Zenperial I would advise people who believe and act on this to be very, very careful. People looking to cash in on the global panic are being meet with not just social but legal consequences for profiteering. There are many ways to make money when the market is in a free fall, and this is when our nation’s devotion to capitalism should be both encouraged and regulated. Creating new products in the face of this virus, taking out a business loan when the government hands over billions to banks to help small businesses, buying premium stocks that were panic sold, buying up a small business at rock bottom price because they could not recoup losses ? This is good/acceptable capitalism. Hoarding and/or selling necessities at gouging prices? This is profiteering and should be punished to the full extent of the law in a time when life is so uncertain.

I know those articles saying that the data was there and all this but the reality is 90 times in the past when infectious diseases have popped up they have gone away very quickly or just wound up not really affecting the United States. I think we were partially as a country to victims of complacency in assuming but this was just going to pass us by I mean I work in the medical field and I have had to re-evaluate on an ongoing basis myself. There was a time in mid to late January where we thought the estimate of 1% to 1 and a half percent mortality rate might have been conflated. and we were postulating the likelihood that this thing was going to wind up being far less contagious and not nearly as big of a deal as we were hearing from China. @SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 4 года назад
@Curt Christensen It depends how much you've got and how secure your job is. The goal is to have no debt, but if you've already got debt because of poor decisions, it's probably wise to pay something closer to the minimum so that you can stockpile money to keep making payments even if one does lose one's job. Obviously, it's not ideal, but it beats defaulting on debt or going bankrupt.

I told my client, pay the minimums, continue to add to their pile of cash if possible so they'd have it if they needed it and once the situation clears up in our country they could then pay off everything completely. My buddy thought I was insane when I told him I was storing up necessities for a few years by then for a rainy day. I tried to tell him to see it as another way to invest savings. I told him things seem ok but you will never know when I could turn bad. Sad really. Hopefully the lessons we learn will be to instill in future generations the need to buy and physically own goods that we will need in the hard times. I am not negging Dave’s program but people are silly enough they need to have their hands held on the way to the store and instructed by a authority figure to prep for disaster. Pay off debt FIRST, if you can. If you can do both - pay off debt and save, then better. Paying off your debt. is about your good name. If you don't pay off your debts, then others will think of you as someone they cannot trust. If you are over your head during this time, during this CV, then talk to your creditors, and pay what you can to them, as THEY gave YOU money to have what you have. Your creditors most likely are having financial issues during this time too!

I paid off and down a lot of things and had money put away. I feel confident. 1 thing I paid off was my care credit card in case of medical emergency. And put something on my credit card to lower my payment. I have a solid fund.

Hold on to what you have and hold off on paying your debt.

TIMELY DISCUSSION: My husband and I have been paying off our condo mortgage by putting extra cash on our condo principal. And we decided to stop paying this extra during the Pandemic to keep enough extra cash in our savings accounts BUT decided to stop the extra going on the mortgage. I made this decision to be "on the safe side" in the short term. My condo mortgage payment costs $800.00 per month - $300.00 of that goes on the principal and $500.00 foes on the interest (at 3.5 percent.) We are positioned such that the probability of my husband being laid off is very slim. I did not know about the "pause" option so this program was very helpful to me. Thank you.

Dave has become a millionaire teaching people common sense. It’s amazing. No one ever went broke underestimating the stupidity of the American public. I can’t believe someone needs to be told this.

Was the question really that dumb? We went from being told to pay off our debts asap to maximizing savings in a matter of days

And everyone that listened to him and helped create the index fund bubble threw their money into a FI/RE while smart people cashed out. Smart people took on as much debt as possible.
