My indoor Peace Lily turned 49 years old in 2024, purchased in 1975, longer than most marriages. It's lived through the dry heat of Southern California, the moderate climate of Northern California and the damp rainy cold winters of the Northwest. It once grew to a height of 2 1/2 feet, sprouting separate trunks from which leaves and berries grew. It couldn't support this weight at that height, so I propped it up with sticks, eventually needing to prune it back and shorten it. It has bloomed the white leaf lily stems many times, but we didn't touch its occasional small hard round red berries, since they might be toxic to humans. It went into shock during long distance moves, riding in its pot on the floor of my car. The changes into new climates and surroundings took 6-8 months for it to eventually recover. It's been re-potted into new larger pots many times, with new potting soil and drainage gravel at the pot's bottom, under which sits a large water collection saucer. It gets occasional fertilizer, and occasional water, especially when it starts to droop. It sits near the window, getting moderate light, and I open the blinds every morning just for it on overcast days, not on direct sunlight days. Over the years, this plant's condition often reflected the same conditions in my own life. It is the only pet or plant in the house, and because it has been there through so many years of life's ups and downs, it has become a member of the family. Who would think that a simple house plant, with a normal lifespan of 3-5 years would live with you for nearly five decades? The question now, is whether or not it will outlive me?
These plants love coffee grounds big time. Once a year mix grounds into soil surface. It's depends on the size of the pot as to how much don't over do it.
Besides spraying distilled water on mine from time to time, I also make it a habit to spray distilled water on a sponge and wipe its leaves so that there are no water spots.
Here for information about repotting because I am about to help my mom repot 2 massive peace lilies that have been in the same soil for 25+ years. No idea how they regularly flowers with no fertilizer, near our front door and air vent! So true how quickly these guys perk up! I remember a number of times during my teens when I would forget to water our lilies while my parents were away and they would always perk up just in time
Thank you that was very helpful. I have a new peace lily baby and didn’t know why the leaves were blackening. It was too close to the window! Great video and very informative.
I acquire a big one less than a year ago and is keeping all the leaves very healthy. However I think it’s time to propagate it. Thanks for the tips. 👏🏼👏🏼
I was just talking about my peace lily troubles today, then this video came up! It was super helpful. Thank you!! I think I realized mine just needs a bigger home 💁🏼♀️ you’re awesome!!
@@HarliG so glad you're doing this! I got an arrowhead plant for my anniversary and I thought you'd have a video about them since I've heard you say they're your favorite, but nope!
Hi Harli, I'm usually blessed with plants but my Peace Lily is having trouble. Listening I received good points & I'm praying this will be the case. I'm going to move it where I've got other plants to keep it warm. The kitchen for the winter. Already the leaves turned yellow & brown. I've listened to what you said about that. It seems all my plants do well in the winter in the kitchen. Makes it difficult when you live in apartment & can't help because of this. Praying that this will work. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I have a very healthy Peace Lily but think I need to let the water site overnight as suggested as the very tips of the leaves are brown. This has helped other plants with this issue.
I bought a peace lily 5 months ago.All the blooms that were there in the beginning eventually died and I saw this video in when I had first bought it and I got sad when you said it doesn’t bloom but it keeps blooming .It is very dense now with leaves compared to the beginning and the roots has started to grow out of the holes but I can’t buy a new pot because all shops are closed due to quarantine😅
i read somewhere online that if the peace lily is rootbound it stresses the plant a little, which forces it to work more so thats how you can get flowers to produce. my peace lily is pretty rootbound and has 9 flowers... 2 more coming on the way!
I need some advice. My peace lily is massive (about 3 feet tall and about 3.5 feet wide). Very, very full and leafy plant. It was about 3/4s of its current size when I bought it in late August 2019. I love this plant because it's big and beautiful but also tells me when it's thirsty so I don't kill it. It's a great first houseplant. I thought my peace lily would never bloom again, but I noticed a few weeks ago that there are 2 new lilies coming out. TWO! One has almost completely unraveled. Super stoked! But I'm not sure what I'm doing incorrectly because I cannot seem to get rid of the brown tips. I think my apartment is just very dry and it may need more humidity. I have seen so many videos about overwatering, under watering, drafts, et cetera causing brown tips. I've been misting it at least once per week. Her spot is about 12 feet away from a huge, south-facing window so she gets plenty of indirect light. It's been months and I cannot figure out what she wants from me. I don't think I'm overwatering or under watering it, so I'm not sure what the problem is or how to fix it. I've seen some videos saying you can just cut the tips off on an angle and that can solve the problem if it's getting enough humidity and water. But I've tried to do that in the past and the brown tips returned. If anyone has any tips, I would really appreciate it. :)
Hi. Love your energy in all the videos!!So i have this peace lily for over a month now. I had been watering it whenever the soil felt dry i.e every 6th day or so. Recently it started to droop within 4 days of watering and the soil was dry. So assuming its hot (we live in SoCal) id water it and it would pump up straight! Also some of the baby leaves have been going yellow. I can now see a few roots growing up to the surface though the plant has still not grown that big. Should i repot it?
