this was my daddy's favorite piece of music to listen to before he died. he listened to it every day. and it was his last train home - we played it for him at his funeral. thank you, Pat Metheny, for bringing a smile to my daddy's face, and helping him on his last train ride.
Thank you so much for sharing this very personal memory. I have almost forgotten this beautiful, beautiful, peaceful piece of music and all my memories attached to it. This is definitely one of the pieces I want to listen to on my last train ride.
@@JayDee284 well done on absolutely ruining a part 5 and part 6 which didnt know exsisted 😅. But nice 1 as i thought that was the complete end to the show ... ill have to have a look.
@@user-yv1ux6vj4i I am Korean, and I also came to know this song by the ending theme of JOJO's Bizarre Adventure from Netflix. The anime itself is quite energetic, battle-filled & action-filled, and far from serene. However, after each episodes, this music used as an ending theme kind of soothes / pacifies(?) our minds little bit.
I first heard it in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It was just the end credits but I remember it stunning me. "Wow. that was amazing" I thought. Now I discovered Pat's work. It's absolutely beautiful.
Love Pat Metheny...my husband introduced me to his music back in 1985....and this song was playing when we said, "I love you" for the very first time. Thank you Pat for touching our souls!!!!
Jo Ann Carpenter same with me and my gramps. We were on a road trip with a bunch of friends back in ‘87, and we played pat methany and the Beagles all the way
no vi jojos a tiempo pero hace 2 años perdi a un amigo que admiraba y 2 semanas despues veo el episodio donde vencen a vanilla ice y hasta ahora me dan ganas de llorar con esta cancion
The instrument is a Coral Sitar (basically an electric guitar with a special rosewood bridge that causes all the strings to make a whirring sound, mimicking an actual sitar.) Vinnie Bell invented it for the Danelectro company in the '60s. It actually has a sound all it's own. They were very popular in '60s and '70s pop and R&B music (and no, not the Beatles. That was a real sitar). Many hits recorded on this instrument. This one had some modifications. This is one of my favorite songs on this beautiful instrument.
@@towardsthesun4380 You can find them on the internet. Jerry Jones makes Danelectro copies that are very good. I paid around $800 for one around 17 years ago off Ebay.
@@stuartadamsrailfanningvideos ....incredible pianist/keyboardist and yet so subtle here as he often was with Metheny. It's the color that he contributed and just made the groups sound all that much more. I just picked up Pat's new album today and the clerk mentioned his passing....just sad sad shock.
My dad played this song to me every day growing up, he said I must play it at his funeral.. for that will be his last train home to the lord.. this song gives me so many emotions.. was lucky enough to send my dad to see pat in Seattle.. he was absolutely ecstatic.. one of the best musicians there was in the jazz industry
This had once been my most powerful melody, I was in a hostile environment and in an extremely difficult situation in life, prone to suicide or any other mad act, yet I knew this melody and that piece, I had it on any time in my earphones, long ago, and it gave me such courage that I went through all of it, in fact I sometimes laughed about the situation, and I knew I just had to go through it, it was the only thing of help at the time, it lifted me up in the worst of circumstances, it gave me a determination to reach outside of where I was, even the title of the song was helpful, last train home, I knew that would take me home, and not sure it was this piece of music or any other higher force, I got there where I headed to be. Each time when I listen to it I am moved, and if I were to choose a piece for any circumstance of life, it would be right this one, what a fantastic group of musicians of and around Pat Metheny.
This song is the theme song of my life. I've had way too many troubles in my life to even count, but this song has been there for me through everything, good times, bad times, and indifferent, even when things are just moving along.
It was YOU that got you through your troubled times. We all go through heartache and despair. It’s how we sort things out (especially with music) that carries us through and makes us stronger. Glad you are still here 😊
Pat Metheny is a fantastic musician. This song is a true excellent piece of music. I close my eye and I can see that train passing heading home. The song "To the End of the World" is another one of his songs I love. Thank you for your music Pat and God Bless you.
