@@foolspeedahead Bob's not a "youtuber" lol but bet your ass I know him. Even Pat is more of a "firearms instructor" who happens to be on RU-vid. All Paul Harrell does now is RU-vid. I also happen to think he's the most thorough and scientific guy on this website.
Nothing is gonna help accuracy and shots on target like staying calm and keeping the heart rate down. All that jerking and turning around is gonna hurt you more than anyone else.
Went to my rifle class yesterday and during the transition to my pistol I did the pull back and scan. My instructor asked me what I was looking at because my threat was in front of me. He also mentioned this video to me so I had to come watch it. Good stuff!
@Romans 13:4 "Your weapon should be kept at the ready and track with your eyes." So just flag everyone around you with a loaded gun while you assess who is a threat and who isn't? Sounds legit to me.
@@REB4444 "Going to get you killed." Your talking to a guy that was in the infantry and has been through a combat deployment and came back alive. You have any idea have stupid you sound to me? "pulling the pistol back after every shot." That is a scarecrow argument.
@@REB4444 "They didn't teach us to shoot, pause, and take your sights off the enemy after each shot." Another scarecrow argument. You argue like a woman.
@@The_Tradwife Your obvious need to be belligerent and insulting, coupled with your complete lack of any ability to post any other point of view other than "I WAS A VET! I SERVED IN COMBAT! LISTEN TO ME BECAUSE I SAY I WAS A VET IN COMBAT" shows you as someone not worth listening to. Try having a rational, adult discussion instead of beating your chest and trying to prove how inferior everyone else is. Most Vets I've had the pleasure of knowing don't pull the "I was a Vet. You know nothing" card like an SJW using the race card. And by the way - I believe the term you are looking for is "Straw man" argument, not "scarecrow." Considering that REB4 addressed the subject that was discussed in the video, i.e., pulling the pistol back after every shot and why that's not a good course of action, I would suggest you are, again, simply being belligerent. "You argue like a woman" isn't worth pointing out except to laugh at and show what an obvious buffoon you must be.
@@TheDoctor1225 "what an obvious buffoon you must be." Says the guy who is wading into a 4 month old conversation and going full beta with his comment.
I like this guy, everytime I called someone out, called an instructor out or asked questions it always devolved into a pissing match; "whats your combat experience, who do you train with, where did you deploy, what school did you go to, how far can you piss, how much can you bench, how far can you run". He hits everything on the button. Thanks Pat
It's sad how prevalent that is in so many other fields, too. I remember encountering that in EMS during my training as a CFR and then as an EMT. You could always tell the difference between people there to instruct and people there to show you that they knew everything, they were God, and if you questioned them, you could count on that same nonsense, starting with something snide like "Well, since I'VE been.....and YOU'RE just training..." You even see it in the comment section here, or in sections on other videos. Invariably, some "I'm Super Vet because I say so and you MUST listen to me!" comes along and that's how it all devolves as the pissing match begins.
"I QUIT!" LMAO!!! I thought I was the only person who gets annoyed by people who go to the range and pretend they are a Navy Seal and are always doing shit they saw in a movie :-)
Dudes that get into bar brawls are testosterone raging twenty-somethings that are insecure (a.k.a "losers"). I don't think Pat is getting into bar brawls.
It seems over the past decade police firearms training is infested with new techniques and gimmicks that showcase the instructor rather than practical training. I've wanted to label this bullshit but never could find the right wording. "Range Theatrics" that's it. Thanks Pat.
I have 30 years of policing. You hit the nail on the head. Infested! The only thing worse is doing something the same way because we've always done it that way.
Which is exactly why people won't argue with him, he gets to be "right" and people end up in trouble for flagging a crowd or get profiled from a distance as "the shooter" in a public incident. Different situations are going to require different tactics. That's why there is a grid showing the questions related to whether the environment is friendly or hostile, permissive or nonpermissive, then more questions over whether the action is covert or clandestine and Pat knows better, but is giving just one corner of that in his videos.
8digitPDX If your booger picker ain't on the trigger who gives a f@ck if you flagg someone. Safety Dan is why we can't train effectively any more. Well Safety Dan and Morons. In Actual combat situations you're gonna get flagged and flagged ALOT. We tell people Everytime we hit the range "We're running wide open just like real life. If you don't like it leave." Gun don't go boom unless someone sticks their booger picker on the trigger and squeezes it. Flag me all day everyday I don't care. Just don't put your booger picker on the damn trigger.
One thing that cannot be argued... PatMac is his own breed. Bad ass in all the simplest ways but genuine and true to himself all at the same time. A real world mentor!!!
Pat hands down is the most practical commonsense "celebrity operator/ teacher". His no bullshit approach keeps his students getting the most out of training.
Finally, someone was willing to talk about the "elephant in the room" with all this range theatrics that have been around for a few years. Oh crap, no more looking "tacticool" just good ol gun fighting techniques.
Hell yeah hits the nail on the head! All these tactical RU-vid celebrity's who are training couch dads how to look cool at the range should take this guys class!
LMAO! Pat just pissed off range ninjas everywhere. I can't stand tacticool tools. Alan Kay does the same thing to tacticoolies, and I think it's hysterical. The truth is that most of us are nothing but average joes, just trying to become more proficient with our firearms for hunting or defense purposes, but there are always a few that act like they're training to be an extra in the next Rambo sequel.
Pat, I'm glad you make it clear.. "Train like you Fight". there are so many out there doing Range Theatrics... You are awesome.. a real gunfighter. thank you for all you do.!!
