The excuse given is that they've become such gourmets that they can't stand to eat any rocks of lower quality than the top sirloin rocks of Dodongo's Cavern, but such an excuse runs counter to their starvation problem. If a rich snob who's gone his whole life knowing nothing but the most expensive of tastes upon his tongue goes for long enough without food, he won't care. If he can't get the fare he's used to, he'll adapt even if the time before then is a bunch of entitled whining about how he needs his 5A wagyu steak with caviar and gold leaf cake. The only real answer to this question is 'the goron's need to need help to frame the excursion to Dodongo's Cavern as something more than pointless dungeon crawling, and what else could a tribe of rock-eating rock people who just sit around all day need help with?.' Of course we know a second answer to this question comes up later, but obviously that can't be the _only_ problem.

A theory many have put forth (which makes a lot better sense than the in-game explanation of "we can only eat the tastiest rocks and would rather starve than eat anything less delicious") is that they _can't_ eat just any rocks. Think of it from the opposite perspective: a human settlement starving because all that's around is like... grass and poison ivy. Some other race comes up and is like "wait but you guys eat plants, why can't you just eat all these plants?"