@Harli G can you do an updated video on your peace lilies please? In other videos I know you have mentioned that you now bottom water them. Also do you clean your peace lily leaves, if so how?
If i keep my peace lily in the bathroom instead of my bedroom, would it be better as the moisture levels are higher in the bathroom? Cz there is quite a lot of wind that blows through my house so its quite dry..
Hey Harli! Cool video you are fun to watch. I notice you have acne, I know it is caused by various reasons but I got rid of mine by using celery stalk! Now I am not as prone to get as before. It tastes a little bad at first but hey for glowing skin it's worth it.
My peace lily is not only drooping with brown leaves but all the flowers are dying. Should I cut the flowers back/off? I think it’s time to repot it- took it home from my mom’s funeral 2 months ago- it’s a HUGE plant and I don’t have a good window to keep it by. Any suggestions on that? Thx
I got mine for $4 from my local nursery. I’m keeping it in my bathroom bc I’m afraid of the cats eating them and I feel like it cleans my bathroom well because I read they do well in humid small spaces
I transplanted my peace lily 5 days ago and it still seems to be in shock... super droopy all over! and a couple yellow leaves... any tips for helping this? thanks!
I've potted my peace Lilly outside and I keep it under fair amount of shade and it was doing really well in the hot summers but now that we are in the middle of rainy season, suddenly the leaves of my plant are getting holes in them, like something is eating the leaves from the middle and from sides too. I moved it to a place where it can get more light but nothing really changed. I am not watering it too much but still the soil remains quite moist for too long. The plant is not drooping or anything but it's just getting eaten away, am not really sure what's causing this. Any thoughts?
this is my first time being a plant mom , i have a peace lilly plant that i named after my son josiah due to him passing as a newborn feb 1 of this year , but the plant was donated to me from my mom work and i have no clue on raising plants but im putting my all into it for my particular reason , since i’ve got the plant it seems like the leaves been dying off and it looks like it’s getting thin , i don’t have it sitting directly in front of the window and i do keep the soil moist , i just dont know what to do and i really want to take care of it because its all i have left of my baby , so im putting my energy into it , any suggestions ?
Hey I need serious help...😫 I have no clue what is wrong with my peace lily, she is not happy with me at all. White flowers are browning and serious drooping.
hi. i have a picasso peace lily that arrived in after 8 days in transit. it was bare-rooted with some root rot. i trimmed off the rot and soaked them with hydrogen peroxide water overnight and it was looking great. the next day, i planted it on a mixture of coconut husk+coir+perlite. when i came home from work, all the leaves are wilting.. can you help me rescue my plant? hope to hear from you.
Question about peace lily. I’ve had mine years and I swear it’s never been healthy. I hardly water it, every nursery I talk to says I over water. The leaves start to turn black at the tips and continues farther down the leaf until I have to cut the whole leaf off. I’m down to 3 leaves this winter has been so bad. I had it 10 feet from a window facing north, just moved it into a warmer room on the floor for now with a south facing window. Thoughts or advice? Thanks. Oh also. I just watered it. Water ran right through but when I dig down a bit the soil more than half an inch down was boooone dry. Should I repot?
Sounds like the soil has become water resistant. That sometimes happens. Try watering from the bottom. I fill the tray and let the water wick up into the pot. If there's any water standing in the tray after a few hours, empty it - they hate wet feet!
I have a peace lily in work, it was left for 6 months of lockdown in direct sun and burnt to a crisp. I started watering it when I came back and it’s now regrowing and flowering 😁
@@sylviamoore5314 I can’t say I’ve ever had issues. Gnats will be attracted to the soil in general, not particularly the plant so if you’re going to get them, you’ll get them regardless of the plant type.
