When you do something right, it's expensive. For blockbusters and anime, the 1990s way of doing things was actually pretty good and put the early 2000s ways to shame. The early 2000s way was faster and cheaper, though.
@@hypothalapotamus5293 Modern animation is way better thou, early 2000s animation was still mostly experimental since a lot of the technologies where new

Those wouldn’t be wire guided missiles, more likely beam rider or laser guided. The complexities of keeping a wire spool on a helicopter that is moving around a battlefield would be VERY annoying and very deadly for said helicopter
@@MrCoolguy425 lol? We have already had tow missiles (wire guided) be launched from helicopters such as the huey and ah-1 cobras and other platforms lol…
@@gaem_sung2152 as I said “more likely” wire guided missiles on airborne craft are a scarcity nowadays either being replaced by RF variants of the same system, or being replaced outright by new missiles. Wire guided missiles have a couple of major drawbacks when dealing with aircraft and as such are generally replaced with before mentioned items. Earlier models in the Cold War didn’t have the luxury of small cheap laser designators and thus wire guided missiles were preferable. The only current platforms that I know of that use specifically wire guided missiles are the AH-1W and the Lynx. Edit: I forgot the Malyutka which were deployed on the MI-2, 8, and 24. Regardless my point stands. These seem like quite modern helicopters doing complex maneuvers in a crowded battle space. Lots of stuff to get a wire tangled on and helicopters wouldn’t be doing those maneuvers if they had to worry about them.
@@MrCoolguy425 I don’t know about dates for anything, but this movie came out a while ago. They might still have been using an older understanding of military technology. These are animators, even if they asked for some consultation.
Big wing on helicopter affect hovering. So helicopter with big wing like Mi-24 only attack in a high speed pass rather than pop-up and shoot like western helicopter.
I assumed the VTOL part was implied. When saying gunship in a modern or near future context, we're usually talking about helicopters, or something that could move like one.
@@plopolip2135 Patlabor as a whole wasn't, but this movie in particular is very Cyberpunk in the way it deals with information warfare and the use of a small group of technical professional (although in this case robot jocks) operating outside the proper channels and/or actually slightly breaking the law to end the conflict. Remember, by this time Noa was a Shinohara test pilot and Azuma was about to take over the company's engineering division. Goto technically recruited actual civilians to join the fight. More importantly, the interactions between the various players in the police force and defense establishment are literally taken straight out of GitS.
Thats like an every day occurence in Planetside 2. Your faction fight this one battle for 1 minute without anti air, immediately rolled by every aircraft of every load out in that one battle.
Me: Decides to focus economy just a bit too much in the beginning. Nod: Did someone say Venom swarms? Alt Ending: GDI Hammerheads "So anyway I started blasting"
CGI sucks, when its lazily done. It is totaly possible to create CGI scenes that blend into the movie without you noticing that they are cgi. Most actions scenes with cars in modern movies are CGI and nobody notices. The problem with CGI in animation is, that it is difficult to blend it in without making it look like a cheap cell shaded model out of borderlands.
I would say there is so much more to appreciate with traditional hand drawn mechanical images, in motion. It kind of blows you away knowing that some guy hand drew all of those detailed and consistent frames. In saying that, I don't mind CGI. Eg, I do like the CGI tanks in Girls Und Panzer. They are detailed, animated at a higher frame rate and the studio makes best use of the fact they are CGI which allows them much more dynamic camera angles. Arpeggio of Blue Steel is also pretty good when the ships turn into giant lasers and start shooting everywhere. The Kantai Collection film blends CGI mechanics fairly well and I'd dare say it's probably one of the best integrations I've seen. In summary, CGI works when the CGI looks good and that the animation productions takes advantage of the fact they are using CGI.
A Hind merely would have chuckled. For it may carry a Yak-B rotary HMG, a set of rocket pods, and some ATGMs. Also, anything under 23mm is survivable. Beat that, AH-64! Also, KA-50 has enough to level several blocks. It's a flying armory!
@@KoishiVibin Except both the Hind and the KA-50 handle like bricks with wings, and remember, the Hind is the bastard lovechild of a transport and attack helicopter. It does neither very well by modern standards, and just like the T-90 and T14 Armada, the Russians barely built any KA-50s or 52s. plus, why would we upgrade the AH64 much more when we have AC130s and A10s for if we need really heavy ordinance.
@@claytonmachine12 The AH64 fills that niche I suppose. Close Protection Support. The A-10 can do it's runs, but it's got a very short time of engagement. The 130 can do engagement for a long time, but it takes a while to get there. Both cannot take off or land in crowded zones. An attack helo gives VTOL overwatch capacity. It's Achilles heel is mostly MANPADS and the like, but that goes for the A-10 too.
@@Omega_1111 true, but these look like Hellfires, which do have a decent warhead, but you need a specialized warhead of a much higher explosive mass if you are trying to take down steel and concrete bridges; the United States learned this lesson EXTREMELY well in Vietnam when they dropped something like 5,000 tons of bombs on a single bridge and didn't do jack shit to it except damaging the asphalt.
@@gamertardguardian1299 lol, never seen Bolt. Just watched the helicopter scene from that movie here on RU-vid and of course those enemy gunships sure look like these. Good catch!
@Mau Kin Yau By this point in the movie, the entire region is being jammed by the yellow blimps. The deployed JSDF have no way to coordinate a defense.
Analogous to the 30mm Avenger probably. Extremely heavy for a helicopter to carry especially on a turret mount. Recoil firing abeam would knock the whole chopper for six lol

