The original version of this part is iconic, but the 2024 version is impactful. I do like the echo effect from the original, however. Without being in an auditorium with LOUD bass, I can tell how loud this must be because of the effect. With the new version, unless you have some nice surround sound with a lot of bass, it doesn't have the same effect watching it on another device different from the theater.
@PapaDeusVult
@PapaDeusVult 2 месяца назад
That seems to be the consensus of everyone else who prefers the 2024 version: that it felt impactful because they watched it in the cinema. While there's nothing wrong with that, it feels a bit disingenuous simply because that particular effect of the movie seems to rely heavily on the hardware that an actual theater system is equipped with. I've said as much to my friends who've watched Dune: Part Two, but-in this particular case-I prefer the 'effect' added to Paul's "Silence!" in the 1984 version simply because it stands on its own without the need for bass booming from the speakers of a theater hall

The 1984 version was better, because he’s mentioning the Gom Jabbar, which basically equates to instant death. Also, his line about looking into that place you dare not look, you’ll find me staring back at you. That is massively important because it ties into him being the Kwisatz Haddarack (hopefully I spelled that correctly lol), not just the Lisan Al Gaieb. The 2024 version just has him as all business, telling them to be silent without really explaining why, beyond just the Reverend Mother stumbling backwards.
@NoCluYT

@@NoCluYT What good is it to tell your enemy to be silent, when they already know you have access to that power - the Voice? In 2024, it implies and shows that he has gotten stronger, but she already knew he had the Voice. On that info alone, she could guess that he has become her equal in terms of power, not surpassing her. But in the ‘84 version, when he said that line, and then said silence, that was him “flexing”, essentially saying I’m now stronger than you. And the speech wasn’t just for the Reverend Mother, that was also for the others present, including the Emperor.

Instead he fights him honorably in the fremen custom demonstrating he is of the fremens ways but also showing off that he is in fact not a GOD and can bleed like all the rest. I think everyone cracking jokes about the "lul cat noises" in the original misses something that makes that version more effective: it works in the 1984 version. In the 2024 version, he shouts and she recoils, then says "Abomination". In the 1984 version, those "cat noises"? Are frustrations of an angry Reverend Mother who can't make a verbal rebuttal, even when resisting. As much as I loved both movies, and as much as I enjoyed getting the chance to see both in cinemas, the original still stands out to me. In the 2024 version, the "SILENCE" BOOMS in the theater, but still sounds like an angry child. And that effect is only worsened on a home rewatch. In the 1984 version, it feels ethereal and authoritative, still booms through the speakers, and features that reverb, but that same feeling is felt in a home rewatch even without the bass the cinema would provide. So for me, the 1984 version still wins out. Not only for it's iconicness and its transition to home media, but due to the fact it actually *works* against the Reverend Mother.
@Hewkll
@Hewkll 14 дней назад
I think the actor plays a big part in how it is perceived: Timothy looks very young compared to the 1984 Kyle so his anger and dominance in the movie feels a bit weirder, more like an angry teenager like you said. The original has a bit more authority to him

@@sofianebessaha2351 I get your points, but abomination still doesn't quite fit the case. I think that just Denis trying to put as much "important quotes/phrases" from the book, without thinking first if it made sense or not. I mean, he himself has stated how little he cares about good dialogue

In the context of the film at least (it's been a while since I read the books), it's pretty clear that the Reverend Mother does not believe Paul to be the Kwisatz Haderach, his place within their plans was to be the final stepping stone for that being to emerge (and in a way that sort of what happens, depending on how you interpret the Kwizatz and the Golden path). The "Abomination" to me made sense as Paul should have never risen to that level of prescience and power. In the eyes of the Reverend Bother, he is simply an pawn that grew into something he was never meant to become, an incomplete Kwizatz if you will. If you read it as a quote from the book, it doesn't make much sense, but viewing the film as its own narrative the line works imo.

In the TV series, Mohiam didn't even have the guts to try to talk to Paul. She only whined and begged Paul's mother to do it: Mohiam: "Jessica! What have you done to us? Jessica, silence him!" Jessica: "Silence him yourself." It's a pretty creative take. But now I'm curious. How exactly Paul planned to stop the flow of Spice? It varied from sources to sources: in the 1984 movie, he didn't mention anything about it. In the TV series: Paul threatened to kill the entire population of Sandworm by water - killing the maker, stopping the spice (i like this one the most) In the New movie: nuclear option. How exactly he threatened to do it in the books?

Honestly, though the newer one is better produced, the Lynch one works better because of the context it adds to why Paul is so pissed at her. In the new movie I could barely remember who she was.

And she isn't supposed to call him an abomination, but DV seemingly forgot that Alia is supposed to be a young girl by this point. But hey, he completely forgot to include the entire Guild as well across both films.

Relying on the power of "Cinema speakers" in 2024 to measure the strength of a scene Vs the power of the 84's voice that you can easily feel even in your "Normal Home TV", well, hope u get that same cinema speakers effect at home then..

Maybe I'm weird but I like the 1984 scene better. Modern Dune is a better, more cohesive movie but there are several things I think 1984 did better and this scene is definitely one of them.

It's hilarious to me that people still keep defending a movie that the director says sucks and that it's one of the worst embarrassments of his life... He's on record... several times, saying himself that he "sold out" less than half way into it because the producers kept butting in and doing what they wanted to he's like eh, paycheck I guess... He will literally tell you to your face that he made a crappy movie and to go please watch the superior new one...
