This is part two of a 3 part series, I was supposed to make it just two videos, but after thinking about it - putting these parts together would be close to an hour or so, so I decided to just split them up so the next one would be only talking about the math behind the drag and how to maximize it for your use. In this video, I talk about the relationship of the diameter of your line to your reel - the difference between lines that use the PE system and the LB breaking strain. I know there is a lot of confusion on this topic, so I try to simplify it as much as I can to make it easier to understand and the relationship of the diameter of your line to how your reel acts as you cast or drop your line to the depth you are fishing or how far you're casting. There is a relationship between the diameter you are using and the drag, I explain this in the video.

certainly is a mine field when it comes to braid Kit.I just dont know what to believe or understand PE numbers ect.Its crying out for a world standard braid reading thats easy to understand.I must admit at just buying a braid that matches the reel and hoping that its right.As you say.Very confusing and the manufactors are not helping things.Im still confused.lol

Steve, I feel you. If you buy Japanese gear though, they have it pretty straight - western versions...it's very difficult to navigate. :( but yes, a world standard would be helpful most def.

Steve, to understand the Japanese fishing line SIZE System, check out the Info page and charts at www.varivas.fishing/japanese-fishing-line-size/ When comparing USDM (U.S. Domestic Market) fishing line with JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) line, its best to 1st compare their diameters. Once you've identified a USDM and JDM line with the same diameter, then compare the break strength of each. Be careful though. The break strength listed on the package of JDM fishing line usually means that this is the maximum break strength for that line. In other words the line will break at or below the kg/lb indicated on the package. Because there is no standardized measuring system for USDM fishing line, the weight indicated on the package is not a true indicator, as most USDM fishing line breaks well ABOVE the kg/lb indicated on the package.

@@TheFishingKit The International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) has developed a standard fishing line size system. If an angler wants the IGFA to certify their "world record," the line they use must conform to IGFA line class requirements. However, not all manufacturers follow this standard.

@@varivas1482 Yes, Understood with the IGFA - but it's not helping consumers when the bulk of us are not hunting for records and the companies themselves have their own standard individually.

I usually look at both pound test and the diameter in mm, and take into account that the braid will usually break higher than the number on the label and that's always worked for me.

In your opinion, what would be the recommended leader length for shore light jigging? Thanks!

This is a very subjective question and differs from person to person. In reality the length should change depending on where you are fishing - people tend to get lazy with this and stick to what they believe in - shorter leaders are required if fishing in areas with strong currents, especially with thicker leaders. In areas with an abrupt drop and you're not fishing in elevated areas, like on top of rocks, your leader should be longer because you want as much protection from the drop off as possible, same when you are fishing off the beach, a longer leader will help getting abrasion from the sand especially when using lighter line. As far as the length specifically - I fish leaders from 2m to 10m in length, depending on where I fish, what I fish for, tackle used and the fish im after.

Ok so just my 2 cents but what I am given to understand is that the PE system is handed down from the silk lines thickness which were used long ago for fishing...so its more of a traditional indication of line thickness which is why the test poundage is more of an afterthought and sort of make it easier for the western world to understand what the line is capable of now that fishing has gone global....

what dictates how much line you can put on the reel? is how how much it can hold before breaking or the diameter?

What makes the PE rating even more confusing is that there isn't one single diameter-to=PE# standard for all manufacturers to follow in Japan. Sometimes even the same manufacturer has two different standards in producing two different products. For example, the Dangan line you showed in the video, which is made by MajorCraft I believe, is PE#0.3 and 0.06mm in diameter. But in Australia, where I live, you can buy a spool of Dangan X8 braid in PE#0.6, but in the same diameter of 0.06mm. So is 0.06mm = PE#0.3 or 0.6? Like you said, there is simply no standard when it comes to making fishing line. It's all up to the manufacturer to decide which product has which rating. It's truly a free world to them. 😂

It is the case unfortunately. It is worth noting that brands also change manufacturers from time to time - Most brands don't not have their own factory - and when they switch from one manufacturer to another, there might also be changes in diameters to mitigate costs or earn more - since thinner braids are more time consuming to produce and therefore, more expensive.

@@TheFishingKit That's true. And sometimes I also suspect that at least some manufacturers deliberately write down the diameter number to show the product's "superiority" over others'. Sometimes when I compare two braids of the same PE or diameter rating, I can easily tell one is thicker than the other. Boy, they are definitely not making things easier for anglers, are they? It would be so much more convenient if they can at least stick to the same PE to diameter equation.

