Thanks Ben. Great spotlight on an underappreciated series. Funny you should diss the Rhode Island commem as I just purchased one in an NGC fatty with a gold CAC at the San Francisco coin show last Saturday. I also just purchased a Maine commem with a gold CAC from APMEX on Monday. Obviously, I’ve taken a liking to commems!

Hi, Ben. I like the Monroe reverse. I love the early commems. The Oregon is definitely my fav. Too bad so many of those coins were called cleaned. Thanks. *TYU*

I’ve been working on a Dansco album of classic commemorative coins for many years. Very cool collection your customer has. Thanks for sharing.
@montanaguy

Sometimes you can by the ones that are certified 'Cleaned Unc Details' for little money and crack them out to put into your album. If there were no discernible 'cleaned' evidence they would be a solid strike coin with original surfaces.

Those coins to me had been dipped in the past. It's that dulled look that the cleaning solution affected. Maybe it was dipped for too long, or not rinsed well. The Columbia SC originally were in a three mint holder set that had a bullseye style paper covers that held them in the card stock. So a lot of them had a funky bullseye type of tone on the obverse.
@montanaguy
@montanaguy Год назад
That 'funky bullseye' tone is what is called tab toning and is a process created by the original tab type holders in which they were shipped to the customer when first purchased. Even these older holders are seen sold now and again, and at a premium.

The 1892-1954 commemorative coins are my new favorite set to try to collect. Lots of interesting characters involved in the commissions of them also. Just a money grab for some years.

When collecting commemorative for the last couple years and I've been lucky to come across some good ones. Gave up the less expensive ones learning from collecting my Morgan dollars I'm going for the harder ones to come by first. 😊👍 Last one I've gotten was the Gettysburg in a mintstate 65.

1892 Columbian NGC MS64 PL, first certified coin I ever purchased. I have mixed feelings about it because I bought when I was young based on centennial hype and paid accordingly. Good lesson for my future dealings. After keeping the coin in cold storage for many years, I sold it at auction. I think that experience irrationally cooled me about commems in general. Ever since, I've stayed with normal issue coinage.

I love commemoratives, i found quite a few coin roll hunting, the best was a 1954 carver/Washington in AU or close to MS details. It ain’t worth much but the story is priceless.

I think your customer got taken to the cleaners on some of those coins. Time for a crack out challenge. That Iowa coin is a ms67 all day long, I have seen several of them just like that here in Iowa.

Great lineup of commems. Mind boggling on the QC and Cleanings On a few of these. One reason I don’t waste my time trying to get so in depth on learning to grade because I always seem to get shutdown! Haha

Nice collection of commemoratives. I think the grading services are using the term cleaned way too liberally when they are not sure of what caused the hairline scratches. The design of the Oregon Trail is my favorite

Great vlog, as usual from Ben. I was thinking the light spot at 9 o'clock on the Iowa obverse was a deciding factor on the questionable color tag... Nice grades on the Oregon Trails and Maryland. Live and learn!

Looks like the good graders already jumped ship and are off to CAC. That Iowa especially kills me. I've seen so many Iowas tone that way. Just sad.

The Carter Glass and Sesqui may have some PVC. They have that green-to-brown toning that almost looks like camoflage especially through the loupe. They might clean up really well. I'd look very carefully at the occasional black dots and dark spots shmattered here and there to make sure they don't look dark green anywhere.

The contrast in the intricacy of the design of the Iowa and Rhode Island coins is striking. The RI looks like something that a 4th grade class project came up with.

I recently purchased a columbian half dollar graded MS63 by PCGS and it as hairlines on it, not like it was cleaned but looked like it was improperly handled or stored lol but it makes me question when they deem cleaned or not when it comes to hairlines.

Hey Ben, can you touch on this. Was there ever a period of time when cleaning a coin with an abrasive brush was the "standard" and "accepted" thing to do? If so, why?

It really irks me to see unc details on a nice coin. They toss that term about for the most absurd crap. These were coins, they traveled and have seen a lot. They should have to be damn sure it's cleaning to mark it so. Even hair lines do not mean cleaning automatically, nor dark spots in luster. I can put dark spots on a coin just from pawing at it a bit and tumbling over my fingers. I wouldn't be shocked if they got it wrong 20% of the time or more.

all this episode told me was not to ever buy raw coins. no wonder some dealers don't like TPG's. now it's tougher for them to pass off their problem coins. hopefully this guy did not spend a lot on these coins.

I would prefer AU vs UNC. DETAILS. Cleaned coins are so disrespected that it would be better if not graded. Why collectors put up with this Gestapo-like tyranny is baffling. The inconsistent nature of Cleaned vs MSxx needs no further elaboration.

Ben's remark about having coins graded that resided in an album with plastic slide in/slide out windows that can mark mint state coins is very revealing.
