Paul suffers from hearing loss due to the amount of gigs he has played.. Those particular headphones are Extreme Isolation ones, they significantly block external sound so he can keep his in ear levels lower. I'm actually wearing a pair right now :P... they work great..
Thank you for uploading this clip, I am a huge Paul Gilbert fan, he is a very emotive player and to cover one of my favourite Gary Moore songs as well as he has I say thanks Paul, Gary was one of my all time favourite guitarists and underrated I believe except by guitarists and my mum who has heard everything he has done over the years and enjoys listening to him(not bad for a 73 yr old lady), long my Gary live on in our memories, rip Mr Moore yn inspiration to all
Great tribute by one incredible guitarist to another.... Anyone watching this should consider themselves fortunate to have had the opportunity to do so.... Great job - a really great job by Paul Gilbert. He did an awesome version of a great song in honor of an incredible guitarist. i truly feel that Gary would be proud.... He's looking down and smiling..... May he RIP.
How can people say this has no feeling? Paul is one of the best at conveying emotion through his playing. That vibrato, escalating speed at the right places so it's not overdone, hitting powerful notes at the right times. Get over yourselves, "blues" players who think anything fast has no emotion.
One great guitarist paying respect to another. Paul took just enough liberty with the solos to put his own stamp on it but respected the original enough to not go off the rails. Great job
Alright Paul, he is such a good guy and has so much respect for other musicians in all area's if your just starting out or if he is jamming with other's. Thumb's up Paul for doing Gary's theme song, miss you Gary and so does so many in the industry. You live on forever Gary !
Glad you liked it. He is a guitar monster!! It is weird to hear a song like this, a cover of a tune you heard so many times by Moore, the original, sometimes seems to be better per se... But I like both versions. A lot...
I have like watched most of the existing covers on youtube of still got the blues ..and I always come back to this.. I have to say .. this is by far the best one sofar
+Flick Dasher i ve watched all billy's videos..im a big fan actually..but the thing is billy literally copies gary moore s licks..like all of them(he basically covers gary moore) but here u see paul's print..and thats the difference btw a cover and a tribute..
Their point was, Paul Gilbert is known as a guitar player not a singer. people do not go see him to hear him sing. He's doing something just to make it more entertaining. if you don't like it don't listen. why does everyone have to be so critical?? if Paul was in front of you, you would never tell him he couldn't sing. People hide behind a computer and become the all knowing authority. This is a FREE video.. Turn it off, don't criticize to make yourself feel better about your lack of ability.
Pauls exact comments in an interview were that at a NAMM jam session with like 6 other guitar players he couldn't tell what key the song was in so he leaned down towrd the P.A. speakers and that coupled with listening to the new Van Halen record with eddie at Ed'd 5150 studio with the monitors cranked wide open left him severely hearing impaired so now he takes no chances. He said they may not look cool but they protect him from future damage.
I agree with you all the way, people just do not get it but you, and Gary is smiling down on all who remember's him... Thank you for your comment, I hate people who compare other players, I read half of peoples comments on here they are so lame, and have no idea about the concept behind it.
They are isolation headphones. He gets no monitor signals what so ever. He has talked about this many times in interviews that has had dramatic hearing loss. One from a NAMM show another from listening to music at EVH studio with Eddie with the monitors cranked. Now he's forced to wear these or end up deaf!
Good job! There are a couple of times where he nearly "loses" it to shred, but kept nicely in check. PG is a god example of a shredder who doesn't completely ignore (or forget) about melody, taste and feel. Very good indeed!
I absolutely love Paul Gilbert and he's always been my favorite guitarist, but I agree with you. :P He might be on pitch but it takes more than that to sing.
paul gilbert is an amazing musician, and it says a lot about g moore that the "closet" gary moore fans in guitar star land pay tribute to him, this is a great version, paul doesn't have the range of mr moore, but he can sing. i personnaly loved gary moore playing, and was genuinely upset at his sudden demise, his tone was just huuuuggggeeee, his stinging leads awsome, his feel...well i really haven't heard anyone to compare! thanks for this paul(if you are reading this)...good job!
I've done this song and a couple of other Gary Moore songs on stage, and they're not easy. Gary was a really underrated singer. The guy must have gotten kicked in the nuts a lot as he hits some insanely high notes.
Wow Paul Gilbert really evolved to a great Allround guitarist within the Last 6 years Not many guitarists did that before him. Of course i could name a few but i simply just dont feel the need to
his vocals is not that bad. He is still in tune and he doesnt have to prove that he can sing the same as the GM version. I didnt even know Garry Moore before bec of PG I got to know him and he kick ass and a legend. Thanks to PG i got educated with history of blues R.I.P. GM and and your music will live in many more generation.
for y'all hating paul's performance here, check out his solo for 'while my guitar gently weeps.' and plz cut the crap about 'oh gary had feelings but paul didn't blah blah.' just enjoy the music. if u dont like it, go watch something else and dont ruin the experience for others who do like it
Paul always say that he just can't sing the very high parts but we should respect that he at least tries it. And besides of that he's not that bad as we would be singing :D
Man, I love Paul Gilbert, he´s one the greatest, no doubt, but the pace he set for the song kind of killed the song for me.. FOR ME, this kind of song should be played at a slower pace. When you do it faster, it kind of takes all the feeling out.. and that's what made Gary Moore what he is.. pure feeling and emotion.. and that's why Gary's interpretation won't be forgotten.. EVER..
This is not a floyd rose, but a classic tremolo. He just can turn down. Mr.Gilbert used the bridge of Andy Timmons signature model called "Wilkinson®-Gotoh® VSVG".
If paul gilbert played in a function group, maybe there's an argument for playing "in the style of" Gary Moore... He's not though, he's playing his own gig, and he's tributing Gary. The guitar melody/chord arrangement are the important parts, both played with great feel. The solo was improvised.. I'm sure Gary improvised the solo too (and i've heard him shred it). I've heard Gary's version, I want to hear what Paul would do, I found it pleasing enough (I'm not a complete elitist).
Eldon, I think you should read up on Paul Gilbert a bit before you make a comment like that. And, I really do not think your a fan of Gary's you may like his music but there is a big difference in being a loyal fan, Gary would of loved this. I been in the music industry for awhile now, and I know Paul is as so many other's are major fan's of Gary's . Every player has there own style, and there was only one Gary Moore, I would give this man and all the others who are keeping Gary's music alive.
He can sing just fine, it's out of his range. he would be the first to say he's not the worlds the greatest singer, when he writes his own material (solo stuff or the BV's for Mr Big) he can sing over it and do quite a good job.
I felt nothing while listening to this. This guy maybe have skill, but he surely don't know what blues is all about. His playing you just can hear, but the Gary's you can even feel!
