I'm Kenneth Edward Barnes and I'm an outdoor writer and author of many books of several genres. In the fall of 2019, Henry sent me their new Garden Gun and I tested it with several different shot shell loads and at several ranges. I also tested other smooth bore .22s and several .22s with riffling. I have an article about my results in my book "Barnestorming the Outdoors: Revised edition" on Amazon. I have used the little .22 shot shell since I was fourteen and that was in 1965. The CCI shot shell was the worse in pellet count and in pattering. The pellets in the shot shells from CCI are not uniform in size, some are number 12, but many others are even smaller and are size dust, which is the smallest size I know of. I tested the shot shells from Federal, Remington, Winchester, and one from Mexico.

I had a smooth bore bolt action single shot for rats... The pattern with these specific rounds was really random. Sometimes they were really clean like Buffalo showed. Sometimes the capsule stayed together and produced one hole. Weird. I prefer a really old Charter Arms .22 revolver, with worn out rifling. Great at 10 feet.

I think that’s a great idea but I think Henry should come out with a take down with two barrels one rifle and one non-rifle, I know Winchester used to make guns in multiple calibers like that same action just different barrels, I seen one that was at Winchester 1886 in 45-90 and then it had an extra barrel and 50-110

@gregorysloat4258
@gregorysloat4258 4 месяца назад
Those .22 shotshells are made for about 10 feet. If a snake is farther away than 10 feet, it’s not a threat. Additionally, these rounds are made to be shot through handguns. To that end, you’d have a lot better results with .38 Special, .44 Special, or .45 ACP shotshells. They have more, and bigger, pellets.

Birdshot in crimped cartridges is much more powerful than CCI’s capsulated. Crimped cartridges = Remington & Winchester. Now that said, CCI’s 22wmr or “Magnum”, has a lot of power, even out of a revolver. I’ve shot mice at close range with the 22wmr in a 5” barrel revolver and there wasn’t much left.

I’m curious too, but......Your closeup view of the barrel show the warning from Henry that this gun is for use with shotshells only. Give Henry a call before you try bullets in it. Perhaps there is a bore diameter constraint which could elevate pressure to unsafe levels.

Oh okay in the last shots I see the heavy wood grain. Looks like an old fence post. Somehow that’s appealing also. Lol

Very impressive Buffalo. Can the 22 smoothbore handle normal 22 bullets?. I appreciate that velocity and accuracy would suffer, but it might be handy out to 50 or so yards. Failing that it could be used to humanely dispatch a coyote or similar. In addition, was the little 9mm bolt action garden gun ever used in the US as it had limited popularity especially with kids in Britain. The ammo was dirt cheap compared with the 410 and like the 22 was good to 30 feet or so. Great video as usual.

It's not made for solids. There would be no stabilization whatsoever. Due to the overwhelming amount of comments that I have received wanting to see solids shot through it though I may give it a try and see just how bad it is. Thank you.

Maybe that Feller that did the song "I Don't Like Spiders and Snakes" needs that Garden gun! I like to use them shot shells in my lever gun for taking out wood bees in the spring back in the old tobacco barns. Oh yeah, and like always awesome video Buffalo thank you!

The garden gun is neat, just can't see spending money on it unless they come out with a take down with a rifled and smoothbore barrel. I've got a single shot Rossi .410 that kills snakes well with #9 bird shot. Lol looking forward to seeing the video where you shoot regular bullets through it. Thanks!

I have an old Savage Mark I bolt smoothbore. Sort of heavy. I think your Henry would be a lot more fun to cycle. I've tried the CCI shotshell. I get better results with the Winchester crimped shotshell. Don't even know if Winchester makes them anymore. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks.

I don't have any of the Winchesters but I have a couple of boxes of the Federal crimped style. They are substantially louder than the CCI, I don't know if they are loaded hotter or what. Thanks for the comment!

Strange, at 15 feet the pattern is way better than at 10 feet and at the same time it looks as the effective limit of those pellets.

Yes,..I was about to ask, how would the '22 cal Henry Shotgun handle the normal .22 ammunition? I like the looks of that smooth bore Garden Gun model! I got some useful information here,..I've always wondered how 'shot shells' worked in a rifled barrel, now I know. Thanks for doing this video Buffalo, I know it must have taken a fair bit of your time to make this, and I appreciate it.

It took me several hours at the range and a couple more to edit it together but I enjoy it. Glad you got some useful information from it. Also I had no intention of shooting any solids through but due to the volume of comments I got from this video it looks like I will have to at least shoot a few through it and post a video on how it does with them. Thanks for your comment, a lot of folks don't realize the time that goes into a video like this. You can see it was starting to get dim out in that last clip!

22Plinkster did a video with these where he compared the pattern of them out of from a long barrel to a like 1 inch barrel small snub nosed pistol and what was interesting was that the longer the barrel the more scattered the shot was. The 1 inch barrel had the tightest and best grouping. Not sure why, but I’m guessing that the rifling makes it scatter more.
