Was also used by American forces during the War if 1812. The typical range for engagement then was about 40 yards so, the spread of the buck and ball could, in theory, hit several people....considering they literally stood shoulder to shoulder.

@@hardtack8776 grapeshot was a cannon fired charge used by the Navies. Sack of powder was nailed or tied to a wood plug which had a sack of bound steel balls nailed or tied to the other side. Substitute the sack of balls for a thin walled "can" and you have the artillery's version called "cannister".

@@jodyethridge7576 Quite aware of that Jody, but many people referred to “buck and ball” as “grape shot” as well as carried over from the use by the Navy, etc. I’ve heard many folks knowledgeable about history refer to it as such going back over 50 years.

@@SR-wz2iv when the projectile hits and flies off in a way that it's imbalanced. The lead deforms on impact, ricichets off, and spins at super high rpm creating the prrrrrrewwwwwmmm sound.

Sounds a lot different when it is a ricochet coming towards you.

This round is definitely a destroyer if you have an auto. Its amazing to lay down a few rounds back to back. You see why this matters for defense when successive shots are layed down.

My old field Pard has a wife who has a bunch of Older than Female Friends . These gals are close to 70 and went out and bought 12 ga for home defense Ha ha . My Pard takes his harem to the indoor commercial Range where Slugs only are allowed , no Shot . The recoil is beating these old Gals to death , but They Like it ? I went in my stash and got a Box from about 2005 vintage of reduced recoil Slugs . I doubt it has been a catalog item for years ? Chuck is dead He is not coming and these are left over Slugs from his last years of Hunting . Dad used 12 gauge Sluggers from Remington for decades . They were 1600 fps Max loads 1 once , similar to my trusty Winchesters . He was full of Arthritis and he loved the low recoil Slugs and I got 3 more Seasons out of him before he quit Hunting . RR12-RS - 5pk is the part number , 3 dram Eq and the Box Claims 43 % less recoil . After my Pard told me that his Wife and her Girl friends probably should not shoot 20 ga slugs I started looking for s Spare Box of these lower recoil Slugs . Of course i had to wipe the Tears of Laughter from my Eyes first . Perhaps you have more info on a Modern loading similar to the 2005 vintage ammo for Jeff"s Viewers who are new Shotgun owners . Its all up to you Mr Slug Guru .

They also make a segmented slug, which I prefer. It stays together down range but breaks into 3 chunks in the target, which seems like the best of both worlds to me.

Because if you aim for a leg, you may need shot! Just if you miss, why not have both! The slug worked fine, and you had the additional damage. We all miss on occasion!

It's 3 plated disc's and a bunch of small pellets. Beyond point blank the birdshot go everywhere. Granted I have the 2" barrel version.

A circuit judge will throw a 16-inch pattern at 10 feet with a 3-inch pattern for the pucks.

Try doing airsoft with an airsoft shotgun against guys with airsoft AR's. You'll realize very fast why AR's are superior home defense firearms. If you miss with the first shot, by the time you rack in a shell and fire, the other guy already will have shot at you (and likely hit you) five times. You also can't engage multiple targets as fast as with an AR.

Let's get back on track: Your AR won't mind. AR's know what they have to offer. You may go out and squeeze other triggers, but that sweet gentle recoil will have you back for more.

It does work exactly like they claim. The problem with these is the combined weight of all the projectiles. It's a pretty heavy load. In order to make the recoil tolerable they reduced the powder load so the velocity and overall energy is less than if one just shot buckshot or just shot a slug.
