I've been on a megalodon tooth finding frenzy lately. Sloth Party is giving them up like candy and I'm the kid who can't get enough so I'm showing up as often as I can with my bag open for more treats. Diva is right there too, she's been having quite the lucky streak herself. I wish I had more to write about this video, but it seems my creative muse took the day off to go collecting also and I am left to my own devices to write an introduction to another shark tooth hunting video. There are big shark teeth, there are little shark teeth, there are large chunks whale bones, and a whole lot of shovel on gravel action. So if that sounds good to you, this is probably a great choice for a video to watch.

I do love the teeth in this area that have that sort of silvery gunmetal gray enamel coloring. I never get tired of that

I'm glad to hear you say that because sometimes I wonder if people get sick of seeing the same ol' black and grey teeth? I know I can't control what color they are when they come out of the ground, but for a while everything I was finding was lighter colored and some people really liked those. thank you for your comment and for watching!

That was a great dig. #70 is a beauty. I found a killer 4.6” patho Angy last weekend. The cutting edges roll toward the lingual side, forming a channel between the cutting edges and the blade. Wish you had a website we could send pictures to. Thinking about sending it to the Fossil guy because I think it is pretty unique.

Is there a drying process the teeth have to go through, after you unearth them, to keep them from cracking up and splitting?
@tanyanosek1938
@tanyanosek1938 8 месяцев назад
I want to know this too!
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 8 месяцев назад
good question. I let all my teeth air dry for a day or two before I wash them. When they come out of the ground, sometimes the roots are soft and that's the time when they could easily fall apart. once they are dry they are usually solid enough to wash. then I let them dry again before I evaluate them further. if I see that the roots have any fresh cracks or parts that are crumbling, I apply a mixture of butvar and acetone or polyvinylacetate (pva) and acetone to harden them and usually that's all it takes. I usually never have to do anything with the enamel because it is so hard to begin with, it doesn't crack any more. i have seen some cases where the enamel is separating from the tooth in a few places, and then I carefully remove any dirt or sand that's stuck in there and then use super glue to secure it. for the most part, teeth from this spot have been pretty solid so I haven't had to do anything extra to preserve them. Its usually the lighter colored teeth that need some extra TLC.

Aren't you afraid that having all those AI images out there will give a false impression of what the whole process looks like? Bones piled up with full skeletons like there were shark graveyards, etc.?
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 8 месяцев назад
i hadn't actually considered that, but now that I think about it, its not that far from reality in some spots. Think about the Florida shell pits where there were skeletons and bones everywhere. I have seen photos of that and wished that I could have seen it in person. I got lucky enough to participate in the Camelot digs at the Giant Cement quarry in Harleyville SC around 20 years ago and it was like that. there were literally bones in piles in the sand. We would scrape away sand with trowels, thinking we got to the edge of the skeleton, only to find more bones right there. In one place there was a giant sloth pelvis as wide as the hood of a car, and inside it were the bones of camels, horses, lynx, and more. While excavating it, there were shark teeth scattered around the base. I sat on a dirt mound for hours, carefully exposing bone after bone inside that jumble. Then when we excavated where I saw, there was the skull of a saber cat. all of this was inside an area no bigger than about 10 feet by 10 feet. Although not as spectacular as the Camelot site, the Sloth Party site has a whole lot of bones too. Most of them are broken up but there are a lot of them. I don't show how many bones we dig up, but I do try to put a few in each video just to show that they are there. But we find more bones than any other fossil. On a normal day here we find 20 pounds of bones. They are packed in there, at least 1 every foot or so, sometimes piled up together. So the AI pictures aren't exactly like reality, because usually there are not articulated skeletons, but they illustrate the idea of how things came to be as they are and they are much more pleasing to look at than me moving dirt and talking into the camera.

Sharks do not have bone they have cartilage. That is why the only fossilized parts of the shark are the teeth.