This song gets my soul to feel blue and turn bright yellow, like as if I can finally relax or be at peace after a bad day, but still remember the good parts of that day.
On a cool early autmun day, my best friend and I took that last train ride from the south central portion of Washington state to the north east corner where I had always told him from day one, " I will, get you home. No matter the distance, the conditions or the situation, I WILL get you home and take care of you." I kept that promise with tis exact music playing the entire length back home.... That was almost 16 years ago , two years and a bit after his passing to the day of this posting. He and I shared thousands of miles, endless plane train and car and truck rides togetehr and through it all in the end, he nor I ever complained about the shortness of life . Instead , we lived that moment that day and that minute only for that point in time. Mister Pat Metheny, you've been the music and the background score for so many of us in so many circurstances and in so many points in many of our lives. It's to you who we owe you so much for being the person and the soul to so many of our lives and providing the background score for all of us , with no regard to our background or stories . For we all, all very much alike... Whisltes blowin' , and we sir, Salute you . B Bear 11-11-07/08=27-2021
Pat, Lyle, Steve, Paul, Armando y Pedro, un inolvidable conjunto, la mejor agrupación que existió, hubieran estado juntos por muchos años, hasta la muerte de Lyle en 2020. Juntos hicieron música increíble.
The time has come to move on...the seasons are changing...leaving the old to embrace the new...unfamiliar ground awaits me...the feelings of sadness mixed with gladness moves within me...come sweet death, come.
@@jeffdonnasammond3323 I have a 3 year old little boy.. who loves trains.. when I play this song for him, he seems mesmerized, like his Daddy.. I have a feeling Pat Metheny's music will be enjoyed for generations to come... the Good Stuff transcends time...

Man, this is such an awesome live recording. At 1:00, but specifically 1:05ish, that note that he pulls down gives It a much sadder and emotional feel than the studio version. Can’t help but replaying that little phrase over and over.
Just stumbled upon this jewel 💎 after 30 years of searching. Heard it as a kid on Thanksgiving in the 80's. Haven't heard it since. Hummed the melody to everyone I knew for 30years no one knew it. Played the melody..no one knew it and I just happened to get lucky on Spotify. Thank you God for this beautiful song and the completion of my long musical journey for this piece.

Lovingly, and Sadly. Lyle Mays did not miss the last train home,...and now we, will miss Lyle for a time. Thank you Lyle, for the awareness you bestowed upon us all.
Metheny and Mays together make up one of the coldest duo's, right alongside if not in front of Fagen and Becker. That melody is sick sick SICK!!!! This track along with the theme from The Falcon and The Snowman are shining examples of their compositional and arranging excellence.
Still my favorite Metheny composition. How I fell in love with this art form. Always brings a tear to my eye with I think about my loved ones so far away. Look up Publix and Train.
I was fortunate to catch his performance in Seattle at the Fifth Ave. Theater back in the early 90's I will always remember the effect he had on me and the rest of the Audience. (Spell bounding)
I do thank the creators of that anime, for using my greatest inspiration and one of his greatest songs, as a theme for their credits. It has educated the viewers into the world of jazz fusion, and Pat Metheny is one of the greatest exponents of the genre and the guitar, along with Steve Rodby on bass, and the late great Lyle Mays on keyboards. Cheers!
Sometimes I feel like the only guy in the world who got into each separately and unknown of any connection. I bought it used at a Disc Go Round (imagine such a place) in Denver in 2003. I was a guitar player who had outgrown the Zeppelins and Floyd's of the world. Got into anime on accident around the exact same time with Bebop. Finally doing JoJo's and am at Stone Ocean. Needless to say I was floored when this was ed 5. This and the photo made me sad immediately. Pat is a god. Araki is a lunatic.
Just feels like taking this Last Train to an endless destination, just ride the train motions ! Incredible feeling ! Marçal on the percussion just added a touch of speed of the train ! Thanks for this precious video !
