@@ichoosemysanity6467 I don't know if this is still the case, but back in the old days, there were schools that rescinded scholarships of athletes when they were no longer on the team. I think the initial solution is easy--structure the players compensation the same way some schools structure coach's salaries. Don't pay them for playing the game, but let them make money on all the ancillary deals (endorsements, etc).

the solution is simple: put the athletes on work-study and pay them like any other student who works for the school. this would also make them eligible for workman's comp and obligate the schools to take care of them medically.

That free education line is bullshit. whenever most of these students can't pursue extra curricular activities outside of football they don't have the time to advance their degrees as they would a normal student. Education is a valuable asset but it doesn't take care of the immediate needs most of these college athletes face. many want to support their families and they can't pick up a job because they have no time. Just ask Jalen rose about it. I'm not saying they should be signing contracts and being paid to actually play. But I do advocate that they should collect revenue from Jersey sales and be able to collect money by attending football camps and even speaking if they are invited to do so. And you know what if they're offered money and gifts from boosters. Who the hell cares?

Bull shit they don't have enough time. They could work 2 hrs a day 7 days a week at a $10 an hour work study and make $500 a month. Thats plenty of money to pay for what ever they need to pay for. Its all about time management, but lets face it 18 year old kids suck at time management. So what ever financial issues they find themselves in while in college they got in by their own doing. They practice what 40 hours a week? Shit I know people that work dual jobs 80 hours a week just to pay for school, food, rent, phone, internet, utility (all things most of these athletes don't need to worry about) and still have enough time to study and get good grades in class. So don't try to say they don't have enough time because thats bull shit. 2 hours a day plus lets say 6 hours of practice a day. That leaves 16 hours to study or sleep or do what ever the hell they want to do with those 16 hours. That is plenty of time to study, get an A on that western civ final, and still get a full 8 hours of sleep every single day. Don't have enough time, please. Shit I know guys that finished full college semesters while deployed over seas and you wanna tell me these kids don't have time to study and work 2 measly hours a day on top of practice, what a joke.
@av5957
@av5957 6 лет назад
R Nordy what about travel time to and from practice, to and from work, time that you're getting ready for the day, getting ready for practice, actually attending classes (not just homework and studying) I feel like with all of this considered it would give them about 9 hours left in their day to study and sleep .. if they're taking 12-15 credits that's got to be 2-3 hours of homework and studying nightly. Doesn't leave time for any type of social life either. Almost no time, for anything else.

I had a thought about the statement, "We are paying our student athletes with education." Let's say that you have a job. A job you love, a job that you're great at, but still it's a job, and you want to be paid. Your employer is happy to pay you - in manure. When you ask why they are giving you manure, they explain, "This is just as valuable as money. You can use it to fertilize a field, then plant some seeds, weed and till the land, hope for good weather, and after all that work, reap a fine crop to support your family." The metaphor breaks down in that you can turn around and sell the manure for some kind of financial gain. There is no guarantee that you can "sell" your education. I do not mean to imply by the scenario above that I am of the opinion that all student athletes should be extravagantly paid, or even paid at all. I'm just stating that in almost every situation where I perform a service for an outside party, I would expect my compensation to be something of tangible or financial value. I would even go so far as to say that I think that expectation is shared by a great many people. I'm also not saying that education isn't valuable. Many people see the value in a higher education, and hence, colleges exist. I am saying that education in itself cannot be so easily substituted for actual financial compensation, and that it's somewhat misleading to suggest otherwise.

It doesn't pay for meals they should at least get them a card that is just for Food at least that has a fair amount of money that would help them during the weeks , then when they go on road trips some don't have money and they have to play on a empty stomach or eat off a team mates money because everyone trips over coaches helping players out with money or getting them food , kids don't have a lot when they get to that stage some don't even have a stable house hold to get a reliable source of food

Too few athletes actually make it pro (roughly 2%). If they think this is a realstic career path then that's their mistake. Everybody else is betting on themselves without a guarentee to get a job with their degree, and when they fail they still have to pay the Piper. Athletes should be no exception. Plus they don't have to pay for education, this saves them from $30,000 a year everyone else has to pay. Getting a shot for the pros and a free pass on the cost of college is more than enough of a reward. NOTE: If college was free for all students, then yes I think student athletes should make money on their likeness. Realize it is unfair, yet this is the MOST fair scenario we have available as of yet.

@Michelle Appiah They bring more students to a school. Lets say I am 5'10 185 playing RB and I get 3 yards a carry my team goes 5-7 every year we will only have about 10,000 students at our school and tuition is like 20k a year. There's another RB 6'1 235 his team is 10-2 and his college has 40,000 students many came just to see him play or be near him. Tuition is 30,000 per year there. He brought his school an extra 300 million bucks annually just off FACT of people from 1000 miles away are paying 10 k extra a year to see him play. Also in college he is more likely to catch a false rape charge and doesn't have the money to protect himself it's a fxcking disgrace and 95% he's Black so the false rape allegations are a 20% chance sometimes the athletes do actually do the crime but I am just saying its a bad situation.

