On this season of RU-vidr Family Trees, I dig into the family tree of Matt Baker from Useful Charts.
On this fourth episode, we look at Matt's Levy ancestry, which was likely from a Jewish patrilineal line tracing to 18th century Nova Scotia. This episode focuses on his 5th-great grandfather Gershom Levy who lived through the Raid on Chester in 1782 and seemed to have a rough life.

We have brass 'stumbling stones' here, hammered firmly into the cobble stone walkways, to honor and remember the victims of the dictatorship, who were sent away to camps. Among them was a Levy family. I pass by their former house each day. It seems that many Jewish families lived here in this area, at that time. All of that is unimaginable but here we are on... Earth.

Yay! This was very good. I was disappointed when you stopped! LOL. I have a distant cousin who has discovered he has Lunenburg ancestry. He is of German ancestry on his mother's side and Cape Ann, Massachusetts, on his father's side but on his father's side also of German ancestry in Lunenburg. I'm going to recommend this video series to him. I've been waiting to see you post again. Thank you for sharing.

Very interesting... I do wish you had followed up with the Find A Grave record that stated that Adelaide was born in 1877... Looking into it appears her and her husband shared a gravestone and he died first in 1959 and then when she died in 1969, she was added to the gravestone. Whoever supplied the information thought she was born in 1877, it would be interesting to see her death certificate. It is interesting to me because these are the type of discrepancies we often see, my grandfather was born either 1883 or 1886. It could be either the informant just didn't know for sure or that's what they thought was fact... People often lied about their age because they wanted to be older for whatever reason... a marriage, they had a child at a young age, they immigrated, they enlisted in military... it says on the Find-a-grave site that Adelaide married in 1899, so if she was only 18/19, had she been born in 1877 instead she'd have been 22 so that may be where the fib started, if there was one ... Just because it's carved in stone doesn't mean it's correct!

All good points! Unfortunately, I always end up having to cut a lot for time. Context of the documents makes a huge difference when it comes to contradictions like this, which is why I felt more confident in the Census since it would be much harder to mistake a 9 month old baby for a 4 year old toddler, even if the information on the family came from the neighbors. Yet every piece of information does need to be considered in any conclusion given. Carved in stone definitely doesn't mean it's correct! My 3rd-great grandmother's name is misspelled on her gravestone! I had to spend a long time correlating documents while also proving that a Bacee Dudies born in Odessa didn't not show up in any records, so I could confidently say it was my ancestor Bessie Dudis. Another big giveaway was the Hebrew on her stone is not right, basically non-sensical with characters written incorrectly, so whoever made her gravestone was not Jewish and straight up messed up everything.

Gershom Levy is my 5th great grandfather. This Levy family descended from Moses Raphael Levy who was a wealthy Jewish Merchant. The family comes from Jewish ancestry.

That is what a lot of the family trees show but unfortunately there has been no definitive proof at this point that Gershom descends from Moses Raphael Levy. I'm hoping we can do a Y-DNA study which will definitively answer that question.

This was absolutely fascinating. First of all I am blown away, I had no idea that the US attacked Canadian villages. So disappointing to hear that. With Ukraine in the news, it wasn't hard to empathize with this little villages that were bombarded, just awful. Regarding, Jewishness it is irrelevant if the paternal line is Jewish or not, if the maternal line was not Jewish then I do not see how someone can call themselves Jewish. If the maternal line is broken then the children are not Jewish. So I am very interested in seeing how this pans out. You made a seemingly boring subject fascinating with your knowledge of history, so glad I found your channel today.

I wouldn't say the US attacked Canadian villages. They were all colonies of Great Britain. Quebec and Nova Scotia decided not to join the other colonies in rebellion, which is why there were only 13 colonies instead of 15.

When researching that woman, and trying to figure if the family was Jewish, the document said, in the race section, that she was British. From what I've seen in Sam's videos, U.S documents put up Jews as Hebrews in that section. Wasn't this relevant for the answer?

I just recently did my DNA test. I'm from Estonia, so the main groups were as I expected, as I don't know anyone in my family tree that is from outside Estonia. The results were as 86,4% Baltic; 12,7% Finnish and the rest 0,9% somehow is Iberian. Totally no clue on how that got in or from where. Also a genetic group, which wasn't included in the percentages, from the UK which was under "medium confidence". I was thinking myself that it might be Scottish mercanaries who were here during the Great Northern War, but I don't have any more info that that. But still that Ibearia with almost 1% is kinda mistifying.
