@@iceoriental123 Tbh, USSR would have collapsed if not for racism in Germany. Many, many, many did not like the Communists (especially the Ukrainians) and Stalin. The correct approach to the occupied territories could save Germany from collapse on the eastern front.

Germany captured a huge piece of russia and took millions of pows in a few months and 22 million soviets will be dead by the end of the war. To be honest if stalin wouldent be the leader of the soviet union, I think there would be a Chance that they would have surrendered.

Pyroranger It’s actually ironic, because the Midway operation was created to deal with that problem; the idea being that they would lure out the US carriers by taking Midway. Except US Intelligence was better than Japanese Intelligence and the US carriers ended up being the ones ambushing the Japanese carriers.

They also sunk like 90% of that carrier fleet over the next couple of months so it wasn't really that big of a frustration.

The main difference between the two were: Russia was primarily a land-based power, and had its navy spread out across 4 seas, while the US was primarily a sea-based power, and had its navy in 2 seas which were easily accessible to one another. I don't see how the Japanese didn't realize this. Maybe they did, and just did it anyways.

The Russian pacific fleet was relatively small, and the baltic fleet and balkan (is that the name for the one in southern europe near Ukraine) are aproximately 258 light years away from the pacific. I doubt that that the Japanese failed to see that.

Caliber your right, the Japanese government gave funds to some animation studios in order to produce War propaganda. Which lead to the first full length anime feature film which was a propaganda film. All of this and an economic boom later on led to anime being more mainstream in Japan or you can make a bomb joke either one works.

Anime is more of a continuation of Japan's already existent manga traditions combined with animation principles from the West.

Japan went all out early, inflicted a string of demoralizing defeats on the Russians, who probably could have turned things around if their leadership hadn't lost the stomach for the fight. And the for the last half decade their experience with the Western Powers had largely been that they talk a lot but care very little what about happens in Asia. Americas stubborn refusal to get involved in the war in Europe also can be interpreted as an unwillingness to fight a prolonged war. When you look at it from a purely japanese lens you can see how they'd have convinced themselves it was doable. Demoralize the Americans, seize the strategic (proverbial) high ground, force them to choose between a long and bloody war or simply agree to leave Japan to it's own devices in an area of the world America, at the time, had limited interest in anyway. Considering the other option was to basically surrender all their recent conquests and retreat back to the unfortunately resource poor home islands, leaving them vulnerable to Western Powers in the future (which is how the japanese high command saw it, rightly or wrongly)... eh, still not a great choice, but you can see a certain logic to it

The U.S. had not entered the war in Europe, yet. So, there is a reluctance to fight a prolonged war? However, the U.S. had sent over a million troops to France in WW1. The U.S. when incentives were there, we were perfectly willing and able to fight a very deadly war. What better incentive than a sneak attack? Also, the U.S. is a Republic with democratic rules. We do not have a Monarch, Tsar, or Emperor, nor any one person who decides to go to war or end a war, unlike Russia or Japan. Their thinking is the same as a bully. If I cower one person, then I can cower every person. Eventually the bully learns the error of his thinking. The Tsar ended the Russo-Japanese war, one man. The Japanese Emperor ended WW2, one man. Name one man in the U.S. who could have ended the war with Japan with a treaty. Even the most ardent isolationist and America First proponent, Lindberg, joined the military after Pearl Harbor. An Armistice with Japan after Pearl Harbor would have been political suicide and would never passed Congress. Then there is the two Vinson Naval Acts, of 1934 and 1938. Years before Pearl Harbor. These Acts show that the U.S. was gearing up for potential war, and in a very large way. The U.S.S. Enterprise was laid down in 1934 under this Act. With many more being built, planned and funded already, including the first 3 Iowa class battleships. If the Japanese KNEW anything, they knew they could not stop or even slow this production. There is as much conflicting historical fact opposing this thinking as there is supporting this supposed Japanese thinking. If history has proven anything about WW2, it has proven the fallacy of Japanese and German thinking about land and resources. Look at both today, two of the top economies in the world, with no more resources and territory than prior to WW2, yet very successful. It seems purchasing your requirements in a peaceful free market is much more beneficial than trying to steal them through war.

I've read a lot of comments that claim the US was actively goading Japan into fighting them with sanctions, provocative actions, political responses, and the like. As you've said, this is complete nonsense and the Japanese definitely could've avoided the whole mess entirely had they just stopped fighting and chose to negotiate. But yeah, tons of people believe this for god knows why..

Japan and the US actually had somewhat good relations for a while, Japan was one of the few countries that the US actually talked to and didn’t ban immigrants from when they wanted to ban immigration from Asia. Keep in mind it was usually an uneasy alliance, Japan didn’t like getting pushed around and the US did that to Japan a few times, but both never really thought about war with each other until WW II

People forget that there were two broad factions of Japan up until the 1930s: the 'Old Men' (many of whom built modern Japan) and the Imperialists (the chuckleheads that we know and love today). The Old Men's broad plan was... basically turning Japan into an Asian Venice, a trade empire with bases to ensure its trade routes, and it must be noted that they didn't want to take Korea as a colony. The Imperialists wanted to Japan to be in the Big Nations Club and used Britain and France as a basis... and were the ones that bypassed the Old Men and got Korea made into a colony.

USS Anime DD24 The ones of note are Midway and nearly the entire Guadalcanal Campaign. After the Essex-Class came out Enterprise was no longer the dominant US capital ship, though she still participated in all the major battles.

USS Anime DD24 And they saved the Iowas which were unnecessary in WWII....(you don’t need 16” guns for anti-air escort so why even build a battleship for that role?) and didn’t do anything noteworthy enough for them to deserve preservation. Skewed priorities much? As much as I think of the Iowas as the best-designed battleships ever, they’re still overrated in terms of actual performance. To the extent that people seriously think they have any sensible use today. Being the crowning example of a concept that had already been made obsolete isn’t really impressive, IMO.

The Punic wars may have had some fairly large naval battles for antiquity, but they don't really have the same scale. Nor did the naval component of these wars dominate the entire theater to the extent seen in the Pacific.

@@rogercoulombe3613 Of course people back in antiquity didn't have the ability to wage battles from World War Two in terms of area, the largest naval battle (in terms of number of ships) was Cape Ecnomus which housed nearly 680 ships all fighting at once.

Well, between Japan and its carriers and Germany and its submarines, they independently developed the two new aspects of naval warfare that would play critical roles in WWII and beyond. Which they blew because they had worse intelligence, industrial capacity, and (with carriers) pilot training doctrine than the Allies. (Ironically, considering is ally Germany was the mother of modern submarine warfare, Japanese submarine and ASW was horrific. People like to rip on bad Japanese AA because it’s subpar compared to the US, but at least the IJN saw that as a problem, and it’s bad mostly when compared against US AA doctrine and technology which was far better than that of the other Allies; but with the submarines they never even bothered to try)

Emil the reason I think the Allies took so long wasn’t that the axis were really that good, it was just the British and French made some big opsies thinking that ww2 would be like ww1, and the Soviets in 1941 were really just unprepared for such an attack and their equipment was really outdated. Overall, the axis just did average against a bad opponent until the bad opponent became a good opponent and then the axis fell apart.
