This is an unauthorized re-issue of the album "Paul Desmond," Artists House, cat. # AH9402. The name of the album and the artwork have been changed, but it the same performances of the same songs in the same order as on AH9402.
This CD contains a complete set by Paul Desmond's so-called Canadian Quartet, recorded live at the Bourbon Street Club in Toronto. A series of performances at this club were recorded in 1975 and some of the music recorded has appeared on The Paul Desmond Quartet's "Live" and "Like Someone In Love" albums. This release marks the first time that this set has ever appeared on CD.
Highlights are one of only three existing recordings of "Audrey" in the altoist's discography (an homage to Audrey Hepburn co-composed by Desmond and Brubeck), and his only known reading of the standard "When Sunny Gets Blue."

What a great album. Ed Bickert on guitar is on point with his absolutely unique comping style and tasteful soloing. Fits Desmond's mellow and sensitive playing like a glove.

Ed and Paul's playing are so locked in! I've been listening to a lot of Paul with Jim Hall and those are amazing albums as well. Jazz guitar history is wonderful with both of them in it. I tend to lean more toward Ed's sound and playing.

Ed is great, his comping is out of this world, clearly his superpower. But I have to say Jim Hall’s guitar work with Desmond is unsurpassed. Every solo Jim takes is like a mini masterpiece.

Paul had the essence of eternity in his tone. I have been a keen jazz maniac for about 4 years now and I can recognise him listening to the first note plays. Simply the greatest to me.

Musically, pure bliss. This quartet was a tight unit with each musician really listening and communicating with each other. Thank you for sharing it. I’d encourage new Paul Desmond fans to get all his collaborations with Ed Bickert and Jim Hall.

Indeed! I’m sure you also have listened to Desmond’s collaborations with Jim Hall too. Love these recordings with Ed Bickert who passed in 2019. Cheers my jazz friend!

Man! I’ve been listening to Ed since I was 13 years old. I’m now 49. His playing is ever more interesting all these years later. Hands down, the single most important Jazz guitarist (to me) of all time. The greatest command of melody, harmony, and he swung like crazy. Thank you Ed! Oh: and Desmond was absolutely one of a kind too.

My dad took me to see Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass in the 80s and I fell in love with Ed's guitar tone, understated lines and completely intuitive comping. Later, I met a composer named Eddie Karam who told me about a studio session (maybe in the 70s) he was writing music for and he said Ed Bickert was the player on the session but couldn't read music at that time and so he wrote on a napkin the changes to the song so Ed could play along and that's how he got through the session. Ed Bickert has been my favorite hands down for years.
