My tribute to a Movie legend, Paul Newman.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 26 1925. Kicked out of Ohio University at 25 for denting the college president's car with a beer keg, he joined the US Navy and was a radio operator during WW2.
During the early 1950s he had being doing stage work and guest TV spots. In 1953 he got a big break in a successful Broadway play called " Picnic". Through this play he met actress Joanne Woodward. Although they got on very well and there was a strong attraction between them, Newman was married and had just had his second child. He starred in "The Silver Chalice (1954)" and was so embarrassed by his performance he took out a full page ad in a trade paper apologizing to anyone who had seen the movie. In 1956, He got to redeem himself in the film world by portraying boxer Rocky Graziano. In 1957 he got to work with Joanne Woodward again and this time they knew they were meant to be together. They got married in 1958 and stayed married for the rest of his life. The 1960s were Newman became a superstar. He was nominated for 5 Oscars including one for Director. He struck up a great friendship with Robert Redford and appeared in 2 of the most popular movies of the 60s and 70s ( Butch Cassidy & THE Sundance Kid, The Sting). He turned down the role of Dirty Harry and recommended his friend Clint Eastwood for the role. He was Oscar nominated 3 more times in the 1980s. In 1987 he finally won his Oscar for Martin Scorsese's "The Color of Money" which he reprised his role as "Fast Eddie Felson" from the original movie "The Hustler".
He was a passionate race car driver and Co founder of Newman- Hass racing in 1982. He also founded " Newman's Own" a successful line of food products that has earned in excess of 100 million, and every penny is donated to charity. Paul Newman died of lung cancer in 2008 aged 83.
