The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

PEARL BAILEY always the entertainer and impeccably dressed!

There's something in Pearl Bailey's patter with Ed Sullivan that strikes me as contemporary. Her biographical profile shows an accomplished, well-rounded talent and person, a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient in 1988. This clip is a nice reminder of a great American.

Pearl is superbly costumed and her take on the pop scene is hilarious. I love the moment she pretends to be cleaning her house. And she is in fantastic voice. As Playbyplaymedia below indicates, Pearl Baily was a national treasure and clips like allow me to say, she IS a national treasure. Timeless!

Sweet. (That was really cute at 2:28 how she imitated the hit single version of the song. I wonder if that was improvised. Very creative.)

I read in a comment on another video on this channel that the Ed Sullivan Show didn't allow the same song to be performed by different artists in a period of time, something like 6 months to a year, But the New Vaudeville Band performed it about 3 or 4 months before this show.

Yes, I don't think that was true. My instinct tells me the same songs were sometimes performed quite a few times on the show in a shorter period of time. Connie Francis also sang "Winchester Cathedral" on the show in June 1967.

Pearl made fun of "Winchester Cathedral" like Sinatra poked fun at "Downtown." They knew the material was substandard, but what the heck, that's what the public wanted. In both cases, the results were very enjoyable.

You mean they THOUGHT the material was substandard. Not sure about Winchester Cathedral, but it's hard to see Downtown as inferior at all. It's one of the sixties' most iconic pop songs.

@@havingagr8time If you ever heard Frank's version of "Downtown," you'd sense his opinion of it, and he should know. I've always gone my own way about music, films, books, television. I've never needed reviews or or popularity statistics to inform me what's good, bad, or mediocre. I'm a senior now, and certainly won't start caring now.

I've been requesting the version by Connie Francis for this for months 😒 Disappointing. Connie is the song for Disney's Cruella movie so it's smart to post her videos since she's in a spotlight.

This was a parody of the tune... a humorous send-up of the stark dichotomy between the 'outgoing' era of very lyrical, poetic 'Standards,' and the new hyper-personal 'Singer/Songwriter' aesthetic.
