Neil is so fuckin gnarly I don’t think we appreciate how much he inspired and helped create all the music we grew up loving from Pearl Jam to nirvana to oasis and all that good music from the 90s
I remember watching this live and knew back then that this was going to be a legendary performance. One of my top 10 of the best-ever rock performances.
I was raised by my grandad, who is the biggest rock/metal head of all time. He's 76 now and still kicking it hard as hell. He brought me up on tonnes of Dylan, Young, Thin Lizzy, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Maiden, Priest etc. You name it, he was into it. I'd always known and loved the Neil Young version of this track as I'd heard my grandad blasting it hard since I was a baby. But, one random day when I was bumming around on The Pirate Bay in the mid 00's, I found this live show. My grandad was never really into grunge, but that was 100% my jam. Terrible pun intended. Listening to this song in particular just absolutely blew my mind. I remember picking up my guitar, playing along to this and headbanging like a motherf$%cker soooo many times in a row. I showed it to my grandad expecting him to be kinda "that's cool, but meh" about it. Instead, he was like "man, this is incredible, who's the dude on vocals?? You can play this song, right!? Go and get your guitar!" We turned this up to 11 and went absolutely ham together listening to a few different tunes back-to-back in the living room of his house. Incredible experience. All of my worlds collided into one in that moment and I'll never forget it.
This performance was the first time I heard pearl jam, the next day I went out and bought ten I’ve never had another album to this day where I loved and listened to every song one after the other seen them 3 times still love em.
DNC 2024 brought me here Can't believe... I never heard this song before, but it feels as if I have always heard it before... but even if I heared it, I might be 10yrs old or less.. Great Song!!!🙏
Neil Young was "Grunge" decades before this style of music became popular in the 90s. His style paved the way for many of the Seattle bands at the time. Only more fitting to him on MTV at the time.
I remember watching this video back at early 90s. Every sunday, after church,me and my family used to go to my grandparents' house for lunch. This very sunday,my grandmom was cooking, and the Italian Championship match was late,so my grandpa went to his room,so i turned on MTV. I was an early adolescent, but i still remember,by now,how powerful watching it was.
What is amazing about this is: PJ wasn't sure Neil was going to show. PJ rehearsed "Old Man" not knowing what Neil wanted to play since Neil never showed for the rehearsal. Offstage, Neil told the roadie "just dime everything" on the Marshall stack he plugged in to. You can hear the vacuum tubes getting overloaded before he started.... When Neil started grinding the riff, Eddie panicked slightly, the bassist missed first note or two, but the drummer pounced. It was awsome! I'm deployed in Middle East right now and I miss this stuff....
One of the greatest live performances ever. Actual rock ' n roll and what an anthem now that the free world is being threatened by the next US government
I was 9 years old, I remember being stuck in front of tv and absolutely captivated. I had no idea live music could be this great outside of Guns N’ Roses. I’ve been a diehard fan since 😎😎😎
This performance brings back a certain memory for me. Me and a friend were at this girl's house we had all dropped acid we were rocking out to this while it was being broadcasted for the first time and her dad came home in the middle of it we had all the lights off with glow sticks in our hands dancing only the TV was on. Lol She turns the volume down and her dad just calmly says "Can I talk to you in the other room please" 😅😅😅
Looking at this awesomeness, I'm trying to remember the exact year I watched Neil in concert with Pearl Jam as his backing band (without the singer). 1994 or perhaps 95?
this is probably one of my top 3 favorite performances from the VMA's, the other two being the acoustic set with Jon Bon Jovi/Ritchie Sambora from 1989 and the 1986 performance of the Monkees doing Daydream Believer/I"m a Believer. Back when the VMA's were actually fun to watch
This, ladies and gentlemen, is rock n' roll in its purest, rawest form. It literally does not get any better than this. Keep on rockin' in the free world, everybody 🤟🎸
No this is how they played it. It's just that Pearl Jam plays it much faster than this when they play it live today, and also even Neil plays the studio version faster.
tbh he looked kinda lost there at times behind his hair curtain, hugging himself while everyone around him went apeshot. This is my only impression of him at that age, later concerts show him much more relaxed
Weird how this video makes Neil look so much bigger than Eddie. Neil put a lot into the performance. I say this as a guy that will definitely vote for Donald Trump: left wingers make some of the best music on this planet.