Really? But how do I get the peel in the pot when the stems are covering the top soil? Cut it into pieces or something like crushing in a blender? Suggest something.
Mine is from my mother's funeral. 4years ago. I too feel the need to keep the plant alive. and I'm not even a plant person. Lol But thank you all for all the great tips. Not sure I want to try the banana peel one though. I'm thinking it may cause bugs. I was on here for advice for repotting to a bigger pot.
I was taking care of my friends peace lilly for 2 weeks and it bloomed for the first time since a long time, now it has 5 white flowers and because it happened when I took care of it my friend gave it to me, now it's in my room I hope she likes it 😍
I've had mine for at least 5 years. Super dramatic, if I even look at it in the wrong way it has a hissy fit. Anyway, after many dramas it finally flowered last year and had about 6 flowers! Nothing tests your plant Mum ability more than these :)
I recently rescued a peace lily from ending up in the dumpster..a guy said it was dead, it's not dead it was just in sopping wet soil..it was being drowned, so I brought it home n separated and ended up with 5 plants instead of one..the three of the five I repotted..are druppy..but looks happier
I had to go on vacation for 3 weeks and that is definitely a no-no for a peace lily in terms of watering - my solution? I made a self-watering system like I have for my African Violets :-) Basically I pull a length of synthetic string through the soil and let that hang in a pot of water. Then the plant can soak up the amount of water it needs. It has worked so well for my peace lily, that is survived the 3 weeks and it has never drooped again since I got home :-)
my peace lily "flowers" ALL the time, its actually rare that it doesnt have any. i've had it for over 4 years now and its HUGE! :) one of my most rewarding plants
@@lilyrose8900 bright indirect sun, keep it moist... its really an easy plant so i dont have many tips cuz its just kind of a set it and forget it but water it weekly ish and it just does its thing
Peace lilies are tropical evergreen plants that thrive on the forest floor where they receive dappled sunlight and consistent moisture. Replicating these conditions in the home is the key to getting your peace lily to be happy and healthy .. thank you harly for this great video and you look so amazing at this video ⚘🌿🍁
Oh my god.. I literally just bought my first peace lily today and I was thinking “I need to look at care for it on RU-vid” and this came up in my recommended
In relation to the plant hormone thing, if you’re patient and wait a few years they will flower again. My first peace lily didn’t flower for a good 2-3 years but then flowered every year after. It wasn’t as many as you see in the shops but it was so worth seeing a happy plant!
Quoting from a Reddit thread: "The NASA studies on indoor pollution done in 1989 recommends 15 to 18 plants in 6 to 8-inch- diameter containers to clean the air in an average 1,800 square foot house. That's roughly one plant per 100 square feet of floor space."
This is entirely false. This study is constantly misrepresented. Honestly, it's disgusting how badly this misinformation has been spread. Both the video and your comment are one of thousands of examples. This is a published study, I encourage you both to go read it for yourselves- it doesn't take that long, I promise... "Don't take my word for it." Don't take youtube or reddits words for it either. The study is fundamentally different than growing house plants in dirt. The study uses inorganic CARBON media [a filtering mineral!!!], suspended over a literal electric fan- which then circulates air over the carbon. The study showed that under these extremely specific non-real-world scenarios, that certain chemicals were reduced over time. And in fact, the amount of chemicals it reduced was so incredibly small and under such a small volume of air, that your entire living space would have to be completely filled with plants- literally every square foot- to have any remote measurable effects *in the real world*. You simply cannot take a highly controlled experiment and blanket apply it to the real world. It doesn't work like that... and that's not what the study concluded. Literally opening a window for 30 seconds filters your air exponentially more than a peace lily.
Loved the the Peace Lily time lapse! Great info...had no idea nurseries used a hormone that helps the plants to flower. Wish they made it available to the public. Ironically I had just bought a Peace Lily and was planning on re-potting it today. Thanks :)
Every time we move, the first plant I get is a Peace Lily. To me it's the easiest. And mine always flowers every year in the summer. I do fertilize mine with tea leaves-after I drink I cup I just let the bag dry up and then toss it on the pot. This is what I do to fertilize all my plants and Fish Emulsion mixed in the water during Summer.
@MeadhbhNi a natural fix for the mold is cinnamon on tops of soil. I have this problem when I order plants in the winter and they come soaking wet in my cold room they get sapphyridic fungus, w/e its called. and the cinnamon is also good for root health.
