Jeremy Paxman delves into the lives of Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward, and explores how they shaped Britain's view of the monarchy. Disclaimer: I do not own anything.
soilgrasswaterair. My grandparents are still alive at 93 and 96 years young, and 1 kid in 70’s, 1 almost 70. I Do know how rare and special it is to still have them in my life, I help take care of them with my mother. I get to see them everyday tell them I love you and give them hugs.
soilgrasswaterair, I never thought of that, but yes, how rare! I do wonder though if this is as good as a regular person would feel about it or somehow something very different.
Ursula Harvey That’s probably very individual no matter if a person is a royal or not. But positive or not depending on the family dynamic, it’s still rare for someone to have both their parents alive while they themselves are 70 years old.
I had doubts about Diana as to her genuineness but seeing her shake hands, sit next to and mix with Aids Patients has shown her to be a woman with a loving heart and not conquered by fear, prejudice or snobbery. Rest in peace dear Diana.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think that Diana was basically a good person, but definitely had a weakness, an addiction if you will to the spotlight and was determined to outshine every other royal, the Queen included. So I think that her so-called sincerity was largely for public consumption. However, I do get the impression that she was a generally loving mother who really cared about her children. That's something anyway.
@@richardmills1505 I think she cared but it was a bad life for her. The intense scrutiny had to be difficult. People in her past describe as genuinely compassionate as a youngster. Her and Charles were terribly mismatched. They were both too needy.
Yes but I also believe that she was not in harm's way at all. the people she shook hands with were carefully vetted you can be sure. And with that said though it was a great thing to see and make people realize that AIDS patients were human beings who needed compassion
I read in an older royal biography, I don't remember which one, that the first thing the Queen did when meeting baby Prince William for the first time was look right at his ears and say "thank goodness, he doesn't have Charles's ears!" 😂 Can't blame her, look at those things. 👂 Charles is better looking in his 70s than he was as a young man.
@@michelegraham9044 I guess it didn't bother them all that much..they had the money to get his ears pinned back..I would have gotten it done if I was him..he would have looked a little better..LOL.
when I first started paying attention to the royal family everything was negative about Prince Charles so I had a poor judgment of him overtime I've seen more and more documentaries of him or rather films of him visiting other countries and he's not a bad guy. He was pushed into that marriage and really did not know how to handle a young woman who needed him emotionally
One wants something more from a king, though than "not a bad guy". We'll see. He might be fine, especially if he keeps his nose out of government legislation.
After watching The Crown I began to feel sorry for him and, much like Margaret was deeply in love with Peter Townsend, so Charles has his heart set on Camilla.
seems like all the royals are good looking in their teenage years then take a nose dive. Prince william's change was the most drastic. He was actually handsome when he was younger
I love the Investiture Ceremony; although I was born in 1982, I've watched the full film. I think it should certainly be adapted for Prince William when his time comes.
Why in the world do people feel like the royal family are such failures just because they can’t keep a marriage together? The people judging them have no problem with themselves having failed marriages or failed marriages in their family. Why does everyone feel so betrayed by the royal family for not saying they are having marital problems? Regular people wouldn’t tell the world all that happens in their own marriages. Nor does anybody want to say their marriage is failing when they are trying to work it out. When your in that situation you don’t go announcing to everyone that “oh it looks like there’s a chance we might get divorced in a few years”. And good gracious with the divorce rate so high among people why are the royal held to a higher standard then regular people are held. It’s not like being divorced means your a bad person or that you don’t have morals. If they were stealing or committing violent crimes then yes, that reflects what kind of person there are. Honestly, how they go about their relationships really isn’t anybody’s business. I don’t even understand why people even care about other people’s problems. Worry about your own life. If the royal family just sat on their butts all day and didn’t do any of the work they do then that’s something for the public to get upset about. All people should care about is how well they do their jobs and how well they reflect Britain. And failed relationships are common all over the globe so that doesn’t make England look bad.
Katie Kat, Well said, it just shows they’re human like everybody else. The Royal Family has a strong sense of duty to the monarchy and try to keep public duties separate from their private lives. If only the media would respect their need for privacy and stop creating speculation and narratives which are often untrue and do a lot of damage.
If you have a monarch led by a humble leader who gives up themselves to lead and represent their counties: i.e. QEII's example, then having a monarch is a joy and gift, in my opinion.
@@elizabethdyer8937 Most people don't know anything about Royals and God.God anoints his choosen monarch as per The Bible. He anointed king saul, king David, king Solomon .And God's prophets bowed down in front of these kings. people who dont know what's in Bible and judging kings and queens.Read old testament first.
The QUEEN SHOWED EXCELLANT COMPOSURE TO HER CHILDRENS BEHAVIOR. HOWEVER, SHE NEVER SKIPPED A BEAT TO REIGN BEAUTIFULLY THROUGH IT ALL AND I ADMIRE HER BEYOND RESPECT. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL LADY.