@@dawidkiller He's talking about the failed coup d'état attempt that took place in July of 2016 in Turkey. During the coup, several Turkish military helicopters (and aircraft) were taken over by those who were trying to overthrow the government, and used them to attack pro-government counter-protestors, government buildings, outposts, and even police stations. Hellfire/Brimstone ATGM and AGM are the most powerful attack helicopter's strike option. And they're capable of inflicting only minor damage to such structures as bridges. In fact, such target require a number of JDAM direct hits for similar results to ones shown.

They don’t make animations like these anymore, The Golden age of animation before it crashed the anime industry and budget restrictions then after became the Anime production Administration that controls the sorting out of the studios
I really mis 80's and 90's anime. I know that there was a ton of poorly drawn garbage, but the high quality stuff was mind blowing and still holds up today. The modern stuff can look good but it mostly is meant to look "good enough" while staying within the ever decreasing animation budget. The stuff from the early days of digital paint, about 15-20 years ago, that's some true garbage.

Not sure what the aesthetic decision was here to not include a tail rotor or NOTAR/coaxial rotors. If this existed in real life, it would have spun out of control unless it is an autogyro. It being an autogyro would also well explain why it had to continuously move like an airplane though.
I see no real means of forward propulsion. Those turboshaft engines even have exhaust louvers, making it doubtful that the exhaust would provide any thrust. I think it's just a mistake.
The total lack of on-screen deaths let alone injuries in this scene, which is very 'Patlabor'-y, contrasted with the realism & seriousness of the film and the level of destruction is kinda funny but also, like... uncanny? It's hard to believe that no one actually died or seriously wounded here, and I think some later dialogue can be interpreted as there being a big casualty from this. And I think I had or have similar feelings towards the movie as a whole. When I first watched this film *after* finishing the very light hearted and comedic TV-series, it was kinda shocking just how dark it was (not to mention the lack of Kanuka.. Clancy?!... WTF OSHII, WHERE IS MY KANUKA?!?!?!1111 Oh, ahem.). I later learned that technically they were meant to be on different timelines... (according to Patlabor Official Website they are; this film is a continuation of first OVA & the film, wheres TV series+new OVA is it's own thing, and manga series also being a separate timeline... manga had Kanuka at the end though... WHY CAN'T WE HAVE KANUKA IN THE SECOND MOVIE TOO, HUH, OSH- (I'm just kidding... or AM I?)).. but, it was still sad to see all that was built up by the prior series (Tv And new OVA), the light hearted hopefulness, Gotou and Nagato's relationship, not to mention Kanuka Clancy the best girl, and all the rest... still kinda breaks my heart. The movie is great and I still love it in its own right, though. Sorry for the ranty comment, lol Just one final word..... KANUKA CLANCY FOREVERRRR!!!🎉❤❤✌️🤩😊