None of these college athletes, especially NCAA players, should play at all unless an agreement is met where these athletes receive a piece of these multi-billion dollar industry's pie! Straight up. It's absolutely absurd these kids are plucked from their hometowns to generate massive levels of wealth for these corporations, schools, coaches, etc., when less than 1% of whom ever go pro; and with their great sacrifices, when all is said and done, they go home penniless. There should be a sort of "trust fund" set up for all of these revenue generating players to receive after their college careers are over. The better the team (the ones who generate most by going furthest) the larger the fund. Period.

Speaking from experience. I hardly slept due to field of study I entered and playing soccer at a D1 school. I was a walk on, but I made the first team after my red shirt year. I played for 5 years and all I received was a partial scholarship that would sometimes cover books or meals. I played for what Vance says, "love of the game." I hardly slept due to the playing schedule and the school work I had. These people have no idea of what a student athlete goes through. I had some fellow teammates that struggle a lot as I did to either eat or pay for books. I agree that athletes should get either have their complete schooling played for or pay them.

if the student athletes did receive a good education I can understand not paying them because they have something to fall back on. but they don't get a good education because they are spending all their time playing their respective sport and teachers let them slide on their work and some make up grades and classes so they can play.

1:51 "She does not want us to be paying student athletes". That immediately lost the debate for them. It's THE PLAYERS that are paying THESE COLUMNISTS to talk about college sports. The players fuel college sports, that give columnists things to write about, and now these power-confused individuals think they are entitled to say the people that pay them, shouldn't be paid? This is mind-boggling. Also Christine's fake smile is so infuriating to look at. Her argument against paying student athletes is (paraphrasing): NCAA would have to pay players with market value, worker's compensation, and insurance. [Ok, cool. She's basically stating what Kareem is advocating, to treat NCAA as an ECONOMICALLY modeled professional corporation. She's listing those effects negatively, but it is exactly what the opposing side is proposing. So she doesn't make a logical conclusion here.] "There's not a university president that wants to get into that." So basically she's saying the people that are leeching money off players don't want to do it, so it's completely justified to not pay athletes. OF COURSE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS DON'T WANT TO DO IT. She admits that NCAA is hypocritical yet immediately follows that by stating this is the best system we have? Are you serious? If you think someone is hypocritical, it implies you feel there is a BETTER option to view/handle an issue. You don't say someone is hypocritical, but say "it's ok because it's the best they can do". Either don't call them hypocritical and stay consistent to your claims, or just admit you might not have thought things through completely. And her final point is players need that time to mature for the game in college (claiming athletes aren't all LeBron James). That is a valid point... wait a second... HOW DOES THAT RELATE TO PLAYERS GETTING PAID OR NOT? It doesn't. Players can treasure time in college and still be rightfully paid what they deserve. She goes off topic. The fact she keeps reaching for her coffee, smiling and nodding her head throughout this video just makes me question her credibility and status as a spokesperson for this "debate".
@zackvater7719

Also the college columnist could just write about the pros and if there isnt college its called going highschool to pros. Also players if they are good enough and have enough equity with the team workout deals with the team where the team pays for the players college education when they decide to go back Most players in MLB that are latin or from foreign countries dont even go to college and just get drafted from HS. And if a player is good enough in College (which most arent) the university will keep them on scholarship. Ex. Marcus Lattimore

Most student-athletes tend to come from poorer parts of the country in which their families cannot afford to pay tuition at any division 1 or division 2 school. The kids coming out of these place are looking to make money off of their biggest talent...sports. And at instances they have to choose between continuing their education or foregoing college to enter the draft in search of those millions of dollars to rescue their family. By allowing students to be paid and market themselves freely without any rules you allow the student athlete some motivation to continue at college.

Which will relate to more gang related violence and only 1% of college football players go on to play for NFL. Also what if a student wants to holdout because they want more money. I played baseball for Northern Illinois from 1969 thru 1973. Varsity players back then were paid, not so much with cash (there was pretty good cash for making sure the sprinklers went on and off at the field and a few other "jobs".), but with other perks such as a running charge account to the University at one of the local tailoring shops, free rental cars, and many others at local businesses, especially businesses located on campus. Sports programs were pretty small time at Northern. Back then you were there primarily for an education. I can't imagine what some players at big time schools were getting then or now.

