If you are trying to repair your hard drive by swapping the PCB, this video shows you why that may not work.

Hard drive controller boards store unique adaptive data that cannot be transferred from one drive to another. You typically either have to repair the PCB or have a means of reprogramming a replacement PCB. If your drive is clicking, you most likely have a physical problem.

Thanks for the demonstration and obvious problem. But the burning question is - HOW do you make it work then? HOW do you transfer the BIOS data from the bad drive to the new one and another PCB?

Thank you, pretty much answered my question

pardon me but the drives are made about a year apart, yes the same firmware but if the numbers for headstack , actuator, and so on were the same (I think they are the dcm #) if the drive did come off the assembly line next in order, might it have worked ? I understood what you said at the beginning about each being an individual , but I've read of getting 75% back, which sometimes is ok.

hello. what if i want to replace my pcb only because the pins on my sata cable are messed up? would it still not be possible?

Couldn't you get the same pcb board and swap the chips from the bad board to the good board and put that pcb in the failed drive?

+CaptHwdy08 Yes, on some of them you can. However, the average user is not going to do that on a fine pitch chip, or a BGA chip. For us, it's easier just to reprogram the adaptives from one board to another.

I was encouraged to see that this can be done. However, my local shop is telling me that on my WD 12 TB MyBook (Helium Drive) which stopped spinning and makes no noise at all, that there are multiple chips to be swapped and the estimate is between $900-1800. I've already ordered a donor. (Western Digital WD120EDAZ-11F3RA0 12TB PN:2W10322 US7SAM120 Hard Drive IU HA500). Have you ever done the needed donor swaps on this one?
