run. It could result in the expansion of the playoffs if top recruits realize going to a non power 5 school and starting 4 years will be more financially beneficial than a power 5 school where you may start 1 year. That's just my take on it anyway. For the record I never paid much attention to this argument until Reggie Bush got stripped of Hiesman for making money in college.
It is a difficult issue trying to figure out how much they should put for each team and how much each player should get. But the allowing players the rights to their name, image, and likeness is so obviously the right first step
Any particular reason the NCAA can't distribute the money evenly among all players? That way colleges aren't actually paying player's, they just won't be getting some of the money they used to.
@@bolbyballinger that’s a good idea and would keep it simple. But I feel like the best players would complain and say they bring in more money than the average or bench players
I think they should get a salary that’s released after. Doesn’t have to be a ton, but 35000-75000 a year put away **edit - that would be on top of the name stuff etc
I believe they should be able to make money off of name and stuff However, any idea of like some type of salary is too much... the top end players will receive high amounts of athletic scholarships and if they put any work at all into achieving academic scholarships, any extra money will come back to them and into their pocket
I think in a way a lot of these top tier athletes do get paid. They get free tutors, classes, and food at very expensive universities. That being said they should be able to have endorsement deals and other business affiliations like that because the ncaa should not be able to control that.
@@lostnemesis Feed themselves properly? I played college football and you were never hungry. You got a free pass to go to the cafeteria any time you wanted to when it was open. I also got a stipend for fun on the weekends. These kids aren't hungry or broke.
I honestly think the best solution is to make these payments public and to have actual companies be able to publicly sponsor some student athlete. Most of the broadcasting and likeliness revenue comes from that, so it would make sense anyway.
They should get paid for their likeness. If a player is good enough to get advertised by a team they should get paid for that. It shouldn’t be a flat salary for all players on a team and it definitely shouldn’t be a way for big budget programs to completely trounce the lower division teams with less money in their program.
The argument is that basketball and football pays for other scholarships in their school and other smaller schools around the country through the NCAA giving money. If they take away that by paying P5 schools it while take away an opportunity for people that don't have the means to get pass a community college.
Honestly not for some of these schools. Football teams bring in 100 of millions of dollars at these top schools. And student athletes could make millions off of their name, same thing as like a student creating a business at school and it popping off. It’s a privilege though to receive a scholarship not disputing that.
If all student athletes got a full ride then yes. And that’s an underrated comment because if the likeness thing got student athletes paid it would only be the top 5% who already have the full ride getting paid as well.
Pat you should just start junior leagues. Recruit high school kids to come after graduation and they can joins the big shows after a year at most, get paid while they play until they make it whether it's one year or 4.
The generated money needs to be looked at. So much from D1 football and basketball goes to pay lower level sports scholarships across the ncaa.. we could have a fund they draw from after they’re done playing in college. Slice up a portion and pay it out after it no longer gives individual competitive advantage. Pay the kids.
college athletes should get paid but the star RB at Alabama should make the same as the relief pitcher at Ball State. If its about providing the kids with sustenance and a stipend it shouldn't matter what dollar amount is associated with their performance. If all of the schools pitched in to the fund it wouldn't be difficult to pay all of the kids in college sports a decent wage, something like 20-25k a year.
I agree with some college pay. A set standard rate, Maybe incentives. But Everyone should makes the same equal amount. And the longer they stay in school, the more they should make. Seniors making most. And why arent players being paid at lease for Bowl wins.
I don't watch the college game because the student athlete is taken advantage of to the profit of the school, et al, while tuitions continue to go up and the student athletes leave without quality educations. Let corporations buy the teams, pay the players as a Minor League, and keep schools entirely out of the picture.
They sign up to play ...and some get scholarships to the most elite schools in the world and don't even take advantage of it and it's not like they're forced against their will... View it as a internship ...
They should be under the marketing department for "employment" purposes for the length of their eligibility and at the conclusion they should be offered a degree of their choice free of charge whether or not they make the NFL.
the best way to actually pay players something like a "paycheck" would just be a flat rate from the NCAA maybe do something where you make more every year idk, and then whatever the players can make on their own thats fine too.
One issue people are forgetting is that if you pay the football and basketball players (the only sports that draw money), you have to pay all of the women too because of Title IX. That football/basketball money pays the travel expenses of all of the other sports. Also, how do you allow paying players without further widening the gap between the big money teams and the others? Not everyone has Notre Dame or Alabama money and you just can't compete with that, especially if they can steal recruits because they pay them more. Not paying players has always been about keeping competitive balance. Theoretically right now, Alabama can't offer you anything that Bowling Green can't. I think a fair compromise is letting players profit from their likeness. I think that's always been illegal since it would just be a front for boosters to pay players. Booster hands you $5000 cash. Illegal. Booster pays $5000 for your autograph. Legal now.
The college football playoff needs to be extended. I’ve pretty much stopped watching altogether because every year, inevitably, it’s gonna be Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, and one other team that squeaks in, and the NCAA will do whatever it takes to keep it that way. It’s boring as hell.
They should pay the players through the video games. Every year it should be voted on by the people of who they specifically select each year to use their exact likeness. The players who aren't selected then the individual schools could accommodate them on a smaller but still beneficial scale. Just a thought Im 34 and grew up playing these games and know how well they would do, Also LET'S GO MOUNTAINEERS!
The term student-athlete was created in order to prevent the nccaa from having to give compensation to the widow of Ray Dennison who died due to a hit he sustained on the field.
If players get paid for their name-image-likeness this will increase the appeal of high wealth areas. Most teams on the coasts will be better off while most teams in the Midwest or South will be worse off. Not saying this makes it not worth it overall, but something to consider.
Depends what you make of it. You can apply to any degree you want! You can apply to Sport Management, Sports Marketing, Business Admin etc. To better understand the business landscape, contracts and amelioration of the industry. Picking BS classes is the athletes fault for not taking full advantage of the opportunity.
I dont necessarily agree with college kids getting paid directly by the school but they definitely should be able to get sponsored and get paid by stuff like that
@@baseupp12 additionally anyone in their right mind would just go to the school that pays the best which entirely gets rid of recruiting and what college football is all about
4:24 if you don’t think this is a big deal, just remember at this point in the video the boys don’t scream “AND BILLIONS” when they would on any other video. Take this seriously, let’s get these kids their dues!