At about 5:17 begins the music... which was also the theme for an early American radio program called "The Couple Next Door". Very interesting choice, considering the theme of the documentary was to show the royal family as just 'normal' like the rest of us.
Body and Mind Vibrational Energy why do they get all the privilege by accident of birth if we are all the same? You appear to be missing a rational conclusion
@@L-mo I'm saying we're all human, not that they should have more privilege than us. In fact, I don't believe there should be a "royal family" It's detrimental to the whole of society. When you have one family that is so wealthy and is paraded around like they are above and beyond everyone else, riding around in gold carriages, waving at us from behind a barrier is absurd. But they are just as human as you and I. They keep the system set up this way to keep us down. To think there is a range of classes. But you don't have to keep that mindset and you shouldn't. But one thing you have an advantage over them, is you have more freedom than they do. I prefer it that way. I would never want to be a part of them. But in the end, they are human and they make mistakes too. They are not above making mistakes, that's what I was trying to say
So why is everyone else held to a different standard than them? If THEY do it, it's okay! But God forbid anyone ELSE do I it! What a double standard, two edged sword, blah, blah, blah bunch of stupid reasons to pay billions to a monarch that does nothing.
Some Soaper it’s really not...most Americans are obsessed with the British royalty, hence our obsessions with their weddings, etc. it’s not our tax money funding their lifestyle, we just get to enjoy them from a distance. This isn’t one of those “not like other girls” things though.
Kirsten S. That’s actually not at all why I would consider myself a monarchist. It has absolutely nothing to do with an American’s casual interest in the day to day lives of the royal family. I believe a constitutional monarchy is preferable to having a republic and certainly better than pure democracy. Transfer of power tends to be smoother for hundreds of years and national stability is ensured longer than with other forms of government. I would actually prefer a constitutional monarchy granting basic rights but leaving majority of control in the hands of the king and/or queen. I think you deeply misunderstood my interest and your “not like other girls” comment seems to indicate that is some sort of sore spot for you. Go off, I guess.
Some I agree with u too a certain extent but think it best to elect officials cuz heaven help the us if it had the trumps or someone like them as royals!u have to trust royals which is something americans will never do!
@@Kirsten_is_cursed10 it costs the British tax payer around £7 each year for the Royal family’s civil list funding which is nothing compared to the money they bring in from tourism. Don’t be so ignorant and stupid
Wow I feel kinda bad for a Charles. Maybe if they’ve been more careful with him, maybe he wouldn’t have turned into such a prick. But maybe because of his experience his children had a more normal and free life than him.
2/13/20....THIS WAS WHEN LONDON/THE UK RULED THE MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT WORLD! TWIGGY... TOM JONES...THE BEATLES...even before Elton John......All the girls in minis & white go-go 👢 boots.....the fashion.....the movies....the 🎶 music.
If you look at pics of Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, she and Zara Phillips are the exact spitting image of each other.
They could be in a commercial for male pattern balding. At least they all just accepted it instead of wearing bad toupees or hair plugs. Even Wills was balding in his 20s!! I used to love Prince Andy with Fergie, they seemed so funny and in love. Turns out he was a big egomaniac, and left her alone while pregnant twice and pretty much turned his back on her. They are still friends now though. She big time had his back with that whole scandal. Poor Fergie, the media killed her self esteem. I dunno why the media are so hard on some of the royals and others they dont bother.
I feel like HMTQ wanted to be with all of her children all of the time but HMTQ has ALWAYS been at work. It's like The Queen NEVER has gotten to "clock-out" & go home & be her true self.
I met Prince Charles once at Royal Ascot in the Royal Enclosure. It did NOT go well but I’m sure he remembers me. See, I had been drinking champers most of the day and had recently finished some hors d'oeuvres. Well he ends up making over to me and my friend that is an acquaintance of his. I was so ready for my curtsy. Then he reached us, said hello, I go down for a deep curtsy. That and the all day bubbly and food did NOT mix. I let go one of those farts you have no control over! It was mortifying. My face went red and all I wanted to do was run away. Prince Charles acted like he didn’t hear my wind and kept talking to my friend! He truly saved me from my own embarrassment. Since then I’ve always taken up for him but you know he tells people that story!!!
They have done so much good for the country.....from the shambles of world war 2 to what it is today.....amazing ............they deserve more respect & gratitude from its people ,than what they are being meted out with, .........in my eyes, U.K.is one if the most organized countries in the world......but the youngsters must be encouraged to qualify professionally, with education insurance being made mandatory for every child in the country.....
Kings, queens, dictators and presidents are military structures...the horses, the cavalry and the swords are all military symbols...power structures...human cultures everywhere have power structures...the difference is how the society under each power structure survives or deteriorates...the difference shows you the level of intelligence of the reigning power structure...
Anne is the hardest working Royal and is a very kind person. I had the pleasure of meeting her many years ago at a horse charity and she was charming and very humble.