Let's be clear. These big name colleges are not recruiting the students to attend their schools for the educational benefits. They are bringing them in for their athletic talents and are making millions off these kids. You can argue the fact that they are also there to get an education, but put the reality glasses on for just a few minutes. They CANT get educated properly when they have to spend 70% of their time on the football field instead of the classroom or study hall. And these professors are being forced by the universities to pass these players in their classes just to keep them eligible to play! So what type of real education are they receiving? Again, they are there to one reason and one reason only, to play sports. And if the school and the NCAA are gonna make billions off these kids, then at least pay them. Stop saying " the players get paid with a scholarship". At the University of Alabama that scholarship is worth about 60,000 bucks. The school makes millions. Nick Saban makes 10 million. Why isn't he only making 60,000. Why is there no uproar when a coach makes big bucks, but the minute you start talking about giving these athletes the dollars they are creating, people start freaking out. People who are attending these schools on athletic scholarships are there for ONE reason and ONE reason ONLY....to play sports. Most of these kids bearely made through high school academically, but the colleges see an opportunity to make money off their sport talent. And when you attend a college on an athletic scholarship, majority of your time is spent practicing/preparing your craft. Academics is the last thing on the list. Just research the UNC "paper classes" and you'll see how the schools get around that "GPA eligibility" hurdle. And this is common practice in many schools. Pay these athletes and stop with the BS.

jaquan541 No, they'd go broke without education. Sports are worth NOTHING compared to the millions upon millions students bring in for tuition. Let's put aside the debate about who works harder and assume that running 10 miles a week for $100k of free school is REALLY REALLY hard... the profit from this $4 billion industry should go toward alleviating the $43.5 billion in annual tuition payments. By the way, I thought you implied that sports brought in more revenue than education... Which one is a bigger number? $4 or $43.5 billion?

6:10 Schools purposely aim to not turn a profit. The reason for this is as an institution your goal should never be to earn money for yourself its always about the students. It's not good for the schools image if they're making all these millions of dollars profit because then people will want to know where the money is going. It just looks bad for business. So to "hide" all the money they make they immediately spend it on top of the line facilities and arenas, and coaches. Go and look at some these top college locker rooms and training centers. You'll see where that money is going.

Hold on. The athletes ARE paid. They get an education worth 100k-300k-market price. There is risk, students are broke, what else is new? Schools don't know which athletes are going to rise to top-that's 1 out of 100 at best. Schools pay athletes in many sports-the price of tuition, lodging, meals, healthcare, books, tutors, etc. Somebody please fill me in on this point.

College athletes should be paid, or there should at least be a stipend set aside for them. People who attend college on art scholarships or music scholarships are allowed perform for money or get their work featured, yet student athletes are barred from earning money unless they get jobs, which they usually don't have the time for. On top of that, you can't tell me that it's fair when universities, coaches, the NCAA (a "non-profit" organization), broadcasting companies, and a variety of private corporations all profit off of student athletes, yet they go out and train, attend class, perform, risk getting injured (which in some cases may lead to the rescinding of their scholarships) and see no money from it whatsoever. I'm not saying offer them the equivalent of a professional contract, but they deserve something.

This was posted over 8 years ago as im writing. College athletes should not be paid or bribed into joining a school. The student should choose the school that best fits them that will accept them. Also its way less of an achievement to do good in school and perform well for your team. The feeling will never be the same. When they are not getting paid they are way more determined to make it to the next level into the professionals. With the money some of these athletes make, why go pro when you have already made millions? You need to earn the right to make money and in my opinion only the ones that make it to professional should get money for playing.

We just witnessed the issue that this’ll always be an ongoing “discussion” they were all shutting him down or avoiding his points, cause they were aimed towards actually aiming towards fixing it. Kareem is the only person there with his own money, and not company property so he’s the only one trying to discuss issues and making equal If not more significant examples of needed attention. And every single one of those people, went straight into their employees handbook and went into their call center scripts. What I thought was gunna be a discussion was clearly revealed to be more of the very same bs that’s done to keep players without a paycheck. Like the killing of Julius Cesar they all took a stab at him for trying to broadcast issues that are genuinely controversial. They wouldn’t even acknowledge that he had said something that was terribly tragic & somewhat of a whistleblow, but it’s out there, just buried so not brought up or considered. Kareem’s just keeping it real, and it made these people turn into corporate policy robots short circuiting. Trying to defend the gross reality of college football. They in the game for profits, it’s a business so empathy isnt a priority but it’s clearly mentioned that they make sure their players get the full scholarship along with clothing and food plans so they can get be their best on and off the field blah blah blah. bro_mackin those struggles aren't exclusive to athletes. and my point about haven't gone to college or receiving a scholarship is to imply that I am currently a student with a scholarship. one university offered to pay my full tuition plus and extra $5000 each semester to defer the cost of books, housing, etc. so athletes probably get something like that as well. and no I haven't struggled much because I manage my money pretty well, spending only on what I need, and borrowing only when I need to and knowing I can pay it back.

