Easy Data Recovery On A Seagate Hard Drive With A Dead PCB

This is a quick DIY data recovery example if you have a dead controller board. Sometimes when a hard drive cannot power up, it is due to the PCB having a short.
This is not recommended in cases when the data is critical, and is only intended in situations where it would be nice to get the data back.
This is a common issue on Seagate, Western Digital, and Hitachi hard drives.

Thx, you are my hero! I removed the diode with pliers and now my dead seagate barracuda 😄backup drive works as before! But I understand that its life now hangs on a thread so I will do another backup.

Actually, is replacing the board without the bios results in the drive being not able to read a single sector (reporting sector unreadable) or is there something worse in my case? I have a Seagate barracuda 1er164-302

Great video, thanks .. I have a Seagate Barracuda 1TB external drive that won’t power on ... any idea for an easy fix on this would be appreciated. The drive was dropped only a few inches so I’m hoping it can be fixed. Thank you.

very nice video! I've learned what TVS diodes are ... and have found the 5v one completely short on my 3TB Barracuda -- nice! I bought a time capsule with a defective drive so, for sure didn't care if I made the problem worse. One question though ... outside the super infrequent mains transients and so ... there shouldn't be any other reason for this part? Right?

my hard drive is not seen by the computer but the motor spins. do you think a board swap would work?(2011 hdd) also do you think the heads in the drive would need to be replaced?

Blew a couple 8TB HDDs while installing a new PSU, didn’t swap out the modular cables and expected it to work. Any suggestions for how to remove the diode without the hot air soldering tool? Can I use a normal electrical soldering iron to heat up the connections?

I have a seagate 7200.9 that does not spin as well. I checked the TVS diode and it reads fine. It's not blown or shorted. What now?

I've had 2 hard drives fail this year, a Seagate and a Hitachi. I only need it to run long enough to copy my files to a flash drive, so this method will hopefully work for the Seagate. The Hitachi, on the other hand, clicks and thats it. On top of that, the data is encrypted by GandCrab 5.2. Any ideas for that?

Hope this isn't a stupid question (I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to tech), but is this for problems with external hard drives? My computer stopped recognizing mine (1TB Seagate) over the summer (light still came on and made noise, though) The person I sent it to says he's narrowed the problem down to the PCB and that he's going to replace it in hopes to fix the issue. Didn't want to bother him too much right now since we're both busy and the time difference is an issue (I'm out of the country), so I found this video and was just wondering if the was for external hard drives. Thank you.

ever had a drive come in that someone had hooked up to a molex to sata adapter and the adapter failed and caught fire and damaged the PCB? I've had a few like that, one of them stopped spinning up but later worked just fine until it actually died (no spin no nothing). it was a 1TB 7200.12 seagate.
@acsdata
@acsdata 5 лет назад
We get drives that have been blown out due to voltage issues quite often. Hooking up the wrong voltage adapter, surges, etc. It's not uncommon for them to knock the preamp out on the heads as well if the extra voltage isn't suppressed properly.

Is it possible just to replace the TVS diode? Standardized surface mount TVS diodes are available from many sources. Sorry about commenting months after video was posted, but thanks in advance if you choose to respond despite that.
@acsdata
@acsdata 5 лет назад
Absolutely. If the TVS is the problem, you can sometimes pull it from a working PCB. It's easier to just use a working PCB and program it with the adaptives. That way if there was some underlying electrical problem in the original PCB, you won't run the risk of making a small problem even bigger.

I was playing a game the other day and my drive died and crashed my game. No warning or anything. It was my second drive so my OS is fine. But all my games and other files I can't remember are on that drive. Do you think this could help?
@acsdata

Depends on what the problem actually is.
@leotheevinci
@leotheevinci 4 года назад
My question is that, how can we copy that so called "adaptive data" to a new PCB board?
@viper1431
@viper1431 3 года назад
By taking the bios off the old pcb and soldering it onto the new one. But that's assuming the problem wasn't caused by a dead bios IC or corrupted data in it.

There are some DOS-based data recovery programs, still being sold today, which claim to "refresh" or "remagnetise" the surfaces and recover data. You may have to change a BIOS setting from "AHCI" to "IDE" temporarily, before running them. Can software really correct "bad" magnetic surfaces in hard drives and get data back or are these programs just snake oil?
@acsdata
@acsdata 5 лет назад
Those are bogus in every way possible. Software cannot physically alter the state of a hard drive or it's components, except for the fact that some software can make the situation infinitely worse. If you have heads that are failing, you can actually exacerbate the problem by forcing the drive to try and read sectors.

Man, i just found this video, i gotta ask you something that happened few days ago, The PCB from my Western digital 320Gb burned, i taked the pcb off from the hard disk and i saw that a chip with name SMOOTH is fried. Is there any chances if i find a PCB of the same hard disk, that chip could be replaced and maybe work again? Or what should i do? i mean i will not use it anymore, just wanna recover all my data and transfer it to another hard drive!. Hope u see this, to get an asnwer, i have some importart stuff inside that disk :(
@DJtheone
@DJtheone Год назад
It will work mostly, but rather than replacing the SMOOTH chip, if the donor board is good, just take out the bios from your own board, and replace it on the donor board. Then use the donor board on your hdd. Caution: Works only when both the boards have same serial number
@Metarex10
@Metarex10 Год назад
@@DJtheone Thats what i needed to know, if it works replacing the chip!! Anyways this is more complicated than I thought, I've been looking for a board just like mine but I haven't found it, I'll keep looking, if i do, i'll do what u told me, but I think it's easier to find the SMOOTH chip than to get a board just like mine lol anyway i will try to find it, i still need to recover data from that hard drive. Thank you for replying.

@@Metarex10 Best of luck mate. You can find most of the boards on Aliexpress although the wait time is usually in months sometimes. If you have the necessary equipments to change the SMOOTH chip, my guess is you can give it a try as well
