The oldest and perhaps first people on the continent of Wraeclast were the Vaal.
Well-versed in the ways of thaumaturgy, they discovered The Tears of the Maji which were magical gems that if harnessed, provided great powers. But as their queen became more and more obsessed with eternal youth and the human sacrifice that demanded it, their civilization came to an abrupt end.
The fall of the Vaal led to the rise of the Azmeri, who shared the same fascination with gems, but to a much larger degree. Malachai, a thaumaturgist, created Gemlings, by surgically implanting gems into people.
Not everybody was on board with that, so the Templars were formed to overthrow the thaumaturgy-worshipping emperor. Lead by High Templar Voll, the rebels won and Voll became emperor.
Then, in his efforts to rid all magic, Voll set out to destroy the source: The Beast.
...But he failed and there was another cataclysm that left the continent in ruin.
Centuries later, on the nearby island of Oriath, the Templars rule as a religious theocracy. Dominus, the High Templar, punishes those who have committed crimes by exiling them to Wraeclast, including one anonymous prisoner who might just stumble upon Dominus’ secretive research into the ancient thaumaturgy.
