Don’t think anyone in Pearl Jam has come out and said it but the overall feeling among fans is that this song is about the bands friend Chris Cornell. It’s a beautiful song.

Whether or not this was written for or about Chris Cornell, it’s impossible for me to listen to this song and not think of him.

Love this reaction!! This is my fave song off Gigaton and that it’s widely believed to be about Chris Cornell just makes my heart ache more with every listen. The line that hits me deeply is “the queen of Collections took your time, sadness comes ‘cause some of it was mine” it’s the most profoundly heartbreaking lyric about loss I’ve ever heard.
@lukelarsson
@lukelarsson 3 года назад
The Gigaton Produce Josh Evans(who started with PJ in the mid 2000’s assisting and getting sandwiches for the band) talking about Comes Then Goes. “Comes Then Goes” This song is just Ed’s guitar and vocal, which is either the first or second take. We recorded it on a day a couple years ago when we were about to get snowed in at the studio. We didn’t necessarily think it would go on the record that way. His performances are so perfect and so intense and so emotional that I don’t think there was ever a question afterwards that this was the song. Different people tried different things, but anytime we added something, it didn’t actually add something. The rest of the band realized their part for this song was to not play. Why mess with it? There’s a great Thelonious Monk quote: don’t put all the music in the song. Let some of it happen in the audience’s mind. In the flow of the record up to this point, you’ve had all these tempos and sounds. This gives you a break. Sonically, it’s simple, but emotionally, it is very complex.

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Eddie Vedder on guitar and vocals (and lyrics) talking to Chris, releasing a couple of years of loss denial. Don’t try to comment the lyrics. They mean something different for each listener, but you can definitely be aware of the beauty of a phrase or paragraph. And poetry is math too, pal!

David, thanks for breaking down the vocal notation choices there. I didn't have the musical theory to articulate it, so it's great to hear you do the analysis. So cool that you loved this song and that you were so struck by the lyrics. I completely agree that it's a beautiful and special song... It might be the best song on their new album. Lyrically outstanding, among other things. Shows that Eddie can still pull magic out of his hat. I'm told the song is about Chris Cornell, which takes it all to another level. "High or low, where'd you go? Are you stuck in the middle, a spectral invisible ghost, I'm here juxtaposed." A+++

Great review! Your knowledge about music is superb.This song is incredible.Ed on guitar, his voice, that unparalleled voice and those lyrics.I am so happy you check the lyrics because with Pearl Jam(a bit more than with other bands i think) music and lyrics are almost symbiotic.They benefit each other and you experience one through another. Always check lyrics with Pearl Jam songs, not to menton that Ed has been known to be one of the greatest lyricist.

Great track from a great album. Gigaton is amazing. Someone already mentioned this is potentially about Cornell. But if you look deeper it seems to be a few direct jabs at Cornell’s 2nd wife “the queen of collections took your time” the more you look into the lyrics the more I see directed at her. There is ongoing tensions between her and the band. Nice review David.
@CarlosSierralta
@CarlosSierralta 3 года назад
The tensions with Cornell’s wife are a Soundgarden’s survivors. Not PJ or Ed problem. For me, the Queen of Collections is The Death, the Reaper, the shinigami, la Parca. And most of the song is about neglecting feelings, all of us knows that Ed was struglling (and still) with denial. He didn’t go to funeral nor called cornell’s family. It was a huge scandal back in the day
@advantagevarnsen7436
@advantagevarnsen7436 3 года назад
@@CarlosSierralta everyone has there own interpretation of lyrics. So respect your angle with the lyrics it’s another possible interpretation. But there is a clear beef with Ed and her(and her mother) they personally attacked him and Jill. Which I think probably influenced him not going to the funeral. So it is with Ed, Matt ...Pearl jam Lilly and yes sound garden also.
@CarlosSierralta
@CarlosSierralta 3 года назад
@@advantagevarnsen7436 but it is not Ed’s style to argue with his friend’s widow. Not his style, not his way to fix things or to rake up the past
@advantagevarnsen7436
@advantagevarnsen7436 3 года назад
@@CarlosSierralta no it’s not his style and I don’t this he’s arguing with her directly . But I see this as Ed verbalising about Chris’s situation and where it left the relationship between him and Ed and his feelings about both. I think he uses lyrics like this a lot through the years. could be wrong. But that’s how I read it. 👍

No need to apologize for sharing your views. We tune in because we want them. As for your feelings on humanity, there is a lot to be critical of. That said, there are fewer people living in conditions of war than at virtually any point in human history, higher literacy than at any point in history, lower infant mortality rate and higher life expectancy than ever recorded. The negative things we do are also real, and man you aren’t exaggerating about how much we suck sometimes. I just think it’s worth also remembering what we are getting right. This song is actually all Eddie. He is on the acoustic. It’s that right hand of his you keep on complimenting. I’m glad you liked this track. It’s one of my two favorites on Gigaton. Seven O’clock is the other one. Similar powerful message about humanity there, but more explicitly political too. For a song with a similarly interesting acoustic arrangement, I recommend checking out Parting Ways (one of the great PJ break up songs).

Your best sensational reaction yet. It's such a slow creeping surprise of a song that explains the blood rushing to your face with emotion and excitement. They are not perfect, but, sometimes they come close. Lyrically, not your cup of tea, but the magic of PJ is that they always create music for the content and depth of the lyrics or visaversa. About humanity.....let's just say that we've become or evolved into a virus with a pulse capable of creating other viruses and so much more in less than 150 years. Regression is progression and progression is regression.✌

Huge Pearl Jam fan, and just stumbled across this vid. Absolutely love your reaction, and the technical breakdown. You shed light on elements I never would have noted on my own. Eddie Vedder is a poet, and this song, like so many others, is a masterpiece. Not sure how much of their catalog you’ve covered, but may I suggest “Present Tense” if you haven’t covered it yet. P.S. Seeing PJ at the Garden in September with my daughter. Held on to tickets for 2 years. Super psyched. *Update: took a look and noticed you covered MANY of their songs! I’ll be checking out every one of them. Didn’t see “Present Tense” though, so I still highly recommend it! 😉

We are totally the opposite man! Music to me is the greatest form of art.. its about the feel.. its the exact opposite of math.. its abtract! No rules.. but thinking about it, and based on the way i saw it, it moved you as much as well.. And then I realized, the concept of music might be mathematical to you, but in the end, you were moved by it in a profound manner as well.. Somehow the same as a lot of us who view music as shapeless and without form.. Anyway, this song is definitely a 10 to me.. I couldnt believe it the first time I heard it.. Just so beautiful!!