@@hangyu0211 i used to work for a company that has their own factory for my things, line was one of them - even if they can, they didn't really make lines according to Japanese ratings - the closest they have ever done was to make everything according to japanese spec but not the diameters - the reason is quite straightforward - they concentrated on is the biggest market in the world - and their specs went towards the specs this market likes. They still sold worldwide, but the biggest market is where the money is at and until that market has the preference changed to Japanese standards, it will always be the way it is.

@@hangyu0211 I perfectly understand them though, imagine if they followed Japanese specs and they lose their sales...they are known to make "strong" lines. but all it really is - is making thicker braid and selling them under rated.

The ONLY system that does make sense is European (metric). Diameter in mm, which tells you how line will cast, sink, catch wind, fill the spool + breaking strength in kg, which as rule increases with price/quality.

Metric is what wa chosen so except for the US it makes sense. If it was another system, I am sure it would make more sense than metric. End of the day, it's what the world uses. The Japanese use Guo which are the #numbers. (PE2 etc) they translate to metric easy because it is a standard. so PE 2 is 0.235mm. instead of the american's simplificcation saying PE 2 is 20lb, which is stupid...coz its not 20lb.

Some thoughts while watching... PE is not a standard. It simply means it is a polyester line, braid. The standard you're talking about is set by JAFS, and it's the Go number. This system is as flawed as lb test. The Go number simply means the line falls into an average diameter. It does not signify a line breaking strain. You can have wide variance in lime strength but they all share the same diameter. A better system would incorporate 2 key line properties, diameter amd breaking strain. This could be done many ways.

Rainbo, Thanks for the comment. Actually, PE is not Polyester, it is Polyethylene. PE is measured in Goh, just as almost any piece of string material is measured in a lot of places in asia. This is a standard. It's been a standard since silk was wound on a spool, this measurement is ancient - it could be flawed. However, your reel's capacity is affected not by pound test, but by the diameter. Your casting distance, the line's ability to cut through air on the cast and water on a drift, how deep your lure dives when you troll/cast - all affected by DIAMETER. Not poundage.

Hi buddy, I like the PE way it makes more sense , because it easyer to fit with the rod, maybe the Amican lb thing is a 4 strand , 8 stand thing .I do not see the PE number on 4 strand here in Europe. Thanks brother 😁👍

4/8 are called "carriers" in the industry, so 4 carrier braid is what we commonly call 4 strands etc.

You didnt broach the subject of choosing what leader to use on PE. The lb system makes sense with this since breaking strength is of importance not diameter, hence that system is useful since its used on mono and flouro as well. Diameter is important in regards to anything where the spool is involved but not so much when it comes to leader selection

Joe, the leader is important, but is not really directly related to how it affects the drag - I can technically use 4lb line with a 400lb leader and the leader... will this affect the way I set my drag?

@@TheFishingKit ...More often then not your leader should test less then your braid main, ie: 30lb braid with 20lb leader, and in that case, yes, it is 100% what determines how you set your drag.

So which means you use a lighter leader than your mainline? I get that the braid is thinner than 20lb mono, but you arent also taking advantage of the 20lb, you are taking advantage of the Diameter of the leader for abrasion resistance, which means if you can find 400lb strength mono with a diamter of 20 lb it is fair game. So diameter not strength, other wise it wont make sense having a leader thats weaker than you main.

@@TheFishingKit ...are you being serious? Yes, of course the leader is of less strength than the main braid In the US. Except for shark rigs with a steel bite leader, that is how it is done 99.9% of the time, in freshwater, saltwater, inshore, offshore, yes, leader lighter than main is the standard.

The reason that American braids still use breaking strain is that they are crap. And since there is no legal standard for comparison, it's considered fair game, although to me it sounds just like false advertisement. If they went with true PE (Gou) numbers and real breaking strains they would go out of business soon.

PE makes sense coz it will give you exactly how much line your reel can take - poundage does not.

@@TheFishingKit Another inconsistency that I found is between stated PE number and stated diameter in mm, for cheaper Japanese braids like J-braid and Kairiki. I have found the stated PE number to be closer to the truth, whereas the stated diameter in mm is way too low.

@@nik-lc3ob The only standard that can be trusted is the Gou number itself and not any other type of measurement. everything else given is actually an average not the actual diameter because like mono, there are parts that are thicker and parts that are thinner.
