Victoria Ventura, wife and mother of four, shares her diagnosis and treatment journey with a serious and often underdiagnosed condition of coronary microvascular dysfunction or CMD. CMD is a type of non-obstructive coronary artery disease that causes decreased blood flow to the heart muscle. She talks about the importance of advocating for yourself as a patient and why people should explore participation in a clinical trial.

Wife and mother of four, Victoria Ventura, struggled with debilitating chest pain for 11 years before receiving a proper diagnosis. Her quality of life continued to decline and eventually left her bedridden. After several misdiagnoses and encounters with physicians who questioned the legitimacy of her concerns, Victoria decided to take matters into her own hands and began her own research, which led her to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
Thanks to her determination, Victoria finally received answers and was diagnosed with coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD), a serious and often underdiagnosed heart condition. After her diagnosis, Victoria enrolled in a clinical trial, which ended up changing her life. Within a month after treatment, Victoria has been able to walk a mile and enjoy spending time with her family again.

Thanks for publicizing CMD! I've had symptoms for 15 years, but was diagnosed this month (unfortunately after an event left me exhausted, chronically short of breath, and with chest pain and pressure). I was treated for GERD (later ruled out with testing), COPD (later ruled out with testing) and had several ER visits for these symptoms, with cardiac testing turning up nothing. I'm going to see a specialist soon and hope to be up and moving around again!

I am a male with a recent CMD diagnosis. I completely understand Victoria's frustrations. Prior to a CFR analysis, I experienced multiple interventions, tests and visits with frustrating results as well as guesses and confusion about what was going on. Although the disease is still causing a significant reduction in quality of my life, it is an important and relieving step just to receive the diagnosis. I am grateful. Now, however, it is time for the coronary medical community to move aggressively to determine better approaches to dealing with the symptoms, causes, and corrections for this misunderstood disease. The treatments at this time are limited, and most were not specifically developed for CMD. I hope that organizations like the American Heart Association, med schools and research organizations can now give CMD the attention it deserves.