Gator the struggles of an student athlete and a regular student are completely different, being a med student for example offers absolutely no risk of physical injury unlike in amateur sports like football as an example where career ending and sometimes even life altering injurys can occur, what do these atheletes do then. And a lot of schools only offer yearly renewable scholarships so there is no guarantee that you will be compensated for all 4 years, the school may decide to drop a player. Other students also are offered coop paid work terms and are allowed to work atheletes due to their schedule and ncaa rules aren't even allowed to work during the summer. The amount of money the schools make of these individuals including ticket sales and merchandise include player specific items like jerseys, bobble heads, posters etc.. with that said players name and likeness on it, but then their not allowed to recive any money from those sale....ironic. These schools are making millions to sometime billions of dollars of profit of the play and handwork of these athletes and these so called gracious scholarships are a minuscule fraction of whats really being being made. Fans go to see the players perform not the head director of athletics, so pay them or make these people benefiting of the kids to take a pay cut.

I know I’m going to get hate and I personally don’t care but here’s my saying why they shouldn’t get paid. 1. A good chunk of these athletes get some form of scholarship so that should be their form of money while other students who aren’t athletes and don’t get scholarships have to deal with loans for 20 years of their life after college. 2. College sports is like any school sport, it’s an extra curricular activity, it’s not required. 3. Professional sports are jobs, college sports aren’t. So if it’s not a job, it’s a volunteer type thing. Not only that, they would have to pay every athlete money and the same amount because if they don’t, then more uproar would occur. Lastly, would you rather have good facilities coaches and a great stadium to play in and not make money, or make money and get crappy facilities. Lower income schools would go bankrupt if this would happen and that would lower education levels because of cheaper schools shutting down.

That is especially true when that person is young and with a whole life that should be look forward to and trying to better his or her station to life. This problem clearly goes well beyond college athletics. That is why you should vote for Bernie Sanders., because everybody should have the basics to life, which should never be compromised. And I do get why this subject is so thorny, why the college itself can not directly pay for athletes whether you are at the elite Duke Blue Devils, to North Carolina, to Witchita State to some shit Florida college no is ever going to hear about its important that the NCAA has parody. And that is why it has got to be adressed to higher authorities. Bernie Sanders 2016 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The short answer is no, student athletes should not be paid. Well except for one thing, which is the amount of sponsors these students bring in. When the students cut the net they climb a Werner ladder, a ladder which is being heavily plugged by the NCAA. The moment they climb that ladder or appear in a videogame or give an interview by a product branded table, they're effectively endorsing a product, and this they should be paid for, because it has fuck all to do with the universities they attend.

Personally, I think there should definitely be a lot more compensation for student athletes. They put their lives and health on the line and are responsible for raking in a ton of money for these big schools especially. I'm not saying they should be payed like professionals. Not even close. But your asking a lot from student athletes with little return. The only real problem with this I see, would be that currently rich schools could just "buy" all the new recruits they want. But that's what the afore mentioned limitations are for.

That being said, I don't think they should be paid by way of salary or anything like that. I think more scholarships, and more stability. Like kareem mentioned, if you get to college on an athletic scholarship, but get hurt, they can just dump you with the medical bills. Maybe contracts involving guaranteed rehab in case of injuries, as well as better meal plans, etc. But I'm just tossing around ideas.

@carterjohnson3879
@carterjohnson3879 8 лет назад
Well, such hostility. The point of this particular issue is that playing in college athletics is a full time job. Sprts are big money. Student athletes are putting in a ton of work for their programs. They do almost as much work as professional players, some of which make millions. You don't see any problem with universities and football coaches making incredible amounts of money off of athletes, without much return? I'm not saying that they should be paid with salaries or huge figures. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of these student athletes come from pretty poor beginnings. Most athletic scholarships don't cover meal plans, so in some cases, students are practically starving because they can't afford them on their own. What do you do at your job? Just a question. These students get scholarships, but they can lose them just as easily because of an injury. Is having rehab built into their scholarship hurting you in any way? That's what I'm advocating. Just better conditions of the scholarships they're offered. Also, there are academic scholarships. A kid I know just went to stanford for just under 7 grand because of his academics. And you might bust your ass doing your job, but you are getting paid to do it. And likely your job doesn't benefit the university you attend the way a student athletes does. Also, you seem to be forgetting that these guys and gals are busting their butts as well at practices and games. And you think that they can realistically fit another full time job into their schedule?
@evacody1249

+Delain124 Yes, they are students. there are also, however, athletes who happen to be responsible for a massive amount of revenue.