That 14 year old singing to prince Andrew is beyond creepy , especially in light of all the pedo stuff that has come out recently about him🤔 but he was cute
I adore anything British/ Royal family. Riveting! Come long way modernizing the monarchy and their family. I respect the queen very much! Being American we don't have Royals. ( closest family we had was probably the Kennedy's) The queen is actually " THE ACCIDENTAL QUEEN ". I've learned so much from these documentaries. 👸🤴
Interesting watch now after the Epstein scandal...... came here after watching prince Andrews interview..... the crown on Netflix next and I’m British....... 👍👍🙌🙌🇬🇧🇬🇧
Jules France I've been watching little bits on the whole Epstein situation for months, but not following it closely. I'm literally finding out today that Prince Andrew us caught in it somehow! I had no idea....
It is rumored, CHILDREN Research, KAMPLOON, CANADA, Where 10 orphaned, Indigenous children, were taken out by lizzie& Phil, The children, Never seen again!!& may I add, Ladies err, "What "ladies"?
When I see Diana & Charles, the vivid memory of the marriage he dishonoured from the start, with Charles screwing around with Camilla with zero care. He was a heartless & selfish husband.
The way Prince Charles refers to the Queen as your majesty, mummy really cracks me up... I suppose that even if the Queen just happens to be your mum as well, as her child you stillhave to address her in the correct respectful manner. But then he adds the "mummy" bit... Wouldn't every youngmother with screaming young kids or rebellious teenage ones love to have such maternal power and authority and say to them: I'm the Queenof this family and, to you, I am "Your majesty". So mow do as you're told, go clean up your room and don't call me mummy, because I cannot believe I produced something like you! A bit of respect, please!"
The Princess Royal must get the last laugh in. Her children are gorgeous. She has been subjected to criticisms about her looks but then her children are fabulous.
@@icbaicba7765 is it true? Was Princess Anne subjected to criticism? But she was so pretty when she was young... And her children are also good looking
Jum Doop Apparently they cost the UK taxpayer £1.24 each last year. The sums are broken down in this Sky News article. www.google.ie/amp/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/the-royal-accounts-this-is-why-the-monarchy-cost-41-more-last-year-11748503
laduchesse Many thanks. Given that these costs encompass an entire extended family and their offspring - I mean issue - one wonders whether all this is worth it in the 21st century.
The £85 million a year doesnt include security which is high enough to cause consternation when it comes to some royals. Andrew wanted millions to cover Eugenie's gap year abroad and everyone screams about Harry needing to pay for his own since he's not a working royal.
@@L-mo & not to continue being mean spirited ....but who in the world would want to be them? They seemed psychologically damaged & emotionally arrested god bless them.

They want to say Harry isn’t Charles’. Look at his younger brother. I thought it was Harry at first glance but it’s Charles’ younger brother. A picture is worth a thousand words.
I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️ why this still exists they are normal people like anyone else , just shows how the people in the past had a fascination for money power and class
2/13/20....They still do. Look @ all the press & today's internet "coverage" of Harry & MeAgain/MeGain with their engagement/living together/royal 💒 wedding/Frogmore rehab/👶 baby pregnancy & birth & christening/Megxit/secrecy & being advocates of "progressive" NWO/UN/ELITE/GLOBALIST 2030 agenda/global warming/carbon footprint even tho UK Royals are NOT supposed ti be political. Meantime ALL expenses are paid for by the hard-working Brit taxpayers as the Royals "perform their Royal duties" & live a luxurious lifestyle @ taxpayers' expense! If I were a Brit, I would not only be very interested in the Royals & their lives, I would be 👀 watching & counting every £ of taxpayers' hard earned funds!
I still don't understand people who support the monarchy. Just think of all the money the country would save. They have vast fortunes of their own. Not to mention all the extremely questionable activity associated with them.
Savannah Sputnik you’re wrong I live in a Republic and as many republics the amount spend is higher than in monarchies, also monarchies attract a lot of turists.
Savannah Sputnik royals may also serve as a role model and teach discipline and respect to all the people in their country. And as you can see, london is stable, because it is well managed by the monarch. The main point why they are there is to serve, and not just to take taxes... and british people support it ever since, so you don’t have anything to do with it. It’s their culture.
Bianca Manalili Being pedophiles is their “ culture”??? Are you kidding me?. You think London is stable, With all the knife stabbing’s, no go zones, and trouble they have there on a daily basis? And Mayor Kahn, I suppose you think he’s just great. I do believe you’re an idiot. So glad we had a revolution and got away from you freaks.
You have to chill. The previous royals including Queen Elizabeth lived in the World War era. Basically England was superior because of the monarchy has been respected ever since. That’s why we support the royal family, just to appreciate the previous/ late royal family. If you’re from England, you must be grateful. Even I respect my country’s monarchy.
Is the Queen’s marriage the only one that didn’t have affairs? All the kings and queens before her had mistresses and affairs; and all of her kids had affairs and divorces...
King George III didn’t have any. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert didn’t either. And who’s to say that the Queens marriage didn’t have any affairs. Not by her though.