This is the greatest video ever! And you are correct, assess with the barrel, not just your eyes. So many tools on RU-vid think they have it... some of them are instructors! They really have guys out here looking left and right... what about your 6! Furthermore, say you do spot a threat, he’s gonna fry your back because your weapon is pointed in the wrong direction
There's a guy at my local range that does this. I call him the search and assess douche, because he smirks when he looks side to side like he's trying to make sure and see if anyone thinks he looks cool. I asked him what he was looking for one day and got no reply. Just a frown. Personally I think it's better to look at what or where you'll be shooting.
Grey Shadows that’s not his job to teach strangers. As he said he’s there for range time stress relief. Your comment also assumes the douche would take criticism/suggestions
I wonder when guys "scan" during training if you stood next to them and pointed a gun at them would the look at you, turn to the opposite side and then quickly realize what just happened and turn back toward your direction which would end up being a fail of the practice. I would never do this just something to think about. I see guys do it on the range and can clearly see they just make the head movements to "just do it" I could be dancing half naked swinging my sling-ding and by the time they realized it they would already have turned the other way.
I've been saying this for a while. it has become a drill that needs to be done because that's what is expected. it has become an administrative move and becoming a scar. it has its place but is just a habit for most.
Thank you! I love Travis Haley, but he and that... interesting guy he made the Magpul videos with are the ones who really popularized that moronic maneuver.
Regardless of what people say, PMac is a 22 year Special Forces Operator. Stalked more bodies and got into more firefights than most. His training has more ground to stand on than others
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Did I say, "Thank You?" I've seen this so many times it drives me nuts, but they get that idea from the Outdoor Channel gurus who tell them to scan their surroundings for additional threats. I get the idea and instruct something "similar" in my classes, the scan is only done after the main threat has been neutralized and certainly not after every shot. That attempt to build muscle memory in that way can get them hurt...or worse.
I'm new to watching some McNamara videos and this guy at first seemed like a tool, after a couple of videos he all of a sudden becomes a great instructor with an intense personality. I really like the rawness and simplicity of his instructions.
DwFritz23 that was my first impression as well. Then I watched an other view my favorite gun channel did with him where he introduced himself as “a regular dude that used to do cool shit” and I was like “he’s got his head straight”. Anymore, I see a guy on RU-vid or in a magazine and the first sentence said or written is “Navy SEAL”, I move on. This guy has as or more impressive a CV, but doesn’t bank on the recognition, just lets his information and his personality do the magic.
Totally agree. That drives me insane. I think it comes from comp shooters looking to see if they finished their targets in the specified time. People using you tube in place of experience have just copied the move and it just keeps getting passed from one you tube cowboy to the next and it wont die.
+LAusmcprep I have no idea what competition shooters you have been watching, but little ol' me as just a B class flunkie in USPSA and an Expert in IDPA have never once ever glanced around at the end of a stage looking for more targets. 99.9% of the stages I shot there was no "par time" or fixed time that we had to complete the stage in. The timer is running as soon as it goes beep and doesn't stop until its microphone picks up the last shot fired.
Here's what they need to add to they're training, I QUIT!!! Best video ever haha. Rock on Pat Mac! Never understood that whole routine people who are "tacticool" do.
It’s a joke I think that became serious when the wrong idiot got a hold of it and told all his idiot buddies and they’re stupid heads just shook yes so hard it sounded like a box of ammo getting tossed for a a game of hot potato. Lol
Pat makes some good points in this video, but to everyone bashing scanning please watch Sage Dynamics video on Follow Through and Scanning, it is the best explanation I have seen.
This is a very good point. I don't own a holster yet and did that to practice raising my pistol while being aligned with the target. I never thought that I am ingraining muscle memory to take down my gun. Damn. Live and learn.
While he's got a point, I think we can expand the principle. Not only does the shooting community need to get a grip on the Range Theatrics, we could also do well to get a handle on all the beard theatrics we've got going on. McNamara, James "Clutchpro" Yeager, and Chris Costa all come to mind immediately.
It is weird how this came up in my feed because I just coauthor myself doing that today and couldn’t even say why. But at least I did recognize it and stop it.
I've never shot somebody, then looked left and right immediately afterwords. I wonder if the lookers do that with a ma deuce, as well. *CHUNKCHUNKCHUNKCHUNKCHUNKCHUNK* (SWIVEL LEFT! SWIVEL RIGHT!)
I have. But not like they teach. When my eyes go my barrel goes. What's the point of looking if you can't shoot what you see? Pop pop scanning for a new threat over the barrel
I actually needed some acting coaching if I continued shooting at ranges with some of these guys. Now I don't. Thank you Mr. Pat McNamara. This is refreshing and real. Here is a guy I could follow.
HILARIOUS! Thank You, I needed that. I had a party at my farm. Told all my work buddies to bring their firearms. Of course the "New" guy brought his Glock with the barrel compensation and red dot sight. A firearm he spent $1200 in mods. At this point he said he said he hadn't spent even a single mag of ammo through it. So about 7 of us line up at pistol distance. Myself firing my Beretta Cougar 8045F. As everyone started firing at their various targets, I received a shoulder tap to stop and see what "Kenny" was doing. Single shots, (Missed Shots) then superfluous head turning. I had to suppress my laughter and ask "Kenny" to hold his fire and remove himself from our firing position. As with his 5th or 6th miss, he negligent discharge from the "Compressed Ready" position angered me severely.
I've always wondered why ppl do that dumb little head turn. U would never do that if someone was returning fire. He's exactly right, if your going to do that the gun needs to go with.