Hey harli! I’ve had a peace lily for a few months and I’ve had trouble finding the correct lighting for it. Even in super low light it’s leaves are turning brown. Do you have any advice
Hey Harli, good tips! I think you've made a positive vote for acquiring a peace lily! One can find them at big box stores usually and they are put on clearance quite frequently. GOOD TIP to give them water without chemicals. Peace lilies love summer rain, so if you can, take your peace lily out when it rains so that they can be watered and their leaves will be washed. I water mine with fish tank water, too!
Love your videos I just bought a peace lily I'm a new plant mama learning so much I watered my lily for the first time and t he next day she had about five yellow leaves Please help what did I do wrong and what can I do to prevent this from happening again. I did water her when leaves were dropping and soil was dry. Thanks
Was she flopping over when you decided to water her? It could be chemicals in the water or not enough aeration in the soil. Or she was too wet for too long! Sorry I'm unsure of which it is...
My peace lily went absolutely bananas this summer and almost doubled in size over 3 months. Looking forward to seeing what it does this year; it’s already massive!
I have apeace lily in the off, and i found i had to repot it. i seperated the part the was limpand turning yellow .do you thik it will continue growing once it's repoted?
Omg I’m in tears because my Moses I named him I over watered and it’s been sad for three days.. I sat it outside to dry out on day four and thank God he’s now bouncing back- I love plantS
Oof I'm a little late but it depends how much or if they even put any chemicals in your tap water, so it depends really where you live and how the tap water is.
Can you make a care video for goldfish plants? I got some weird variety from amazon and idk what it is but it’s more succulent and woody than the one my mom used to have and mine has yet to flower for me. I have propagated it and both the mother and baby plants have been growing for me but it definitely has some specific needs
Nahrin Zannat I don’t know for sure, I’ve never had a peace lily. If I had to guess I’d say that it needs more water and/or humidity since leaf tips will be the first to dry and turn brown/black when that’s the case
Was going to upload a pic but I guess I can't. You can actually keep peace lilies roots wet 24/7 and the do fine. I think what people call over watering is actually just having to much water in the soil. In a aquaponics set up the water free flows. Water in a pot with soil there is no flow so it stagnates. So it's probably not as much the plant can't handle a lot of water I think if you grow them in a pot and add to much water you grow things in the soil or create some sort of stagnant water the plant just can't handle.
I've had tremendous luck with my peace lilies by adding to their pots some of my worm castings (I've done worm composting for many years!). In fact, I've never had healthier looking houseplants than since I started doing this. The worm castings gives me much better results than any other organic fertilizer I've used. I also get a few white "flowers" which are called brachts (I had to look it up!), and you're more likely to get them in high vs. low light situations. I've never attempted to propagate them, and will try to the next time I repot them. And you are right about them preferring airy soil, and watering no more often than once/week. And yes, I know they need to be watered if I notice any leaves start to droop. BTW, I just discovered your videos and find your way of presenting information endearing, entertaining, and informative. I adopted a couple peace lily varieties from someone who worked in a windowless office. They were root bound, sun starved, and sitting in water inside pots with no drainage. I thought for sure there was no way I could turn them around and save them but both are thriving! They really are super hearty plants. One of them is so happy it put out three 'flowers' this summer and I have a question about them: They've turned from white to green and blend in with the rest of the foliage... should I prune off those flowers after they are no longer white?
Wow! That's impressive! Good work (: If you want to cut the flowers you totally can once they are green. In the past I have just waited until it begins to brown to give them the snip!
I think these plants are gifted to someone when they're going through a loss. Don't make the same mistake I did. Apparently they're reserved for funerals.
My first house plant was my peace lily and she is still alive and thriving after a year of abuse 😂 overwatering, direct sunlight, air conditioner abuse...shes finally found her happy place 😛
Hi, I have a question my mom owns a peace lily, recently the leaves started to become brown/black and wilted. The whole plant basically turn that way. You said it has to do with the sun. We usually had the plant placed in the bathroom window not alot of sun but it was growing just fine until she moved the plant to a more sun expose area. What should we do then when the whole plant is in this situation. If we cut/trim everything will it regrow itself or is there a better solution. My mom did divided them into 3 pots and trim the all the dead leaves and stem. The root is very healthy as well just the leaves that's turning black/brown
Rock on Plant Mama! You killed it in this video. 👍 Peace Lilies are like Diffenbachia in that they're "easy plants" but they can be tricky and get really mad at you if you get a couple of things wrong! You saved some plant lives with this video.
